NICOLE ROCCAS ive in the present! It’s a panacea for stress that resounds from virtually all corners of our culture. Yet anyone who has tried to put this advice into practice finds the Ltask all but impossible. Even if we manage to still the distrac- tions of our minds, the present is inconceivably finite, a point recognized long before modernity. “That which may be called present,” wrote St. Augustine in the late fourth century, “flies so rapidly from future to past, that it cannot be extended” (Confessions, 11.15). Furthermore, neurological research in- dicates our perceptions are a fraction of a second behind the true present, because the brain requires time to process sensory information. As much as we may want to live in the present, it seems we are forever looking back on it. Even in the Church, it is difficult to dwell in the present. It is hard enough to merely notice every feast that goes by, let alone make it a meaningful part of our lives. Thanks be to God, the ecclesiastical calendar accounts for DAYS THAT REMEMBER this reality. Much of the liturgical year happens in the wake of time—the track left behind by the feast days themselves. -

Morning, evening and night they prayed the “divine services” of the Byzantine Church, and this study is the first to examine how these rituals shaped the way they wrote and compiled the Povest’ vremennykh let (Primary Chronicle, ca. 12th century), the earliest surviving East Slavic historical record. My principal argument is that several foundational accounts of East Slavic history—including the tales of the baptism of Princess Ol’ga and her burial, Prince Vladimir’s conversion, the mass baptism of Rus’, and the martyrdom of Princes Boris and Gleb—have their source in the feasts of the liturgical year. The liturgy of the Eastern Church proclaimed a distinctively Byzantine myth of Christian origins: a sacred narrative about the conversion of the Roman Empire, the glorification of the emperor Constantine and empress Helen, and the victory of Christianity over paganism. In the decades following the conversion of Rus’, the chroniclers in Kiev learned these narratives from the church services and patterned their own tales of Christianization after them. The ii result was a myth of Christian origins for Rus’—a myth promulgated even today by the Russian Orthodox Church—that reproduced the myth of Christian origins for the Eastern Roman Empire articulated in the Byzantine rite. -

chapter 2 Orthodox Church Life A. Church Etiquette The Church is the earthly heaven in which the heavenly God dwells and moves. An Orthodox Church is that part of God’s creation which has been set apart and “reclaimed” for the Kingdom of God. Within its walls, the heavenly and earthly realms meet, outside time, in the acts of worship and Sacrifice offered there to God. Angels assist the Priest during the Divine Liturgy, and Saints and members of the Church Triumphant participate in the Ser- vices. The Blessed Theotokos, the Mother of God, is also present and, of course, our Lord Jesus Christ is invisibly present wher- ever two or three gather in His Name, just as He is always present in the reserved Eucharist preserved on the Holy Table of most Orthodox Churches. Given these very significant spiritual realities, we should al- ways approach an Orthodox Church with the deepest attitude of reverence. Even when passing an Orthodox Church on foot or in a car, we always cross ourselves out of respect for the presence of God therein. It is, indeed, unthinkable that we should ever pass in front of an Orthodox Church without showing such rev- erence. Therefore, it is obvious that we must approach our meeting with the heavenly realm during Divine Services with careful and proper preparation. When preparing for Church, we should always dress as we would for a visit to an important dignitary. After all, we are about to enter into the very presence of God. Therefore, casual apparel is not appropriate. For example, shorts should never be St. -

Liturgical Functions of Late Byzantine Art: an Analysis of the Thessaloniki Epitaphios
Issue 5 2016 Funding for Vexillum provided by The Medieval Studies Program at Yale University Issue 5 Available online at http://vexillumjournal.org/ Liturgical Functions of Late Byzantine Art: An Analysis of the Thessaloniki Epitaphios JUDITH SHANIKA PELPOLA STANFORD UNIVERSITY The Thessaloniki Epitaphios, a late Byzantine embroidered textile, is an important piece to consider in the study of Byzantine art and its role in liturgy. In this paper, I undertake a stylistic and formalistic analysis of the inscriptions, depiction of the humanity of Christ, and treatment of time in the Thessaloniki Epitaphios to determine if the Epitaphios had liturgical rather than simply symbolic functions, thus helping contextualize Byzantine art within the Western canon. Analyzing the potential for the liturgical function of this piece additionally sheds light onto how Byzantine art itself should be classified with regards to the Western canon. Introduction The role of late Byzantine pieces in liturgical rites has been subject to a longstanding debate in the field, with one of the most recent subjects of this discussion being the Thessaloniki Epitaphios (see Figure 1). A silk on linen textile, the Epitaphios originates from Thessaloniki, Greece, circa 1300.1 Located on a trade route that connected Constantinople and Durazzo on the Adriatic, Thessaloniki was a key commercial port and site for religious pilgrimage in late Byzantium.2 Several stylistic features, in particular the expressiveness of the figures, suggest the Epitaphios was produced during the late Byzantine Palaiologan Dynasty (1259-1453), under which Thessaloniki reached its cultural height, and when there was a significant emphasis in the culture on liturgical rites.3 Thus, artworks created during the Palaiologan Dynasty invites scrutiny with respect to their roles as active participants in liturgical rites. -

The Office of Little Compline with the Akathist Canon and Hymn **As served on the fifth Friday of Great Lent** **Instructions** An icon of the Theotokos (preferably the one described in the Synaxarion below) is placed on a stand in the middle of the solea. The candles are lit and the church is semi-illumined. The censer is used only for the stases of the Akathist Hymn. The curtain and Holy Doors are closed until the priest begins the first stasis of the Akathist Hymn. The priest wears a blue epitrachelion over his exorasson and starts Little Compline in front of the icon. Priest: Blessed is our God always, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Choir: Amen. Priest: Glory to Thee, O God, glory to Thee. O heavenly King, the Comforter, Spirit of Truth, Who art in all places, and fillest all things, Treasury of good things, and Giver of life, come, and dwell in us, and cleanse us from every stain; and save our souls, O good One. People: Holy God, Holy Mighty, Holy Immortal: have mercy on us. (THRICE) Glory to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit; both now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen. The Dormition of our Most Holy Lady “This is none other than the House of God. the Theotokos and Ever Virgin Mary And this is the Gate of Heaven” Genesis 28:17 Concerning the Dormition of the Theotokos, this is what the Church has received from ancient times from the tradi- tion of the Fathers. When the time drew nigh that our Sav- ior was well-pleased to take His Mother to Himself, He declared unto her through an Angel that three days hence, He would translate her from this temporal life to eternity and bliss. On hearing this, she went up with haste to the Mount of Olives, where she prayed continuously. Giving thanks to God, she returned to her house and prepared whatever was necessary for her burial. While these things were taking place, clouds caught up the Apostles from the ends of the earth, where each one happened to be preach- ing, and brought them at once to the house of the Mother of God, who informed them of the cause of their sudden gathering. As a mother, she consoled them in their affliction as was meet, and then raised her hands to Heaven and prayed for the peace of the world. She blessed the Apostles, and, reclining upon her bed with seemliness, gave up her all-holy spirit into the hands of her Son and God. With reverence and many lights, and chanting burial hymns, the Apostles took up that God-receiving body and brought it to the sepulchre, while the Angels from Heaven chanted with them, and sent forth her who is higher than the Cherubim.
