Paul Papalia CSC MLA Minister for Tourism Australian Masters Rowing Championships | 22 – 25 May 2019 On behalf of the Government of Western Australia, it is my pleasure to welcome you to the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre for the Australian Masters Rowing Championships. The State Government is proud to be a sponsor through Tourism Western Australia. Supporting mass participation events, such as the Championships, is part of the Government’s plan to promote the State and increase visitor numbers. The Championships will attract competitors from every State in Australia, as well as the Australian Capital Territory, across twelve age divisions. International competitors and representatives from more than 20 international rowing federations have also been invited to take part. This represents a fantastic opportunity to showcase all that WA has to offer to overseas markets such as the United Kingdom, Hong Kong, Singapore and Japan. Since this event was last held at the Champion Lakes Regatta Centre in 2010, our capital city has changed markedly. Perth has undergone a major transformation, now boasting world-class accommodation and entertainment infrastructure, vibrant nightlife and a wide variety of new bars and restaurants, as well as being safe, clean and close to nature. I hope all involved in these Championships enjoy their time in Perth and have the chance to explore more of WA. I also wish everyone a successful event. We are honoured to have been chosen by Rowing Australia (RA) to host this pinnacle event for masters rowing in Australia in 2019. We are particularly delighted that so many have chosen to make the trek across the Nullarbor and across the seas to the remotest capital city on earth, and to this great FISA-accredited racing course here at Champion Lakes. We are particularly pleased to welcome the contingents of competitors from Japan, Hong Kong, The UK and China. We hope our visitors will stay on to enjoy some great West Aussie hospitality after the event. In addition to the championship events, there are also a good number of competitors who have chosen to stay on the extra day to compete in the epic Perth to Fremantle Head race. There is an exciting week of racing ahead! An event like the Australian Masters Rowing Championships is simply not possible but for the dedicated army of volunteers who will be supporting the day to day running of the event and who have done so much work in the lead up. The organising committee from Rowing Australia and Rowing Western Australia, led by RWA CEO, Daniel Tackenberg, have done an outstanding job. They have collaborated closely and effectively over the past 12 months to prepare this premium course and to organise and promote the racing and social events. Finally, let me thank our sponsors; The Government of Western Australian and Thrifty Car Rental. Their support reduces the financial burden on competitors and adds to the quality of the program we are able to offer. May the racing be fun, spirited and competitive; May you reignite friendships and create new ones; and May you delight in everything Western Australia has to offer.
