Newsletter 8, December 2014

Mark Dempster, Mathematics From the Principal... Peter Splitek, Coordinator Science It is hard to believe that the 2014 school year is over. Reflecting back, I am extremely pleased with the achievements of our students. Our Year 8-11 Awards Ceremony highlighted our students’ incredible commitment to achieve outstanding results. It also highlighted how community minded our students are with a huge number winning awards for school service. While the year was coming to an end for senior students, Year 8 and 9 students continued working hard to prepare for their important end of year presentations. The Year 8 Show Case held in the George Cresswell Hall on Tuesday 9 December 2014 was extremely successful Rob Handley, Mathematics with over 90% of parents attending their child's presentation. Many parents commented on Daphne White, Home Economics what a wonderful experience it was for them to listen to their child discussing their learning and the highlights of their year. Similarly, the Year 9 Presentations were outstanding and displayed the huge array of challenging activities students participate in during the year. Every year our teachers work extremely hard to support students by delivering high quality learning experiences. In Week 7 this term, staff from all Learning Areas shared the work of their Professional Learning Team (PLT) with their colleages; what they have achieved and what their next steps will be in 2015. The PLTs further highlight our teachers’ commitment Karin Wichmann, LOTE Teacher John McKenzie, HASS Teacher to continue to learn together and find new and exciting ways to engage and support our students to achieve their absolute best. A number of our most experienced teachers have retired this year or are taking Long Service Leave in Term 1 2015, with the intention of retiring at the end of their leave. They are, Rob Handley, Kathy Purvis, Daphne White, Karin Wichmann, John McKenzie, Mark, Dempster, Helen Noble, Peter Splitek and Jenni Miliauskas. These outstanding teachers have worked tirelessly to support students from both Unley High School and a range of different secondary Schools to achieve to their highest potential. They have also mentored new Mick Newman, Laboratory Manager Jenni Miliauskas, Coordinator Library teachers, sharing both their wisdom and their expertise. Their biggest contribution though, has been the positive relationships they have built with students, parents, colleagues and the entire school community. They will be missed by all of us. We thank them for their commitment to young people and their outstanding work over the course of their teaching career. We wish them all the best in their Retirement. Additionally, we farewell Trevor Stewart our Site Maintenance Manager and Mick Newman our Laboratory Manager who have also retired. Over many years Trevor has supported our school community by ensuring that our facilities are maintained and any necessary upgrades Trevor Stewart, Helen Noble, Mathematics are done quickly and efficiently. Similarly, Mick has supported the Science Learning Area staff Site Maintenance Manager by organising any equipment they needed for experiments. Mick also supported students by being actively involved in the organisation of the Oliphant Science Awards. Trevor and Mick will be missed by the school community, we thank them for their hard work and wish them all the best for the future. I would like to thank all staff for their hard work and commitment throughout 2014. New Principal It is with great pleasure that I welcome Ms Brenda Harris as the Principal of Unley High

Kathy Purvis Coordinator LOTE School for 2015 to 2021. Head of the River Regatta News 2015 Unley High School to Host the South Australian Head of the River in 2015 Unley High School has a proud tradition of being just one of three public schools in that competes at the prestigious Head of the River Regatta along with twelve private schools. The Head of the River Regatta is the ‘Grand Final’ of the local season attracting upwards of 15,000 spectators from across the State, generally consisting of school students, parents and past scholars of the competing schools. Each year, the Head of the River Regatta is hosted by one of the participating schools so this opportunity only occurs once every fifteen years. On 21 March 2015, this is the responsibility of Unley High School. The event originally started in 1922 as a challenge between Adelaide High School and St Peters College and was held on the Torrens Lake. From these small beginnings the event has grown to become ’s largest championship rowing regatta. Races are generally hard-fought, close encounters that showcase the very best of school rowing talent, with the winning 1st VIII crew each year being crowned with the title of 'Head of the River'. Although the event covers all school ages from Year 8 through to Year 12, the premier events are the Gosse Shield for Schoolboy 1st VIII and the Florence Eaton Cup for Schoolgirl 1st VIII. Unley High School last won the girls event in 1988 and 1989 and has been prominent in winning many of the younger age events over the years. Unley High School’s senior boys last won the Schoolboy 1st VIII in 1987 and this year our crew aims to finish higher than our 4th place in 2014! 2015 Head of the River Regatta - Hosted by Unley High School – What does this involve? The Unley High School Rowing Club is currently one the largest rowing clubs in South Australia with approximately 120 school-age rowers. The club is unique in that is has an extremely active parent and coaching group. Our uniform (zootie) utilises the Oxford and Cambridge blue colours, the traditional colours of the school. Hosting the event will showcase Unley High School, and the size of the event means that preparations are well underway and that the whole school community will be approached to assist where possible. This mainly involves providing volunteers to assist with running the regatta as well as hosting a breakfast for each of the school’s special dignitaries. It also allows our school to have the prominent school site adjacent to the finish line where our school banners and our logo for the event will be displayed. We will also sell associated merchandise and organise a breakfast and refreshments for all Unley High School rowing families and volunteers. How can the school community get involved? The Head of the River Regatta provides a wonderful opportunity to showcase Unley High School to the South Australian community. As such, the Rowing Club invites the school community to also be involved on the day in a volunteer or vocal support capacity. An organising committee that oversees several sub-committees have started meeting on a regular basis and are already seeking the support of many parent and student groups within the school, as well as past scholars to assist on the day. Many of these jobs require no rowing-associated expertise so we invite anyone who is interested to offer their assistance. More information on the history of Unley High School’s involvement with the Head of the River Regatta will follow in future editions of the Newsletter along with details on how groups may assist, so please follow our progress and please consider being part of this great event. For further information, please contact Joshua Whitwell, Rowing Manager on [email protected]

Music News Our Year 8 and 9 Music students performed at our annual Twilight Concert on Tuesday 4 November 2014, to an appreciative crowd of parents and friends. The concert was very successful with the Year 8 and 9 groups doing an excellent job to present a full, varied program of music including class bands, small ensembles and soloists. Our Year 10 classes combined to present a Cabaretteconcert on Monday 24 November 2014. We were very pleased to welcome a large number of family and friends to the performance and had a very enjoyable night performing a huge variety of songs. Highlights included a sing along encouraged version of Bon Jovi’s Living on a Prayer, a captivating piano performance ofPetrarch’s 104th Sonnet (Liszt) by Oliver Shi, and a shredding guitar solo by Riley Muxlow of Lenny Kravitz’s Fields of Joy. Year 11 rock band “Where the Wild Things Are” have recently given their debut full set performance at ScorcherFest on Saturday 29 November 2014. They were invited to perform in this concert after competing in the Mitcham Youth Fest Battle of the Bands, and Year 11 students Josh Batic (guitar/vocals), Yani Shafeeg (guitar/vocals), Patrick MacDonald (bass guitar/vocals) and Year 10 student Jake “Windmill” White (drums) played a set of originals and covers. “Where the Wild Things Are” is rapidly developing a following and the band gave a terrific performance of their song Uno at our Year 8-11 Awards Ceremony on Friday 21 November 2014. Other musical groups featured at the Awards Ceremony were Year 10 students Emily Downing and Taelah Rowlands singing the Advance Australia Fair, Emily and Georgina Trotta performing a heartfelt acoustic rendition of Skinny Love and the Junior Rock band performing Smells Like Teen Spirit. (Year 8’s Ella Neumann, Maria Zervaas, Callum Turner, and Alex Mancera-Davic, and Year 9’s Hamish Bramley and Bailey Winterford). The Senior Vocal Ensemble and Flute Ensemble have also been very busy in the last few weeks. Both groups were invited to perform at the Mitcham Village Kindergarten for the opening of their Art Exhibition on 5 November 2014. This was a wonderful opportunity to contribute to an event in our local community, and the staff at Mitcham Village Kindergarten were incredibly appreciative of our students’ performances. The Flute Ensemble provided the perfect atmosphere for the opening of the Year 12 Arts Exhibition on Thursday 20 November 2014 in their final performance of the year, and the Senior Vocal Ensemble were very pleased to be part of the Year 11 Arts Exhibition, which was a wonderful event attended by a very large number of students and parents on Friday 28 November 2014. The Year 9 class recorded radio programs as part of their final task for the year, and these were played in the Rose Garden at lunchtimes during Week 8, showing a very wide variety of musical interests and some talented dining. And finally we’d like to let you know about our Soundcloud account “UHS Music” which showcases some of the best work in our music technology program. I encourage you to log in and give us a few “likes”. In this our final Newsletter of the year, Music Teachers would like to extend a big thank you to all the students and staff who have contributed to the Unley High School Music Program throughout the year; rehearsing and performing as part of the Concert Band, Jazz Band, Junior Vocal Ensemble, Senior Vocal Ensemble, Junior Rock Band, Flute Ensemble, and the pit orchestra for our musical Oliver!. We would also like to acknowledge the hard work and initiative of Year 11 students who have presented the Big Day In and four Ragefest Lunchtime Concerts for students and Year 12 student Kristy Kyriacou for organizing a charity concert. It has been a busy but enjoyable year, and we look forward to 2015! Chris Martin and Carol Hollis, Music Teachers

Year 9 Community Project Year 11 News The highlight of the year for Year 11 students was the Year 11 Semi-Formal which was held on Thursday 4 September 2014 at the Stamford Grand Hotel, Glenelg. Over 200 students and staff attended this exciting event. Guests arrived in style enjoying refreshments on arrival and at 7:00pm the ballroom doors swished open to a theme of black, gold and pearl. Also adding to the excitement of the event was who was seated on the lucky chairs? A three course meal was enjoyed throughout the night and “Where The Wild Things Are” (the Year 11 band), entertained with original music and covers getting everyone up and dancing. Student comments about the night included “Amazing night!” “Fantastic night” and “Loved dressing up and enjoyed our time with other Year 11 students.” Another highlight of the event was the presentation of awards to individual students. Matt Johnson and Annabel Bramely hosted the evening on behalf of the Semi-Formal Committee. A big thank you to the organising Committee for all their hard work. Their efforts were rewarded by a fantastic evening enjoyed by all. Another important event for Year 11 students this year was the Road Awareness Program where students and staff participated in a presentation which raised critical issues Home Group 9-507 - Women’s and Children’s Hospital about being a responsible driver and passenger in a car. Arts News Year 12 Art and Design Exhibition On 20 November 2014, Unley High School held our annual Year 12 Art and Design Exhibition which showcased Year 12 Art and Design work for 2014. This year Art Teacher Robert Zunic and I were extremely impressed and proud of both Year 12 Art and Design classes. They demonstrated sophisticated and high-end design work alongside exceptional skill and use of media in the art pieces. Ingrid Kellenbach from Central School of Art at Glenside was our guest speaker for the evening. She spoke of how impressed she was with the Year 12’s dedication to Art and Design. She commented on how much attention to detail there was in the presentation of the design pieces and how fortunate students were to have access to the large scale printer on site. This she said, “allowed students to take their work to the next level and execute high levels of presentation”. Ingrid spoke of the art work and how students represent themselves through their personal stories. “The artists’ statements were ‘raw’ and ‘edgy’ and showed a particular skill in writing about artworks” The show was attended by a large audience of students, family members and staff. Robert and I were very thankful to have Joanne Costa, our Principal, in attendance. She commented in her speech about how proud she was of our students, how dedicated and committed they were to ensuring they had done their very best by the end of the course. I am pleased to announce that Design student Lisa Vuong’s ONYX studio identity and folio has been chosen to be in the SACE Art and Design Show for 2015. Congratulations Lisa! We wish our students every success in the future and look forward to many students choosing a discipline in the Visual Arts at University or Art School next year. Rheanna Dougherty, Arts Coordinator

Home Economics News Year 12 Food and Hospitality Studies The two Year 12 Food and Hospitality classes have continued to push the limits of creativity and have achieved excellence in their food practicals this Semester. A highlight was an excursion to the Adelaide Hilton where students enjoyed breakfast together, ordering eggs to order and observing trends in healthy eating choices which influenced their breakfast food choices. The flavours of the course have been small plates, breakfast, food trucks, regional and local foods, dessert bars and cupcakes. The approach for students has been to develop their practical skills and embrace current trends such as sourcing local foods to be incorporated into their food dishes. This was evident with students embracing the concept of local foods and minimising wastage in the production of indulgent treats, such as petite Lemon Meringue Tarts and Raspberry Yoghurt Cake. Both classes presented their sustainable indulgent treats to staff at recess time. Breakfast was an opportunity for the students to work in small teams to select, prepare and present their healthy breakfast to staff and peers. This gave students the opportunity to showcase a range of food skills, customer service and knowledge of healthy food trends in the breakfast scene. Food choices ranged from Shakshuka, a north African/Middle Eastern style dish of eggs poached in a tomato, chilli and onion sauce served with Turkish bread, Buckwheat pancakes with fresh berries, muesli fruit parfait and breakfast muffins. Students also had the opportunity to showcase their individual skills in desserts and cupcakes where creativity, originality and advanced techniques were the order of the day. Rowing News Year 9 Girls Fundraising On Tuesday of Week 6, the Year 9 Girls Rowing Squad held a Bake Sale. Rowing is a demanding sport with very expensive equipment. Unley High School is one of three public schools in the secondary school category, meaning endless supplies of boats and oars don't come easily compared to the private schools and so the Unley High School Rowing Club is consistently holding fundraisers to help buy new equipment. One very important piece of equipment is the Cox Box, which is a special waterproof microphone that runs through the boat. Coxes are the Rowers who sit at the front of the boat and call out motivational words to their crew and steer the boat. Being able to hear them is very important to the crew's success. Cox Boxes cost approximately $500, not the cheapest things. Unley High School only has a few Cox Boxes which are usually used by the seniors, so our crew thought “why don't we do a fundraiser to buy one for our squad?”. We made a list of everything we had to do in order to make the Bake Sale a success and we also talked with Krispy Kremes, Adelaide's donut phenomenon shop and we were very lucky to have five boxes donated for our Bake Sale. All the girls made delicious treats from cupcakes and slices to cookies. After counting our funds we raised over $500, so our sale was a success. Thank you to everyone who bought something and a special thanks to Krispy Kremes as without them, we wouldn't have made nearly as much money! By Rachel Woodhouse, Year 9

Regattas In recent weeks Unley High School Rowing Club as competed at numerous Rowing Regattas with great success across the entire Club. On the weekend of 29 November 2014, Unley High School Junior Rowers took part in the Adelaide Rowing Club Junior Regatta. It was pleasing to see the Year 9 Girls B Crew along with the Year 9 Boys A and B Crews all experience well deserved first placing’s. Unfortunately the week prior saw the cancelation of the Pembroke West Lakes Regatta due to adverse weather conditions. Presently the Rowing Club is getting geared up for the annual Riverland Regatta to be held in Berri. This Regatta held over the weekend of the 6 and 7 December 2014 provides a great opportunity for rowers and their families to head up to the mighty Murray to take part in what usually results in some close and exciting racing.

Sport News 2014 has flown by and we are looking forward to the summer holidays. Our last few weeks of sport were as busy as ever with the last of our Saturday morning sports, knockout events, carnivals and interstate trips. We struggled a little with numbers for our Cricket teams for this last term with many boys having taken on different commitments making Saturday mornings tricky. We still managed to field three teams, although occasionally a little short on boys. We had some great results though and fortunately the weather was mostly kind to us with only one week needing to be cancelled due to storms. Our Badminton team, which was made up of players of various ages and abilities, improved consistently during the season and we came away with some well-earned victories. The two girl’s Touch teams had great seasons with the Year 8-9 team finishing first in the Junior A division and the open team finishing second in the Senior A division which is a fantastic effort. Our last knockout competitions were the Year 8-9 girls’ Basketball and also Softball. Our Softball girls reached the finals day which turned out to be an extremely stormy, wet day. As a result only one game was played by each of the four teams and final placing’s had to be determined by this one game and minor round results. The Unley High School girls ended up in third position which was a fantastic effort. Our Year 8-9 Basketball girls had a fantastic competition making it to the finals day where they too came in at third place. Well done to all of these girls. Our last couple of carnivals were Year 8-9 Beach Volleyball where we had five teams, one boys’ team doing extremely well to make the grand final but a great day of play had by all. We also had two Year 8-9 boy’s teams compete in a Cricket Super 8’s Carnival where our Year 9 team came first and the Year 8 team third so a great effort by all of those boys. Our final carnival day was a Beach Sport Activity Day for a number of Year 8 students. This was a great day with all of our students representing Unley High School in a fantastic way, behaving perfectly and remaining engaged and involved in the sports all afternoon. In Week 8 we sent three boys’ teams and one girls’ team to Canberra to take part in the Australian Schools Championships for Basketball. This is always a fantastic week of competition for our basketballers and this year was no different. The children were superb, played like champions and were wonderful ambassadors for Unley High School. The junior boys played well above their weight division but improved all week long and ended the week with a win, a heroic effort. The senior girls suffered a few injuries during the week and lost in the play-off for Bronze which was not bad considering there are students from Year 9 in our team, playing in the Under 20 division. The senior boys first team walked away with a Bronze Medal, a fantastic result considering our boys looked like pins compared to the other teams who all seemed to field giants in their line-up! And again, they played in the Under 20's competition so truly a great result. The senior boys’ second team also played-off for Bronze and only went down by a small margin, again, a team of pins from Years 10 and 11 playing in the Under 20's competition. What our kids lacked in size and muscle, they certainly make up for in skill, strength of character, determination, desire, endurance and a whole lot of Unley High School team spirit. Currently we have three Volleyball teams in Melbourne competing in the Australian Schools Cup, the biggest secondary schools sporting event in the Southern Hemisphere. This event attracts over 4,000 athletes from 130 schools in Australia and New Zealand. Historically this trip has also been a huge success for Unley High School in terms of team development, experience and often results so we trust that this is the case again this year and we look forward to hearing how they go. Whilst in Canberra for the Basketball, we saw Year 12 student, Conal McAinsh who has been at an Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) selection camp for Volleyball. He has been asked to return to Canberra next year to train with the AIS for six months, followed by the opportunity to go to Canada to attend college there with his Volleyball. Huge congratulations to Conal on these very exciting offers. Congratulations also to Rachel Tonkin in Year 10 who has been selected for the 2015 Under 17 State Softball team who will play in the ACT in January next year. Also in Softball, Hayley Bonython in Year 9 and Lily Cameron in Year 8 have been selected for the Under 15 State Development Softball team. Gracie Henderson in Year 9 has been selected as a reserve for the Under 18 State girls’ Hockey team who will be paying in Adelaide in April. Fantastic sporting achievements by all of these students. Wishing everyone a lovely summer break and a happy Christmas. I look forward to seeing our sporting students again in 2015. Anna Henderson, Sports Coordinator

Secondary Schools Tax File Number (TFN) Program Changes to how students get their Tax File Number The Secondary Schools Tax File Number (TFN) Program will not continue beyond 31 December 2014. This means that School TFN forms, will no longer be processed beyond this date. How students can apply for a TFN from 1 January 2015 The Australian Taxation Office, in partnership with Australia Post, is making it easier for individuals to apply for a TFN. Applying online is the fastest and most convenient way for students to get a TFN. More information on applying online can be found at www.ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC27248' Students who are unable to visit a participating Australia Post office will need to complete the application form Tax file number application or enquiry for individuals form (NAT 1432). More information about lodging this form can be found at www.ato.gov.au by searching for 'QC22604' Further information will be available at school or from the Tax Office in early 2015.
