A LEGACY OF HOPE IN THE CONCERT SPIRITUALS OF ROBERT NATHANIEL DETT (1882-1943) AND WILLIAM LEVI DAWSON (1899-1990) A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate Faculty of the North Dakota State University of Agriculture and Applied Science By Jeffrey Carroll Stone, II In Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS Major Department Music April 2017 Fargo, North Dakota North Dakota State University Graduate School Title A LEGACY OF HOPE IN THE CONCERT SPIRITUALS OF ROBERT NATHANIEL DETT (1882-1943) AND WILLIAM LEVI DAWSON (1899-1990) By Jeffrey Carroll Stone, II The Supervisory Committee certifies that this disquisition complies with North Dakota State University’s regulations and meets the accepted standards for the degree of DOCTOR OF MUSICAL ARTS SUPERVISORY COMMITTEE: Dr. Michael Weber Chair Dr. JoAnn Miller Dr. Cassie Keogh Dr. Ashley Baggett Approved: April 12, 2017 Dr. JoAnn Miller Date Department Chair ABSTRACT When the careers of the composers Robert Nathaniel Dett (1882-1943) and William Levi Dawson (1899-1990) began, the United States was a racially-divided society. Despite this division, both composers held a firm belief in the potential of spirituals to bring people together. Racial segregation severely limited the civil rights of people of color; however, Dett and Dawson were fueled by the hope for spirituals to bridge the racial divide in America. Both composers desired to achieve racial equality through their music. I argue that these aspirations are embodied within their concert spirituals. This disquisition examines the legacies of Dett and Dawson for the role of “hope” in their concert spirituals. -

2017 Summerhill Stud Sale of Mares and Weanlings
“As One Door Closes, Another One Opens…” There is never a good time to do this, more so as it involves the dispersal of the families that have brought international recognition to Summerhill. When our former stud manager John Slade, was assisting with our mating plans last July, he was charmed by the layered evolution of our broodmares through generations of the leading stallions Northern Guest, Home Guard, Liloy, Rambo Dancer, National Emblem, Fard, Kahal and Muhtafal, all of them “top ten” luminaries, several of them national champions in one category or another. While this is an emotional time for all of us, it’s an opportune one for our colleagues. Our good friend Graham Beck, laid the foundations for his stellar successes at Highlands and Maine Chance through his legendary “raids” on their stock, as well as those of the Noreen, Scott Bros. and Hartford studs. For our own part, the partnerships we’d assembled in 1987 were dispersed on their maturity in 1998, and we were left with just 26 mares on the farm; seven years later, through our re- investment in those families, we’d won the first of ten national premierships. Famously, the dams of Jet Master, Royal Chalice, Angus and Pierre Jourdan, among many others, were acquired right here, as was Varsfontein’s “Blue Hen”, Secret Pact. While Summerhill’s successes owe much to the stallions that’ve decorated our barn over the decades, it’s arguable that we’ve never been better served than in the outstanding young sprinter-milers currently doing duty here, Act Of War, Capetown Noir, Willow Magic and Linngari; they comprise the bulk of the covering sires in the catalogue. -

British Films 1971-1981
Preface This is a reproduction of the original 1983 publication, issued now in the interests of historical research. We have resisted the temptations of hindsight to change, or comment on, the text other than to correct spelling errors. The document therefore represents the period in which it was created, as well as the hard work of former colleagues of the BFI. Researchers will notice that the continuing debate about the definitions as to what constitutes a “British” production was topical, even then, and that criteria being considered in 1983 are still valid. Also note that the Dept of Trade registration scheme ceased in May 1985 and that the Eady Levy was abolished in the same year. Finally, please note that we have included reminders in one or two places to indicate where information could be misleading if taken for current. David Sharp Deputy Head (User Services) BFI National Library August 2005 ISBN: 0 85170 149 3 © BFI Information Services 2005 British Films 1971 – 1981: - back cover text to original 1983 publication. What makes a film British? Is it the source of its finance or the nationality of the production company and/or a certain percentage of its cast and crew? Is it possible to define a British content? These were the questions which had to be addressed in compiling British Films 1971 – 1981. The publication includes commercial features either made and/or released in Britain between 1971 and 1981 and lists them alphabetically and by year of registration (where appropriate). Information given for each film includes production company, studio and/or major location, running time, director and references to trade paper production charts and Monthly Film Bulletin reviews as source of more detailed information. -

Music and Race in the American West by William Steven Schneider A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Thesis Committee: David Johnson, Chair Katrine Barber Catherine McNeur Josh Epstein Portland State University 2017 © 2017 William Steven Schneider Abstract This thesis explores the complexities of race relations in the nineteenth century American West. The groups considered here are African Americans, Anglo Americans, Chinese, Mexican Americans, and Native Americans. In recent decades historians of the West have begun to tell the narratives of racial minorities. This study adopts the aims of these scholars through a new lens—music. Ultimately, this thesis argues that historians can use music, both individual songs and broader conceptions about music, to understand the complex and contradictory race relations of the nineteenth century west. -
Somerset Records Discography
Somerset/Stereo Fidelity by David Edwards, Patrice Eyries & Mike Callahan © 2018 by Mike Callahan Somerset/Stereo Fidelity Records Discography Somerset Records was a division of Miller International Co. located in Media Pennsylvania. David L Miller was the President and had previously owned, Essex Records and Trans-World Records. Somerset was started in 1958. The output of the label was popular, jazz and classical. Of the first 63 releases on Somerset, 62 of them were straight reissues of Trans-World albums. After Somerset/Stereo Fidelity, Miller was involved with two other budget labels Alshire and Sutton. The Sales Manager was Joe Martin and Miller handled A&R. Somerset was a budget label whose albums listed for sale for $1.98, when most albums sold for $3.98 in the ‘50s and ‘60s. A subsidiary label was Stereo Fidelity, the only difference between the two labels was that the monaural record was a Somerset and the stereo record was on the Stereo Fidelity label. The numbers were the same. Main Series Canadian LP’s in this series did not use the last two zeros, for example SF-12700 was SF-127, leading to endless confusion about the Somerset release numbers.
