Dear Friends, September 2016

In California there is a bank next to a cemetery and its advertising slogan is: ‘You can’t take it with you, but you can have it near you’. This reminds me of that very famous sec- tion from St Matthew’s gospel ‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also’.

I was always advised that I should have some savings – and of course that is good sound advice, but there comes a point where the accumulation of wealth becomes all consum- ing. I have known two people who have died in apparent poverty, leaving sizeable amounts of money behind and both of them were obsessed with saving. I cannot help but feel an intense sadness at the thought that they both put such a huge amount of their time into amassing that money, which if they didn’t want it, could have been put to good use. Jesus tells us - in Matthew’s gospel - that the only wealth we should build up is heavenly wealth – that is, those aspects of our spirit that will put us in good standing with God and that is what he means by accumulating the things that will last. The only thing that sur- vives at the end of our life is ourselves, so we need to ensure that we are in good spiritual condition! We lose everything if we have our heads so buried in this world that we lose sight of the next. Jesus never said that this world is unimportant, but its real importance is in that to which it leads. William Barclay said: ‘The Church has always believed that what we keep, we lose, and what we give, we keep’.

There are no cash machines in heaven, but you can store up for yourselves treasures in heaven (Matthew 6.20).

With my prayers and best wishes,

Bedfield News

Sad news that June, wife of Tony Fairweather has died aged 80. June died peacefully at home after a long period of illness. A graveside farewell service took place at Farnham Woodland Burial Ground on Wednesday August 24th.. Donations if desired for St. Elizabeth Hospice may be sent c/o Moore Bros, 5 Woodbridge Road, IP13 9LL A memorial service will be held at a later date. June will always be remembered for her love of her garden and growing and sowing , and generously giving away plants to friends and for fund raising

Our community event fund raiser ‘The Scarecrow Trail’ with games and refreshments on the Sports Field was organised by Mat and Anna Reed for fund raising to be shared by Bedfield School and St. Nicholas Church. Mat and Anna worked very hard to make the event successful. It was well supported with lots of families and groups cycling or walking round the trail. As I reported in July’s Parish magazine, the scarecrow to win by popular vote was ‘Miss Tiggy Winkle made by Barbara and David Lee.

St. Nicholas Church, Bedfield, Church Cleaning and Flowers for September: Gloria Bell September 25th is our Family Service at 9.30am at St. Nicholas Church. You are very welcome to join us for the service with refreshments at the end.

8 th Bedfield & Monk Soham Gardening Club 19 August held at Bedfield Sports Pavilion 7.30pm Juliet & Martin Piece recently had a family holiday in Kerala India. They both lived in India for some time and their first son was born there. While they were there Martin and Juliet spent three days with a group who cared about the ancient forests and the biodiversity that was being lost to rapid forest clearance to make way for cash crops such as tea plantations. The Gurukula Botanical Sanctuary helpers led by Suprabha Seshan ‘Subi’ for short, collect the rare plants and orchids from the forests which will be cut down, and re-pot them with love and care to nurse them and bring them on to plant them back into untouched forest. Juliet’s presentation showed us the process that the Sanctuary does with some stunning pictures of the work that is done to save these plants. Subi has done a huge amount of research and passed on her knowledge to many people. Her work has been acknowledged and in 2006 she received the Whitley Award in 2006. This very influential body recognised the importance of her work. This was a thought provoking evening. Although the an- cient forests are thousands of miles from us, cutting them down will have a damaging effect on the whole of the world. We finished with drinks and some home made Indian delights. Thank you Juliet. Next month September 16th 7.30pm at the Sports Pavilion We will be doing Seed Saving, how to do it, and its benefits as a gardener. A little bit of origami - making seed packets with seeds in it perhaps to pass on as a gift. What is meant by ‘Putting the garden to bed’- a discussion. I have quite a lot of very well composted horse manure. If you are interested in having some I have some quite large feed bags to put it in. It makes a great soil improver and is good for veg growing. If you are interested please ring Gloria Bell 01728 685 442

Music in the Garden 13th August 2016 We were blessed with a lovely afternoon and evening for the Puffins to play and for us all to enjoy our picnics. Rob and Debbie Rogers who live in Bedfield brought eight other Puffins to play glorious summer music. Altogether eighty five adults, twelve children and a few well behaved dogs, who did not add to the music by howling in harmony sat and enjoyed some familiar music and some which was new to many. Rob introduced each piece and gave us some back- ground to the music and the composers. Afterwards we all tucked into our picnics and the players joined us with their supper. The raffle was very well supported with exceptional donations of prizes to choose from. We thank everyone for their support and generosity for raising funds for St. Nicholas Church which was £735.00

BEDFIELD PARISH COUNCIL

Bedfield Pavilion and Sports Field Long Green, Bedfield DOG FOULING ON SPORTS FIELD The pavilion and sports field is managed by Bedfield and Monk Soham Sports Club on behalf of the Parish Council, who are the lessee. The field is situated in a beautiful location and is widely used by residents of Bedfield, Monk Soham and the surrounding villages.

Despite previous publicity and warning signs, the use of the field is still being plagued by the actions of a few who either accidentally or deliberately do not clean up after their dogs. As we have said before, the field is widely used as a children’s play area and we are also looking to re-introduce football again on a regular basis.

Regrettably we must say that unless matters improve we will have no option but to either insist that all dogs are kept strictly on their leads or ban dogs altogether. We are also considering CCTV to monitor the area.

Please clean up after your dog(s) to avoid this action having to be taken. It would be a great shame to have to “punish” the vast majority of the responsible dog walkers for the irresponsi- ble actions of the very few.

Finally, please DO NOT put dog waste in the pavilion dustbins as this causes problems for our caretaker. Use the red bin provided for this purpose at the entrance from Long Green.

Your co-operation will be appreciated.
