This reminds me of that very famous sec- tion from St Matthew’s gospel ‘Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust consume and where thieves break in and steal; but store up for yourselves treasures in heaven… for where your treasure is, there your heart will be also’. I was always advised that I should have some savings – and of course that is good sound advice, but there comes a point where the accumulation of wealth becomes all consum- ing. I have known two people who have died in apparent poverty, leaving sizeable amounts of money behind and both of them were obsessed with saving. I cannot help but feel an intense sadness at the thought that they both put such a huge amount of their time into amassing that money, which if they didn’t want it, could have been put to good use. Jesus tells us - in Matthew’s gospel - that the only wealth we should build up is heavenly wealth – that is, those aspects of our spirit that will put us in good standing with God and that is what he means by accumulating the things that will last. The only thing that sur- vives at the end of our life is ourselves, so we need to ensure that we are in good spiritual condition! We lose everything if we have our heads so buried in this world that we lose sight of the next. Jesus never said that this world is unimportant, but its real importance is in that to which it leads. William Barclay said: ‘The Church has always believed that what we keep, we lose, and what we give, we keep’. There are no cash machines in heaven, but you can store up for yourselves treasures in heaven (Matthew 6.20).
