As I am sure you already know, Lent is the 40-day period of abstinence and reflection, marking the 40 days of fasting and temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. This is an aspect of Jesus that is wonderfully human, that he had to face many temptations and keep himself pure before taking up the task of saving us from ourselves. Whether you believe that temptation comes from the devil, or from within ourselves, it is a fact of life that we face every day and it is an unavoidable part of our human vulnerability. Unfortunately, we live in a world which all too often seeks to exploit that vulnerability for its own ends, or as St Peter put it: Your enemy the devil, like a roaring lion, is on the prowl looking for someone to devour! (1 Peter 5:8) Lent finishes on the day before Easter Sunday, and this often results in somebody pointing out to me that 40 days from Ash Wednesday doesn’t go all the way to Easter eve – and they are right! It’s because we traditionally do not include Sundays as a fasting day. In recent years, the idea of ‘giving up something for Lent’ has been extended to tak- ing up something charitable instead – opportunities abound, there are no end of people and charities who could use your help and it doesn’t need to finish at Easter, as Jesus once said, you will always have the poor with you. Another important day this month is Mothering Sunday i.e. March 26th so please check your church’s notice board for special services, along with other events your church may be running to mark Lent and/or to support various charities. Finally, David is running a Lent course on the 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th March at 2pm in the Rectory. If you can, please do some along – I promise that there will be no ‘deep theology’. With my prayers and best wishes, Ron For Pastoral Care, Baptism, Wedding or Funeral arrangements please contact Rev David Burrell, email [email protected] (01986 798136) Address -The Rectory, 15 Noyes Rd, Laxfield, IP13 8EB or Rev. To Charlie Abbott who was awarded the Jubilee Cup for his services as organist at St. Mary's. He is always there, whatever the weather or occasion. Thank you Charlie. LENT. Lent begins on the 1st of March, Ash Wednesday, and is a time of reflection and abstinence as we remember Jesus' forty days in the wilderness. A time too, of prepara- tion for Easter and the risen Christ on Easter Sunday. There will be two Lent Lunches which are essentially frugal, again with abstinence in mind rather than fasting. The first will be at Carter's Farm on the 4th of March, the second on the 25th of March will be at the Community Centre. They will be from 12noon to 2.00pm. Donations are divided between St. Mary's and a chosen charity. MOTHERING SUNDAY SERVICE. This year it is on Sunday, 26th of March at 11.00am in St. Mary's. Please come along to celebrate and give thanks for Mothers (and Grandmothers). Posies will be provided, made by Ladies Guild members to give to Mums and Grandmas to thank them for all they do for us. SUFFOLK COUNTY•RECORDS. The principal justice of the peace in each county is the custos rotulorum or keeper of the records ; the other justices were, formerly, custodes or conservatores pacis, who claimed their power by prescription, or were bound to exercise it by the tenure of their lands, or were chosen by the freeholders in full County Court before the sheriff. After the deposition of Edward II. the election of the conservators of the peace was taken from the people and given to the Kirig. The statute 34 Edw. III. c.1 gave the ,conservators of the peace power of trying felonies, when they acquired the appellation of justices. After 1590 they were ap- pointed to keep the peace in the particular county named, and to enquire of, and to determine .offences in such county committed. It was ordained by Statute 18 Edw. III., st. ,2, c: 2, that two or three of the best reputation in each' county shall be' assigned to be keepers of the peace. By Statute 34 Edw. III. their number was increased to four, and in the reign.of Richard II. their number in each county was eight, which number was further enlarged the growth of the number of statute laws committed from time to time to the charge of the justices of the peace.
