As I am sure you already know, Lent is the 40-day period of abstinence and reflection, marking the 40 days of fasting and temptation of Jesus in the wilderness. This is an aspect of Jesus that is wonderfully human, that he had to face many temptations and keep himself pure before taking up the task of saving us from ourselves. Whether you believe that temptation comes from the devil, or from within ourselves, it is a fact of life that we face every day and it is an unavoidable part of our human vulnerability.

PREFACE. The acquisition of the greater part of the knowledge contained in this vohime has re- sulted Trom the duties and necessities of the Christian ministry in the pastoral care of the First' Church of Southold for the last thirty years. The preparation of the book for the press has been the rest and recreation of many a weary hour during most of this ministry. Various hindrances have resisted the accom- plishment of the undertaking, and caused a less orderly arrangement of the materials of the work, as well as a less vigorous and at- tra6tive style, than could be desired; but the belief is cherished, that the imperfections of the book, however clearly seen by the reader, and deeply felt by the writer, should not for- bid its publication. For it is highly desirable, that the early life and worth—the purpose.

SUFFOLK COUNTY•RECORDS. The principal justice of the peace in each county is the custos rotulorum or keeper of the records ; the other justices were, formerly, custodes or conservatores pacis, who claimed their power by prescription, or were bound to exercise it by the tenure of their lands, or were chosen by the freeholders in full County Court before the sheriff. After the deposition of Edward II. the election of the conservators of the peace was taken from the people and given to the Kirig. The statute 34 Edw. After 1590 they were ap- pointed to keep the peace in the particular county named, and to enquire of, and to determine .offences in such county committed. It was ordained by Statute 18 Edw. We would now like to respond to a number of comments contained within your letter, under the same headings. Context We are very well aware of the UK poultry market dynamics and the historic concentration of the industry within Suffolk but appreciate why you felt it necessary to explain. In the first instance, we would like to point out that the Animal & Plant Health Agency (APHA) Poultry Population Report contained in Appendix 1 of your letter does not reflect an accurate picture of the true density of poultry units in the county. APHA caveats the report contents by stating that “There is significant uncertainty in the accuracy of the information displayed. The creation of maps from incomplete data results in a high risk of incomplete and or misleading information being portrayed. Similarly, population and holding density maps are classified to different scales and units and due care must be taken regarding their interpretation.” The APHA register records poultry holdings upwards of 50 birds and the data includes a wide range of poultry species including turkeys, ducks, geese, and game birds, as well as chickens. Notwithstanding the inaccuracies of the map, it is a matter of record that Mid Suffolk has one of the highest concentrations of intensive livestock farms and as a result has one of the worst records for ammonia pollution in the UK.
