I ask how the “negative” spectrum of behavior toward Jews during the war (blackmail, denunciation, and murder) was displaced by the “positive” spectrum of successful rescue activities driven by noble intentions. This study is an in-depth examination of various themes, motifs, stylizations, and omissions of the Polish historiography from 1945-2011. I examine popular historical writing and contrast it with contradictory information found in personal documents of the wartime period (testimonies, memoirs, studies). As part of the continuum of these patterns, I also discuss artistic representations found in feature films. I conclude that these approaches functioned to deflect negative phenomena in order to sustain a narrative of Polish behavior that reflected positively on Polish-Jewish relations during and after the war. Thus, the historiography was part of a larger pattern to rehabilitate “the good name of Poland” in relation to the Holocaust. iv Table of Contents I. Introduction General Introduction In his magisterial study of postwar Europe, the late Tony Judt wrote that recognition of the Holocaust is “contemporary Europe’s entry ticket” to the modern world.1 Since the collapse of Soviet Communism, the question of the Holocaust’s “bystanders” has taken on new proportions as European societies grapple for a changing identity. In particular, Europe’s rescuers of Jews, the “Righteous among Nations,” have played an integral role in this process. In post-Communist countries, the subject of the rescue of Jews has begun to take on political and ideological significance. The historian Joanna B. Michlic writes how this growing interest “takes on a universal and transnational form in which the rescuers serve as models for contemporary young Europeans,” as well as on local form.2 In the case of contemporary Poland, she sees rescue as a complicated historiographical process treated in various ways: 1) as part of “the new European project on democratic citizenship education and the new investigation embedded in critical history writings” and 2) as a reflection of “patterns of thinking about and manipulating 1 Tony Judt, Postwar: A History of Europe since 1945 (London: William Heinemann, 2005). 803. 2 Joanna B.     Kantor Center Position Papers Editor: Mikael Shainkman March 2014 HOLOCAUST MEMORY AND HOLOCAUST DENIAL IN POLAND AND MOLDOVA: A COMPARISON Natalia Sineaeva-Pankowska* Executive Summary After 1989, post-communist countries such as Poland and Moldova have been faced with the challenge of reinventing their national identity and rewriting their master narratives, shifting from a communist one to an ethnic-patriotic one. In this context, the fate of local Jews and the actions of Poles and Moldovans during the Holocaust have repeatedly proven difficult or even impossible to incorporate into the new national narrative. As a result, Holocaust denial in various forms initially gained ground in post-communist countries, since denying the Holocaust, or blaming it on someone else, even on the Jews themselves, was the easiest way to strengthen national identities. In later years, however, Polish and Moldovan paths towards re-definition of self have taken different paths. At least in part, this can be explained as a product of Poland's incorporation in the European unification project, while Moldova remains in limbo, both in terms of identity and politics – between the Soviet Union and Europe, between the past and the future. Introduction This paper focuses on the debate over Holocaust memory and its link to national identity in two post-communist countries, Poland and Moldova, after 1989. Although their historical, political and social contexts and other factors differ, both countries possess a similar, albeit not identical, communist legacy, and both countries had to accept ‘inconvenient’ truths, such as participation of members of one’s own nation in the Holocaust, while building-rebuilding their new post-communist national identities during a period of social and political transformation.

The Polish “Blue” Police and Collaboration in the Holocaust In 2016, seventy-one years after the end of World War II, the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs disseminated a long list of “wrong memory codes” (błędne kody pamięci), or expressions that “falsify the role of Poland during World War II” and that are to be reported to the nearest Polish diplomat for further action. Sadly—and not by chance—the list elaborated by the enterprising humanists at the Polish Foreign Ministry includes for the most part expressions linked to the Holocaust. On the long list of these “wrong memory codes,” which they aspire to expunge from historical narrative, one finds, among others: “Polish genocide,” “Polish war crimes,” “Polish mass murders,” “Polish internment camps,” “Polish work camps,” and—most important for the purposes of this text—“Polish participation in the Holocaust.” The issue of “wrong memory codes” will from time to time reappear in this study.

    The Kos’ciuszko Chair of Polish Studies Miller Center of Public Affairs University of Virginia Charlottesville, Virginia Bulletin Number Three Fall 2003 On the Cover: The symbol of the KoÊciuszko Squadron was designed by Lt. Elliot Chess, one of a group of Americans who helped the fledgling Polish air force defend its skies from Bolshevik invaders in 1919 and 1920. Inspired by the example of Tadeusz KoÊciuszko, who had fought for American independence, the American volunteers named their unit after the Polish and American hero. The logo shows thirteen stars and stripes for the original Thirteen Colonies, over which is KoÊciuszko’s four-cornered cap and two crossed scythes, symbolizing the peasant volunteers who, led by KoÊciuszko, fought for Polish freedom in 1794. After the Polish-Bolshevik war ended with Poland’s victory, the symbol was adopted by the Polish 111th KoÊciuszko Squadron. In September 1939, this squadron was among the first to defend Warsaw against Nazi bombers. Following the Polish defeat, the squadron was reformed in Britain in 1940 as Royal Air Force’s 303rd KoÊciuszko. This Polish unit became the highest scoring RAF squadron in the Battle of Britain, often defending London itself from Nazi raiders. The 303rd bore this logo throughout the war, becoming one of the most famous and successful squadrons in the Second World War. The title of our bulletin, Nihil Novi, invokes Poland’s ancient constitution of 1505. It declared that there would be “nothing new about us without our consent.” In essence, it drew on the popular sentiment that its American version expressed as “no taxation without representation.” The Nihil Novi constitution guar- anteed that “nothing new” would be enacted in the country without the consent of the Parliament (Sejm).

It had been known about before, but it has now been exposed for the fi rst time in all its pathetic and sordid detail by Raul Hilberg. —Hannah Arendt, Eichmann in Jerusalem: A Report on the Banality of Evil The limit of judgment in relation to “privileged” Jews is crucially im- portant to a consideration of Hilberg’s work, the widespread impact of which cannot be underestimated. His seminal study, The Destruction of the European Jews, has been praised by many as “the single most important work on the Holocaust,” and Hilberg himself has been char- acterized as “the single most important historian” in the fi eld.1 Fur- thermore, the above epigraph makes clear that Arendt’s controversial arguments regarding Jewish leaders (see the introduction) drew heav- ily on Hilberg’s pioneering work. This chapter investigates the part of Hilberg’s work that deals with “privileged” Jews, in order to provide a thematic analysis of the means by which Hilberg passes his overwhelm- ingly negative judgments on this group of Holocaust victims.     Garden of the Righteous Gentiles Siegel Jewish Community Center - Wilmington, Delaware The Garden of the Righteous Gentiles is the first monument in the United States to Christians who saved Jewish lives during the Nazi Holocaust in Europe. The Garden is patterned after the "Avenue of the Righteous'' at Yad Vashem, the Holocaust museum and resource center in Jerusalem. The Holocaust was the systematic mass murder of 6,000,000 Jews by the Nazis and their collaborators during the years 1933-1945. Few non-Jews risked their lives and the lives of their families to defy the murderous Nazis. The Christians honored here are among the heroes of human history. They risked their lives to save Jews from death during the Holocaust. By their actions, they demonstrated that love and decency could flourish amidst unthinkable barbarism. RIGHTEOUS GENTILES REMEMBERED IN THE GARDEN AMSTERDAM ARTIS ROYAL ZOO became a safe haven for many avoiding capture during the years of Nazi occupation of The Netherlands, including Francisca Verdoner Kan of Wilmington. Francisca’s parents sent her and her siblings into hiding after Nazis commandeered their home. She honors Amsterdam’s Artis Royal Zoo, where, as a child, Francisca spent many long days, while staff members hid hundreds of other Jews throughout the zoo, primarily in food storage lofts just above the animal cages. Hiding in these lofts was particularly dangerous, as the zoo was a popular recreation site for the occupying Germans. It was partly due to their frequent attendance, however, that allowed the zoo to remain in operation throughout the war and continually buy food, which not only sustained the animals, but those hiding above their cages as well.

    University of Haifa Weiss-Livnat International MA Program in Holocaust Studies Online course: The Extermination of Polish Jews, 1939-1945 Prof. Jan Grabowski [email protected] In 1939, there were 3.3 million Jews in Poland, or about 10% of the total population of the Polish Republic. Polish Jews formed the largest Jewish community in Europe. In 1945, six years later, no more than 50,000 Jews remained alive in Poland. Almost 98.5% of Polish Jewry (excluding the 300.000 who fled the Germans and survived in the Soviet Union) have perished in the Holocaust. A nation rich in history, with its own traditions and language ceased to exist. On September 1st, 1939, the German forces invaded Poland and – before the end of the month – completed the conquest of the country. The course will focus on the initial German policies directed against the Jews and, at the same time, it shall follow the reactions of the Jewish community in the face of new existential threats. The lectures will shed light on the creation of the ghettos, on the strategy of the Jewish leadership and on the plight of the Jewish masses. The course will explore the growing German terror and the implementation of the “Final Solution of the Jewish Question”- as Germans referred to the policies of mass extermination. The students will become familiar with the planning and the execution of the so-called “Aktion Reinhard”, as well as with the survival strategies pursued later by the Jews who avoided the 1942-43 deportations to the extermination camps. While learning about German perpetrators and Jewish victims, the students will also explore the attitudes of the Polish society and the Polish Catholic Church to the persecuted Jews.
