    Title: Shoot for Safety: A Hepatitis C Awareness Network for Youth in Cairo, Egypt School: Washington University in St. Louis Student Information: Aryan Weisenfeld, student at Washington University in St. Louis (a UWC) and Anant Vinjamoori, student at Stanford University (non UWC), home countries both USA The basic premise of our hepatitis C project in Egypt was to recruit and train a core of 20-30 Egyptian college students to spread the message of hepatitis C awareness to their communities and social circles as “peer educators”. We hoped to then use the mobilization of these youth to create a hepatitis C awareness initiative in the country that would be both refreshing and long-lasting. Our previous experience in working with hepatitis C awareness consisted of 1 year of working with the Missouri/Kansas chapter of the American Liver Foundation to raise awareness of hepatitis C amongst high school students in St. Louis, Missouri. Building on this previous experience, we applied for a $10,000 grant from the Katherine Wasserman Davis foundation, which we were awarded in March. Months before our grant application was submitted, we began developing instructional materials that were used to train youth peer hepatitis C educators as well as the production of the printed informational media that was distributed to our peer educators. We developed a pamphlet which discussed general information about the disease as well as measures that youth can take to avoid contraction and transmission. Our project material was developed by working with our previously developed materials, as well as material supplied to us by Missouri/Kansas Chapter of the American Liver Foundation.

    dance4life ChangeMakers Who we are We, the dance4life ChangeMakers, are a group of young people representing a diversity of youth constituencies in our home countries, whom we consult on a regular basis in order to voice their needs and demands in international decision-making spaces. The youth constituencies we represent vary from youth parliaments to juveniles, from students to sex workers, from young people living in slums to religious youth groups. We, the dance4life ChangeMakers, understand diplomacy and sensitivity, however also embody the boldness and courage of the youth generation demanding their rights to be fulfilled. We are a diverse group of young people ranging from 19 till 27 years of age, and we live in 8 countries spread over three continents. We represent youth voices from Pakistan, Uganda, Zambia, Kenya, Nepal, Ethiopia, Ghana, and The Netherlands. We, the dance4life ChangeMakers, are a completely youth-led group joining forces to advocate for the sexual and reproductive health and rights of young people. We believe that connecting to people’s hearts is necessary to achieve change. Therefore, our advocacy will be characterized by personal stories of positive change and debunking myths around sexual and reproductive health issues. What we stand for We believe not that people are vulnerable, but that they are made vulnerable. Therefore, we will show how young people are agents for change at all levels by bringing their stories to decision-makers. We have the legitimacy to approach decision-makers because we are in touch with the needs of many young people at community level. We demand the right of young people to lead a healthy, joyful, safe and meaningful life to be fulfilled.

    DANCE4LIFE KENYA Key facts about Kenya Kenya is one of the most developed countries in Africa with a population of over 45 million. Adolescents comprise 24 percent of Kenya’s population . One of the biggest issues affecting young people in Kenya is the lack of easy-accessible and accurate information on sexual and reproductive health. This lack of knowledge puts young people at risk of making uninformed decisions about their sexual health and further increases their risk of contracting HIV or other STIs and unplanned pregnancies. • Only 53% of youth aged 15-24 used a condom during the last sexual intercourse , and only 40.2% of sexually active women aged 15-19 are using a contraceptive of some kind • 18% of young women aged 15-19 years have given birth or are pregnant with their first child, and 26 in every 100 girls in Kenya are married before they reach 18 years • Sexual violence among adolescents aged 13-17 years: girls – 10.7%, boys – 4.2% • Over 6% of the Kenyan population is living with HIV. 50% of all new HIV infections in Kenya occur among youth aged 15-24 . Our program The dance4life program in Kenya was Where we work launched in 2008: since then dance4life Kenya has reached out to over 85,000 young people and built a community of over 35,000 agents4change. The program takes places in the regions of Nairobi and Coast (Mombasa, Kwale and Kilifi counties). We offer comprehensive sexuality education to youth both in and out-of-school, to empower them with knowledge and skills that help them make informed choices.

Russia and EU countries, as well as non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have made a lot of efforts to reach out to key groups with their services. However, financial resources for communicable disease prevention programmes are extremely scarce. Governments do not always have sufficient monetary and non-monetary resources to provide comprehensive assistance to key populations. Though, the financial support from international donors in the Eastern Europe and Central Asia region, including Russia, is constantly shrinking. Today, for many Russian NGOs working in this field, the question is where to find the means to implement their daily activities such as project implementation, staff salaries, expert fees, rent and utility payments. The lack of funding for the most pressing issues eventually forces NGOs to withdraw. As a result, the people for whom the NGOs were the sole pillar remain without support. Taking the above mentioned into account, it is crucial to explore alternative methods of fundraising.

These are often the most affected by poverty and vulnerability. It is estimated that 110,000 people in Argentina are living with HIV and 30% of those do not know their serological status. Among adolescent men, between 15 and 19 years old, there has been an increase in the rate of HIV infection during the last five years. The epidemic in our country is concentrated in urban centers, such as Buenos Aires, where two-thirds of people with HIV live. On the other hand, 16% of all births in the country are to adolescent mothers, although in the poorer provinces, this percentage is as high as 25%. Since 2010, Fundacion Huesped (FH) in partnership with the Youth for Health Network (YHN) has coordinated the implementation of the dance4life program in about 20 public schools per year in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Area.
