’S INSIGHTS JUNE 2011

While driving out to Salem Home the other day I noticed a small windsock blowing on the hill overlooking the June and Paul Scott farm. I‘m told there is a small landing strip on that hill that Paul used at one time. I‘ve also been told about some of Paul‘s exploits, including using his personal plane and a high powered rifle to shoot coyotes while flying! Of course this was in the days when Shelby County was a little less sophisticated and coyotes a much bigger problem. Or maybe Paul just enjoyed the challenge! June and Paul were both colorful characters. Visits with June at the nautically themed house that Paul built for her, and then later on at Elm Crest, were always entertaining. But June also had a serious side. June knew that God‘s material blessings to her simply meant she had a re- sponsibility to be a good steward of those blessings for the future, including after her death. Immanuel Lutheran, our sister congregation Bethlehem Lutheran, along with Elm Crest and Sa- lem Homes, have been recently blessed by June‘s foresight and planning. We have received a bequest of $135,210 from June‘s estate. While June‘s gift comes to us undesignated, our own Bylaws and Continuing Resolution spells out that this gift cannot be used for General Fund pur- poses. So before you throw away your envelope packet or cancel your automatic withdrawal, we wanted to let you know the process we must follow to decide, as a congregation, on the use of this gift. On May 11th the Executive Committee met with Richard Schenck, who is the chair of the Trust and Memorial Committee. This group put together a list of names that will serve as an Ad Hoc Committee. The task of this committee is to guide the entire congregation on making a deci- sion for the use of this gift. This committee needs to be appointed by the full Church Council which will be meeting on June 21st. Following the approval and formation of the committee, we anticipate holding at least one forum for input and suggestions from our members before bringing the findings of the committee be- fore a special congregational assembly for a vote. The two stipulations that we have agreed upon as a congregation as part of the Continuing Resolution is that some of the gift remain within the Trust and Memorial Fund, and that gifts of this size will not be used for General Fund expenses– salaries, Sunday school curriculum, utilities and so forth. Other uses for the money include capital improvements, new minis- tries or mission opportunities, or simply allowing it to remain within our long term endowments (congregational endowment and mission endowment). In the meantime we are headed into the summer slump time of our church of- ferings. While giving has remained fairly equal to last years, expenses have risen (as they tend to do). This will make the next few months a challenging time here at Immanuel. While God has richly blessed us corporately as a church body through the gift of one of his sainted servants, he continues to challenge us individually to give our first fruits and offerings for the ongoing ministry of His Church, Immanuel Lutheran. They should arrive in Kidugala in the evening Monday, July 11. They will be gone for 19 days. Continue to keep them in your prayers as they prepare to travel. Pray that their hearts and minds remain open to where ever the Holy Spirit leads them on this trip. Pray also, that they remain healthy prior to travel and during their travels.

Baby Layettes: We will be putting together approximately 25 layettes for the team to take to Kidugala. We will do it assembly-line fashion, visit and share some refreshments. Join us Wednesday, June 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the church in the multi-purpose room. A big ―thank you‖ to the Bunko Ladies that provided ―Onesies‖ and many thanks to Julie Vorm who patiently sewed all the layette jackets and receiving blankets.

Kidugala Ambassadors: Pastor Wallace Lupenza and Beatrice Samwel Kingililwe will be arriv- ing to Harlan with the TZ Team on Wednesday, July 27 at 4:30 p.m. There will be a group travel- ing to Omaha to welcome them at the airport. More information as the time is more near. They will be here until August 11. A poster and schedule of activities with the ambassadors will be posted the end of June. To give everyone a chance to meet them, there will be two ―Meet & Greet‖ their first weekend here: Saturday, July 30 with light refreshments after Saturday night service and Sunday, July 31, fruit, rolls and coffee after Sunday morning service. Rick and Cheryl Chipman will be hosting for their living accommodations and will make sure they get to all activi- ties. First and foremost, they are here to cement and build friendships. They also are interested in local health & education systems, agriculture practices, the services and school for the blind. They will make sure they get to their activities. If you have any ideas for activities to host, please contact Peg Haas or Deb Schechinger.

Other News in Kidugala: Recently Kidugala hosted the Southern Tanzania Assembly. The long -time Assistant Bishop, Rev Isaya Mengele was elected as the new Bishop for the Southern TZ Diocese. The new Assistant Bishop was raised in Kidugala and has been an educator in Morogoro with Pr Isaac Chengula, who many of you have met years ago.

Crops are doing well in Kidugala this year. They are starting to harvest beans but not the maize (corn) yet. The test plot is doing very well.

Prayer Requests: Stephen Lihweuli-retired Evangelist from Ihanjutwa Preaching Point, has re- cently been diagnosed with cancer. Please keep him in your prayers

Jason Mtokoma only has 3 semesters to complete before he returns to take charge of the Kidugala Health Center. However, he recently got a bacterial infection in one of his eyes due to an injury sustained to that eye last year. This created an ulcer on the cornea. He recently had a drastic procedure to sew the eyelid shut to enhance healing; this has interfered with his studies & work. Please keep him & his family in your prayers

Remember to pray for the safety of all those working in the fields: For our farmers here in Shelby County while they plant and those in Kidugala while they are harvesting. Volume 3, Issue 6 Page 5

IMMANUEL’S MISSION MINDSET

Did you know that in 2010, members of Immanuel contributed over $40,000 to various mission projects? Here are the highlights:

General Fund Offerings $2,400 – LCMC for administration and church start ups $2,400 – Salem Lutheran Home $3,600 – Tanzania Mission Projects $1,000 – West Central Development $1,200 – Riverside Bible Camp $1,800 – Shelby County Ministerial Benevolence $552 - Compassion International - Miriam

Women of Immanuel (ILCW) $1,500 – Salem Lutheran Home $1,500 – Riverside Bible Camp $50—Heartland District Women of the Word

In addition, the ILCW provided $1200 in camper scholarships to assist our families in sending their kids to Riverside Bible Camp. Our women also contributed to fundraisers sponsored by other agencies for people in our community.

Sunday School Offering $1,184 — Compassion International – Cassandra & Tee

Sunday School students and JAM participants continue to seek ways they can become actively involved helping local needy families and partner with local agencies, including the annual Christmas shopping for area families.

Tanzania Committee Fund Raisers $13,255 – Tanzania Mission Projects including… $1,024 for $4,072 for the Kidugala Women‘s Center $2,271 agricultural projects

The focus in 2010 was primarily planning for another short term mission trip to Kidugala, in 2011. Trip travel and expenses are paid primarily out of pocket by participants. A scholarship fund has been established to defray costs for some members. We look for- ward to inviting two ―ambassadors‖ from Kidugala who will be returning with our short term missionaries after their time in Tanzania. Volume 3, Issue 6 Page 7

Total Giving towards Tanzania which includes General Fund Offering, Trust Donations and Fund Raisers was over $19,000.

LYO 2011 Servant Evant/Pictured Rocks $3,175 This past summers trip included replacing a needed walking bridge at this beautiful Christian camp in Eastern Iowa. LYO youth are active throughout the year with servant projects for the church, for our own members, and in the community.

Shelby County Food Bank Christmas Project During Christmas, with the encouragement by the Women of Immanuel, Immanuel ac- cepted the challenge to adopt a number of families through the annual food, clothing and gift drive. The generosity of our members was overwhelming! Not only were we able to provide for our adopted families, we also provided food certificates for many other fami- lies as well.

IMMANUEL’S MISSION PHILOSOPHY

1. Whenever possible, our participation in mission and benevolence should be hands on, pro- viding funds to agencies that we can participate with, take ownership in, and be involved in how the money is spent. Partnerships with Salem Lutheran Homes, Riverside Bible Camp, Tanzania Missions and West Central Development involve not just sending money, but sending our time and talent through our own members‘ involvement.

2. Acts 2:8 encourages us to view our mission field as local, state, national and international. Before ascending into heaven, Jesus told his disciples (you and me): ―But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in , and in all Judea and , and to the ends of the earth.‖

3. Priority is given to mission fields and partnerships that clearly proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ. As a Christian congregation that strives to be Christ Centered, Bible Based, Family Fo- cused and Mission Minded, we also strive to develop partnerships where these same values are upheld. The goal of mission work at Immanuel is clear – that Jesus Christ be proclaimed and glorified!

I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus. —Philippians 1:3-6 (NIV)
