Part 1 – Church Becomes Powerful Institution Evidence of Rome’s power grab • In 2nd century we see bishops over regions; people looked to them for guidance. • Around 195AD there was dispute over which day to celebrate Passover (14th Nissan vs. Sunday) • Polycarp said 14th Nissan, but now Victor (Bishop of Rome) liked Sunday. • A council was convened to decide, and they decided on Sunday. • But bishops of Asia continued the Passover on 14th Nissan. • Eusebius wrote what happened next: “Thereupon Victor, who presided over the church at Rome, immediately attempted to cut off from the common unity the parishes of all Asia, with the churches that agreed with them, as heterodox [heretics]; and he wrote letters and declared all the brethren there wholly excommunicate.” (Eus., Hist. eccl. 5.24.9) Everyone started looking to Rome to settle disputes • Rome was always ending up on the winning side in their handling of controversial topics. 1 • So through a combination of the fact that Rome was the most important city in the ancient world and its bishop was always right doctrinally then everyone started looking to Rome. • So Rome took that power and developed it into the Roman Catholic Church by the 600s. Church granted power to rule • Constantine gave the pope power to rule over Italy, Jerusalem, Constantinople and Alexandria. -

NEW AMERICAN BIBLE (NAB) Catholic. A translation from the original languages by a group of Roman Catholic scholars done in the 1970s and revised in the 1980s. Also includes helpful reading notes. A good study Bible. NEW AMERICAN STANDARD BIBLE (NASB or NASV) In 1901 the American Standard Version was produced by American Protestants who reworked the Revised Version (not the RSV), which was a revision of the KJV done by British Scholars on the basis of available manuscipts. It used readings preferred by the Americans and with "American" English and weights and measures. In 1963/71 a conservative revision of this became the NASB. They used the most up to date critical editions of the biblical texts and attempted to be as literal as possible in terms of translation and sentence structure. A good Bible for close textual study. CONTEMPORARY ENGLISH BIBLE (CEV) A rendering of the intent of the Hebrew and Greek text published in 1995 by the American Bible Society. It uses inclusive gender language and is sensitive to concerns over Jewish sensitivities. There is some controversy over this version's claim to contain no anti-Judaism since there are biblical texts which seem, in the original, to express such sentiments. The interpretive translation strategy eliminates these and sometimes masks the language of the original writer. Although this is done to help modern readers avoid drawing wrong inferences about Judaism, this version is sometimes less of a translation and more of a commentary. A readable version but should be used with caution and checked against other versions. -

Versions and Translations The following outlines some of the key characteristics of several Bibles currently in use. A number of the Bible translations most popular in the Western world today can be found in searchable form online (see: http://www.ntgateway.com/bible-translations/). The King James Version (KJV) The translation was planned from 1604 and published in 1611 under the auspices of King James VI of England. This Bible has become one of the most influential English books in modern Western civilization. It served as a unifier of English politics and religious disagreements. The King James Bible uses an economy of words and voices beautiful cadences that have led many to call it elegant. It remains a favorite in many Protestant circles. The Douay-Rheims Bible The first English translation for Roman Catholics was produced in Douay and Rheims in France from 1582-1610. It is based not upon the Hebrew and Greek text but rather the Vulgate, the Latin translation that was the authoritative Bible for the Catholic Church for much of its history. Its close adherence to the Latin makes many passages difficult for contemporary readers to understand, and it has largely fallen into disuse in many Catholic quarters. It is sometimes called the Rheims-Douay Bible. The American Standard Version (ASV) The growing sense that the KJV was based on less-than-ideal manuscripts and philological knowledge led to the British Revised Version in 1885. An American edition, the ASV, came out in 1901 and represented several hundred further emendations to suit its American audience. The ASV is sometimes thought of as by students of biblical languages as a particularly “wooden” translation, and it does in some respects seek to replicate the feel of the original, for example in using “Jehovah” rather than “Lord,” or “Sheol” rather than “grave/Hell.” However, the ASV is also quite euphemistic in places. -

There was no friction between perceiving the form or structure of the text and perceiving the meaning of the text. The Origins of the Bible in English John Samaha How did the Bible come to us in English? The Old Testament writings were inscribed in Hebrew and other ancient languages. We know that the Good News was passed on by word of mouth immediately after the death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ. Only decades later was the oral tradition put into written form, primarily in Greek. By the fifth century st. Jerome had translated the Bible into Latin. This was called the Latin Vulgate. In these pre-medieval times all writings were copied by hand. The whole of the Holy Bible did not appear in English until the middle of the second millennium. It was a slow and troubled accomplishment. The production of the Bible emerged from a complicated past filled with intrigue and controversy, persecution and martyrdom. What happened? At best, translation is a difficult and tricky task. An Italian adage says the translator is a traitor. In those early times it was a matter of life and death embroiled in historical, cultural, political, and religious clashes. But from that turmoil in those tumultuous times by dint of persevering and dedicated scholars the first English translations sa~ light of day. Briefly, this is what happened. Christianity arrived on the shores of England in the seventh century in the person of St. Augustine of Canterbury and the missionary efforts that followed. Already at that time Caedmon, an illiterate herdsman, sang the Good News in Anglo-Saxon poetry. In the next century other preachers continued to provide biblical translations of sorts. -

Overview of English Bible translations Amplified Bible The Amplified Bible showed the verbal equivalence and amplification of word meanings in the text. It started in 1965 and is revised in 1987. Mostly used in charismatic circles, because of the lack of greek and Hebrew teachings from the pastors. Common English Bible (CEB) The Common English Bible is not simply a revision or update of an existing translation. It is a bold new translation designed to meet the needs of Christians as they work to build a strong and meaningful relationship with God through Jesus Christ. A key goal of the translation team was to make the Bible accessible to a broad range of people; it’s written at a comfortable level for over half of all English readers. As the translators did their work, reading specialists working with seventy-seven reading groups from more than a dozen denominations review the texts to ensure a smooth and natural reading experience. Easy readability can enhance church worship and participation, and personal Bible study. It also encourages children and youth to discover the Bible for themselves, perhaps for the very first time. INQUISITION: INTRODUCTION by David Burr When medieval people used the word "inquisition," they were referring to a judicial technique, not an organization. There was , in fact, no such thing as "the Inquisition" in the sense of an impersonal organization with a chain of command. Instead there were "inquisitors of heretical depravity," individuals assigned by the pope to inquire into heresy in specific areas. They were called such because they applied a judicial technique known as inquisitio, which could be translated as "inquiry" or "inquest." In this process, which was already widely used by secular rulers (Henry II used it extensively in England in the twelfth century), an official inquirer called for information on a specific subject from anyone who felt he or she had something to offer. This information was treated as confidential. The inquirer, aided by competent consultants, then weighed the evidence and determined whether there was reason for action. This procedure stood in stark contrast to the Roman law practice normally used in ecclesiastical courts, in which, unless the judge could proceed on clear, personal knowledge that the defendant was guilty, judicial process had to be based on an accusation by a third party who was punishable if the accusation was not proved, and in which the defendant could confront witnesses. By the end of the thirteenth century most areas of continental Europe had been assigned inquisitors. The overwhelming majority were Franciscans or Dominicans, since members of these two orders were seen as pious, educated and highly mobile. Inquisitors worked in cooperation with the local bishops. Sentence was often passed in the name of both . -

In the 2010-2013 Triennium, the Faith, Worship, and Ministry Committee undertook a study of a the new translation of the Bible published as the Common English Bible, which they then commended for use in personal devotion and study. During the course of this work, it became apparent that it is not well known that there is a list of Bible versions which are authorized for use in public worship in the Anglican Church of Canada. The English translations so authorized are: New Revised Standard Version Revised English Bible King James (Authorized Version) 1611 Revised Standard Version 1952 (and its revision as Common Bible) New American Bible 1970 Today's English Version (Good News) 1976 New International Version 1978 New Jerusalem 1985 The most used French translation of the Bible is the Traduction oecuménique de la bible, or TOB. The recent translation of the Bible into Inuktitut is cause for celebration across the whole church. Many other language translations are in use across the country. The following article is a reflection on the Bible as a 'translation' book, with particular attention to the English translations that have been authorized for use for public worship in the Anglican Church of Canada, and is offered for reflection. Questions about the Bible What's the difference between a "Catholic Bible" and a "Protestant Bible"? Catholic and Protestant Bibles both include 27 books in the New Testament. Protestant Bibles have only 39 books in the Old Testament while Catholic Bibles have 46. The 7 books included in Catholic Bibles are Tobit, Judith, 1 and 2 Maccabees, Wisdom, Sirach, and Baruch. Catholic Bibles also include sections in the Books of Esther and Daniel which are not found in Protestant Bibles. These books are called the deuterocanonical books. The Catholic Church considers these books to be inspired by the Holy Spirit. What's the difference between a Bible and a Lectionary? Lectionary is composed of the readings and the responsorial psalm assigned for each Mass of the year (Sundays, weekdays, and special occasions). The readings are divided by the day or the theme (baptism, marriage, vocations, etc.) rather than according to the books of the Bible. Introductions and conclusions have been added to each reading. Not all of the Bible is included in the Lectionary. How can anyone own the copyright on the Bible? Isn't it free to everyone? No one owns the copyright on the Bible itself. Rather, the copyright is held on particular translations or editions of the Bible. The Confraternity of Christian Doctrine (CCD) owns the copyright on the New American Bible translation. Some versions of the Bible, such as the King James Version (not the New King James Version) are in the public domain. The copyright allows the owner to protect the integrity of the text so that individuals may not introduce changes without permission.
