Can the twinkling of little antennae be too far in the future? Back on Earth, Diet Smith introduces the Two-Way Wrist Television fifty years before the Apple Watch, while Moon Maid turns vigilante and a series of events reveal a mob plot to kill both her and Dick Tracy. The clues eventually lead to Mr. Bribery, who proudly displays his collection of shrunken heads of the people who have crossed him. Volume 22 includes the complete comic strips from April 13, 1964 through December 26, 1965. After hearing so many people complain about the moon era in Dick Tracy, I almost didnt get volume 21, and this volume; #22. I am glad that I got this book and judged for myself. I think the Moon maid is a brilliant and enchanting addition to Dick Tracy. I just dont really get all the complaints; I mean crime and action is really never very far away, and often interlaced with the Moon Maid story, with the Moon Maid herself having many crime-fighting tricks up her sleeves.

No sense writing a party-con report — we ate, drank, partied, swam, danced, auctioned, gossiped and had a good time.

  • "Command Performance"
“Command Performance” (Episode No. 21)—Bob Hope, Master of Ceremonies (July 7, 1942) Added to the National Registry: 2005 Essay by Cary O’Dell Bob Hope Soldiers line up for a “Command Performance” performance Radio’s unique “Command Performance” series was the brainchild of producer Louis G. Cowan. Cowan had joined the radio division of the US War Department just prior to the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor. With the commencement of the war though, Cowan found his job suddenly changed: rather than producing shows for civilians, he now found himself charged with creating programs for thousands of new servicemen stationed all around the globe. So he happened upon an idea. Many new members of the armed forces were no doubt having to quickly and awkwardly adjust to their new regimented military existence, to the myriad of commands and orders they now had to obey. What would happen if, instead of taking commands, they were allowed to give them, at least in terms of entertainment? Similar in nature to TV’s later “You Asked For It!,” Cowan’s “Command Performance” would solicit requests from servicemen the world over and ask them what they wanted to hear over the air. Cowan and his radio staff would then do their best to make it happen for them. From the beginning, to show their support for the troops, performers of all types (recruited via letters and ads in “Variety”) were generous with their time and talents. And both CBS and NBC donated their studios and recording facilities to the production. Even the major unions and show business guilds relaxed their rules in order to do these shows for the war effort (with the caveat that the shows be heard only by military personnel).

  • Has Portrayal of Disabled People in the Media
BROADSHEET : MOVING IMAGE PORTRAYAL OF DISABILITY: THEN AND NOW! Has portrayal of disabled people in the media improved in recent years? There are more story lines about disabled characters with more subtlety and less stereotyping in television and film. Television-Carrie Mathieson (bi-polar)in Homeland played by Claire Danes; Tony Soprano (James Gandolfini ) keeps his mental health anxiety issues going through 7 series of the Sopranos; Monk, the detective with OCPD, brings his unique thinking to solve crimes, Doc Martin, played by Martin Clunes, with OCD has proved very popular, as the audience engage with his difficulty in navigating the world. There has been a welcome casting of disabled actors to play disabled characters in soaps, and long running dramas. This builds on the pioneering retaining of Roger Tonge as Sandy Richardson when he developed Hodgkin’s used crutches and a wheelchair in Crossroads ( ATV 1964-1981) and Julie Fernandez (wheelchair user) in Eldorado (BBC 1981-82); Adam Best in the BBC’s Eastenders (David Proud 2009-2010) followed by Donna Yates (Lisa Hammond) of short stature and wheelchair user, 2014 onwards. Kitty Mc Geever (blind) played Lizzie Lakely in Emmerdale (ITV from 2009-2013). In Hollyoaks Kelly Marie Stewart (wheelchair user) played Haley Ramsey. More recently, wheelchair using Cherylee Houston plays Izzy Anstey in Coronation Street. Liz Carr plays Clarrisa Mullery in Silent Witness. American long running series have cast more disabled actors portraying disabled parts, Paula Sage (learning difficulties) plays Roberta Brogan in Afterlife; Peter Drinklage ( restricted growth) plays Tyrone in Game of Thrones; R J Mitte (cerebral palsy) plays Walt Junior in Breaking Bad.
