Important Dates 10Th June: Year 10 Work Principal’s Message Important Dates Well done to the staff and students who 10th June: Year 10 Work Experience Begins have completed their Duke of Edinburgh 17th June: Year 7-9 Exams Commence award this year. Last weekend saw completion of the final bronze expedition 17th June: Year 12 Exams Commence after successful completion of the silver 17th June: Year 11 Leavers Breakfast expedition earlier this term. This is a 20th June: Year 11 Prom fantastic achievement for students and they 25th June: Transition Evening should be proud of their accomplishment. Year 11 and Year 13 Exams: This week saw Year 11 students sitting their final GCSE examinations and Year 13 are almost there as they will finish next Wednesday. We would like to say well done to all students for the mature and calm attitude with which they have approached the exams. Students have arrived well equipped and punctual to all exams and their behaviour before, during and after the exams has been excellent. This has meant students have felt calm and prepared heading into all exams which gives them the best chance of success. We look forward to seeing how all their hard work pays off in August. Year 11 Leavers Information: On Monday 17th June, we will hold our leavers breakfast for Year 11 students. This is a wonderful morning where students get to say goodbye to their friends and teachers in the school setting. It involves shirt signing, a breakfast and final year group assembly. We would ask parents of Year 11 students to remind them that normal school uniform is expected on Monday and those who choose not to follow this may find they are unable to attend the morning. Also this morning is a great opportunity for students to return any outstanding text books or equipment, Oscar trophies, locker keys etc. It is much easier to return these before leaving rather than having to make a trip back to school at a later date. Calendar Change: As you may have seen in the national news, the government announced the bank holiday, set for Monday 4 May 2020, has been switched to Friday 8 May 2020, to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day. This date change has now been made on the school website and will be correct on all future term dates sent out to parents. Please ignore any previous term date documents. Work Experience: This week has seen Year 10 students taking part in a wide variety of work experience placements. These continue next week so students get a full experience of the world of work. Staff have been visiting students this week to find out how they are finding the placements. Feedback has been overwhelmingly positive with many employers asking if they can keep students on in the future. We are very proud of the work Year 10 are carrying out in the local area. Fire Cadets: Next Wednesday, students who are part of the Fire Cadets will take part in their passing out parade. This is a final demonstration of the skills they have learned as part of the Fire Cadets. Year 8 students will be asked to come and watch the parade as well the presentation. They will be told about how they can join fire cadets and the sign up process involved. If you would like your child to get involved in this fantastic opportunity, encourage them to ask questions on Wednesday to the staff available. Year 7-9 Exams: Exams for these year groups commence on Monday with Year 7 science and Year 9 option A subjects. Please ensure your child has checked their exam timetable and is fully equipped for their exams. If you have lost your timetable, there is a copy available on the school website in the news section. Year 9 Blencathra trip (Geography GCSE): On the 11th and 12th July Year 9 students will be participating in their first GCSE fieldtrip to conduct a river study. We are visiting Blencathra in the Lake District and will spend one full day on the river carrying out a range of techniques that the students need to know to complete paper 3. Letters and medical forms have been sent out. Medical forms are due by the 21st of June (an up to date form is required to take them on this form of trip), and payments are due on the 1st July. The fieldwork will be examined and students who do not attend will be at a major disadvantage as it will affect their overall GCSE grade. Therefore if there are any concerns or issues regarding attendance on this trip please contact Miss Leck at [email protected] as soon as possible so we can discuss any problems arising. World Meat Free Week: Following Mr. Garburtt's introduction of the upcoming Meat Free Week in assembly, the pupils of 9N took part in a live debate with PETA's animal rights protestor Lydia Smyth. The students got to ask Miss. Smyth challenging questions about the impending impact global warming will have on our world and what they can do to make a difference. The form group took the opportunity to ask important questions which will encourage their participation in Meat Free Week. Miss. Smyth was extremely pleased with the maturity of the form and their questions. Well done. Introduction of universal HPV immunisation programme: In the UK, we have amongst the highest HPV vaccination coverage rates in the world and this is largely achieved because it is a school-based programme, with excellent support provided by schools to enable the NHS immunisation teams to vaccinate school age children. Our young people and adult population are well protected against serious diseases as a result. From 1st September 2019, the HPV vaccine program will be extended to include boys, in addition to girls, as part of the routine school-based schedule in England. Bay Learning Trust Social Media: As you will be aware Carnforth High School is now part of the Bay Learning Trust. In order to help keep parents and students up to date with what is happening across the Trust, there are two new social media accounts to follow. If you are on Twitter then you can follow @BayLearnTrust and if you are on Facebook you can like @TheBayLearningTrust . Also if you haven’t already we do have a school Twitter and Facebook account. They can be found at @carnforthhigh of Twitter and liking Carnforth High School on Facebook. We are hoping to provide some of the newsletter information through these accounts in the future. Oscars 2019: We are approaching that time of the year where we host the Oscars at Carnforth High School to celebrate students effort and achievement in all their subjects. Can we please ask that all Oscar trophies awarded last year are returned to the school after half term. If there are any issues with returning the trophy please contact Mr Bullock ([email protected]) so that arrangements can be put in place where needed. Governor Positions: The governing body are looking to appoint new members for academic year 2019-20. This is a great way to contribute to the future of Carnforth High School. If you are interested please contact Mrs Edmondson for more details. [email protected] Free creative workshops for local teenagers to help launch new charity: Local 11-18’s are being offered the chance to get creative and make new friends next month in a series of hands-on free workshops covering everything from hairstyling, make-up and fashion up-cycling to street magic, guerrilla poster art and broadcasting with the BBC. The 23 workshops, run by professionals in city venues, will be filmed to create an advert for the launch of Escape2Make (E2M), a newly forming charity which aims to give teenagers in the Lancaster and Morecambe district a safe place to make things, make friends and make a difference. Escape2Make surveyed 200 teenagers in four local schools and most said they were bored and wanted something to do - 83% wanted to make new friends and 79% want somewhere safe to be outside school. Artist, producer and businesswoman, Jenny Natusch, founder of E2M, said: “There are approximately 12,500 11-18’s in Lancaster & Morecambe Districts but very few creative and social activities outside school and college, and not much creative stuff in the curriculum itself. Sporty kids are relatively well catered for and if you’re musical you can go to the brilliant More Music, but anything else to do with making – e.g. art, films, food, make-up, engineering - isn’t available for this age group. “Even a brief amount of time spent on a creative pastime has powerful benefits for personal wellbeing, according to new research commissioned by BBC Arts, and gives young people a chance to meet like minded peers. It’s very important to us that our activities are always are free so that everyone can benefit: we’re asking that anyone who attends this time is happy to be filmed so we can make an advert to attract young people to the charity and raise funds for lots more workshops.” The workshops are being run over 3 weekends from 29th June (with one starting a week earlier). Some are one-off for just a few hours, others last all day, or are running over all weekends. Kyle Mckenzie, a Lancaster University student and one of the organisers of the workshop series: said: “It’s a fantastic opportunity for teenagers to gain experience in something they wouldn’t have a chance to do ordinarily.

On Wednesday, the Year 12 group attended a session on healthy relationships and issues of consent. It was full of useful information on how to stay safe and how to know the signs of healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships. Even though rather quiet at times, they got lots out of the session. Thursday of this week brings us to our Sixth Form Parents Evening. An extremely useful time for parents to discuss with teachers the progress of their son/daughter and to find out where gaps in their learning are and what learning strategies can be put in place before the next round

Distance The 'straight line' method of measurement only applies for admission purposes. For transport 'walking routes' are used to determine distance. Explanations of these terms can be found in the main booklet. Parents/Family Members A parent is any person who has parental responsibility or care of the child. Where admission arrangements refer to 'parent's attendance at church' it is sufficient for just one parent to attend. 'Family members' include only parents and siblings. Medical/Social/Welfare Where schools have a medical/social/welfare admission criterion then this should take into account the circumstances of the child and the family. Please note the Local Authority information in the main admissions booklet. Looked After and Previously Looked After Children The School Admissions Code [December 2014] states that within the oversubscription criteria, the highest priority must be given to looked after children and children who were looked after, but ceased to be so because they were adopted (or became subject to a residence order or special guardianship order). A 'looked after child' ( 1 ) or a child who was previously looked after but immediately after being looked after became subject to an adoption( 2 ) child arrangements order (residency order) ( 3 ) or special guardianship order ( 4) .

This should help to support any decisions they are making about their futures and what each institution is able to provide. Due to the Covid-19 situation, school sixth forms and colleges are not able to offer things like open days, campus tours and taster days and this may have felt like there is less support available to help young people deciding on their next steps.
