Sixth Form News: After a relaxed half term break, students have returned to their studies well rested. On Tuesday, the Year 12 students attended Ripley St Thomas School for the Safe Drive Stay Alive presentation. It was hard hitting and everyone learned some invaluable lessons about how to stay safe. On Wednesday, the Year 12 group attended a session on healthy relationships and issues of consent. It was full of useful information on how to stay safe and how to know the signs of healthy, unhealthy and abusive relationships. Even though rather quiet at times, they got lots out of the session. Thursday of this week brings us to our Parents Evening. An extremely useful time for parents to discuss with teachers the progress of their son/daughter and to find out where gaps in their learning are and what learning strategies can be put in place before the next round of mocks and for the Year 13s, their final exams which are approaching us very quickly! Next week, we are travelling to Manchester Central for the Annual UCAS Exhibition where students can find out more regarding future prospects and careers! We also have the second group of students completing their Heart Start First Aid training which will earn them a certificate! In the next few weeks, we have several speakers coming into school to talk to students about personal statements, interviews and other topics that will help students in the future when applying for jobs, apprenticeships or universities. The letter that was sent out to parents and students regarding the consultation process and the proposal of closing the Sixth Form has also been attached to this issue of the newsletter.

Confidence Purpose Respect Youth Speaks Final: On Saturday 8th February, our Senior and Intermediate Youth Speaks teams made the journey to Windermere School to compete in the District Finals of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition. The intermediate team of Chairperson Isabelle Miller (Year 7), Speaker Sophie Casson (Year 8) and Year 8 Proposer of the Vote Thanks, Emily Taylor (Year 8) spoke on the topic of animal abuse for entertainment. They were responsible for an incredible display of public speaking and must all be praised highly, as a team all new to the competition this year, they performed impressively amongst competition of a very high standard. A special mention to Sophie Casson who received the prize for the best Speaker at the competition. In the afternoon our Senior team consisting of Chairperson Abi Atkin (Year 12), Speaker Harlie Bowerbank (Year 11) and Proposer of the Vote of Thanks Zak Wilding (Year 11) took on others from the local area posing the question everyone has been pondering, ‘Why are there no baby Garys?’. They did very well against some very strong competition despite being interrupted by a barking dog! A final thank you to Annie Branson (Year 11) and Lily Bliss (Year 12), their support on the day and fantastic writing skills really boosted the senior team.

Whilst neither team will be progressing to the national final, they both performed phenomenally against some tough competition and represented the school exceptionally. It has been a delight working with them, and I look forward to seeing what they go on to do in the future!

Coronavirus: DfE Advice for Schools, Parents & Carers: We have published the latest advice to from the DfE regarding the Coronavirus on our school website. A copy of the questionnaire will be available in the school reception from the middle of thisweek. The school receive no personal data from the questionnaire. PE News: The girls under 13 indoor cricket team played against The Bay Leadership on Tuesday afternoon in the district qualifier for the regional indoor cricket competition which will take place later in the year. The girls, who have been training as a team every week for over 2 months, produced an excellent dominating performance with both bat and ball as well as in the field. The Bay batted first and scored 27 runs for their wickets, in response Carnforth scored 77 runs to win the game. Well done girls. This week’s football fixtures were against Our Ladys with years 7, 8, 9 and 10 all set to play. Due to the extremely wet weather the year 10 game was postponed on Monday. Years 7 and 9 hosted Our Ladys on Wednesday afternoon and it was two good victories for the Carnforth teams. The year 7s won 2-1 in a close game. Kai Travis scored the opening goal with a long-range effort. Our Ladys equalised in the second half but a well Ryan Wallworth goal won the game for Carnforth. A notable mention to Kelby Potter who made a series of good saves making his debut in goal for the school. The year 9 boys eased to victory with a 10-1 win. The goal scorers were Jack Norris (3), Sam Lancaster (2), Bailey Bates (3), Oli Patterson and Charlie Ash who scored the pick of the goals with a right footed half volley from the edge of the area which screamed in to the top corner. The year 8 boys travelled to Our Ladys on Thursday afternoon. The game was very close and neither side could break the deadlock in the first half, with Alfie Rider making a number of excellent saves in goal for Carnforth. Our Ladys took the lead in the second half but Jake Cross leveled the game with a well taken finish at the back post after a dipping free kick from Jack Finnigan. Carnforth then looked the better team and piled on the pressure however a swift counter attack from Our Ladys with8 minutes left on the clock won the game for the home side.

Often we find that the months of January and February are the coldest, therefore pupils are advised to wear skins underneath their PE kit. As well as this pupil’s are advised to wear their school PE tracksuit top. These are available to buy from the school uniform shop. Pupils will not be allowed to wear their coats. Further to this, there has been an increased number of pupils misplacing PE kit this term. Often these kits do not have pupils’ names on them, therefore this makes it incredibly difficult to find the missing kits. Please make sure that all PE kits have their name written on them, there is a space on the label for this. As always, it is expected that all pupils attend all PE lessons in full PE kit, including PE socks, with appropriate footwear (trainers or boots). Pupils who fail to do so will receive a lunch time detention.

The PE department will be posting regular updates, news, fixtures and results on the schools official Twitter (@carnforthhigh) and Facebook page. This will be the easiest way to follow what is going on at CHS PE. Please give these pages a follow and a like to stay in touch with what is happening in the PE department.
