V Sobotce, dne 28. června 2017 Mgr. Jan Zumr 2 Abstrakt Disertační práce se zabývá zkoumáním role, jakou sehrála SS, resp. Allgemeine- SS, v Dolních Rakousích a v Říšské župě Dolní Podunají od svého vzniku na počátku třicátých let až po konec druhé světové války. Cílem je zanalyzování její činnosti, struktury a personálního obsazení. Její historie vykazovala řadu shodných rysů s dějinami SS v ostatních rakouských spolkových zemích i v samotném Německu, zároveň se zde ale objevovala místní specifika. V Dolních Rakousích/Dolním Podunají měla SS, v závislosti na konkrétním roce, druhý nejvyšší nebo vůbec nejvyšší počet příslušníků v celém Rakousku. Při přepočtu na obyvatele tomu ale bylo přesně naopak. Při srovnání se situací ve „staré říši“ vykazovala taktéž podprůměrné počty esesmanů. Tento fakt spočíval v geografickém charakteru a sociální sktruktuře obyvatel země, jehož převážně katolicky konzervativní obyvatelstvo žijící na nížinatém venkově vykazovala vyšší rezistenci vůči vstupu do SS než evangelíci či katolíci žijící v horách. Specifická byla situace na jižní Moravě a jihovýchodním cípu Čech, připojených k Dolnímu Podunají v říjnu 1938. Zde, stejně jako v celém bývalém československém pohraničí, byl počet příslušníků Allgemeine-SS v přepočtu na obyvatele třikrát větší, než kolik činil průměr.

    ABSTRACT Title of dissertation: THE SHADOW OF THE HABSBURGS: MEMORY AND NATIONAL IDENTITY IN AUSTRIAN POLITICS AND EDUCATION, 1918-1955 Douglas Patrick Campbell, Doctor of Philosophy Dissertation directed by: Marsha L. Rozenblit Department of History This dissertation examines how the people of Austria portrayed their past as part of the centuries -old, multinational Habsburg Monarchy in order to conduct a public debate about what it meant to be an “Austrian” during a tumultuous era in Europe’s history. As its main sources, It draws upon the public writings of Austrian politicians and intellectuals, as well as on educational laws, curricula and history textbooks used by the different Austrian go vernments of the era in order to describe how Austrian leaders portrayed Austria’s past in an attempt to define its national future, even as Austrian schools tried to disseminate those national and historical ideals to the next generation of Austrian citiz ens in a practical sense. The first section describes how the leaders of the Austrian First Republic saw Austria’s newfound independence after 1918 as a clean break with its Habsburg past, and consequently pursued a union with Germany which was frustrated by the political interests of the victors of World War I. The second section details the rise of an “Austro -fascist” dictatorship in Austria during the mid -1930s which promoted an Austrian patriotism grounded in a positive portrayal of the Habsburg Monarc hy in order to remain independent from Nazi Germany. The third section examines Austria’s forcible incorporation into the Nazi German state, and the effort by the Third Reich to completely eradicate the existence of a distinctive Austrian identity by cast ing the Habsburg era in a negative light.

First, I argue that Stalin’s deportation and exile of Crimean Tatars amounted to a bureaucratic genocide: a Soviet iteration on state violence that used inefficiency, irresponsibility, confusion, and loyalty to the system to destroy the national and class “enemies” of the Soviet Union. Second, this study emphasizes how ethnic cleansing in Crimea was extraordinary in the way Soviet power transformed Crimea after the deportations. From 1944 to 1954, this transformation created a “new Russian Crimea” through policies of mass settlement, land redistribution, and renaming geographic locations and rewriting history.

Haag Abstract The Austrian scholar and social theorist Othmar Spann (1878-1950) was a major figure in the "conservative revolution" that fired the imagination of many Central European intellectuals after World War I. Born in the Habsburg monarchy as it was disintegrating under the pres¬ sures of nationalism and industrialization, Spann seemed destined for a conventional academic career until war, revolution, and economic collapse destroyed the social and ideological foundations of the old order in 1918. A series of lectures delivered at the University of Vienna soon after the war quickly made Spann a major spokesman for the "war generation"—young men whose rough-hewn idealism found few outlets in the grim world of postwar Central Europe. Published in Germany in 1921 under the title of Per wahre Staat (The True State), the ideas which Spann had previously outlined in articles and lec¬ tures soon became major ideological weapons for Rightist forces in Germany and Austria. A prolific writer and publicist as well as a gifted lecturer and teacher, Spann had by the late 1920's assembled a circle of dedicated disciples who enthusiastically spread his doctrines throughout German-speaking Central Europe. Spann's conservative view of society can be traced back to the ideas of the early nineteenth century German and Austrian political Romanticists who viewed man and his social destiny in essentially aesthetic and organic categories.

    „… aus politischen Gründen eine heikle Angelegenheit“ Das Burgundbuch der Stadt Freiburg im Breisgau 1941/42 Wolfgang Freund In der zweiten Märzwoche des Jahres1941 besuchte der nationalsozialistische Oberbürgermeister von Freiburg im Breisgau, Franz Kerber (1901–1945), in Dijon im besetzten Frankreich die Schriftsteller und burgundischen Regionalis- ten Gaston Roupnel (1871–1946)1 und Johannès Thomasset (1895–1973). Kerber bat die beiden Verfechter burgundischer Eigenheit2 gegen Honorar zu einem deutschen Sammelwerk über Burgund beizutragen. Roupnel und Thomasset sagten beide zu. Nach seiner Rückkehr nach Freiburg erklärte Kerber seinen neu gewonnenen burgundischen Mitarbeitern den Plan der Aufsatzsammlung: Über Roupnel und Thomasset hinaus würde um angesehene deutsche Wissen- schaftler und Dichter geworben. Tyaglyy Taurida National University, Ukraine Why did antisemitic propaganda continue in specific localities long after the Jews had been exterminated there? Relying on a case study of the Crimea, the following survey addresses this and other little-researched questions, such as how propaganda fit into the occupation regime’s divi- sion of labor and how the German administration organized the means of mass information; why some antisemitic canards were emphasized and others downplayed; the balance between local and central information sources; and the role of collaborationist intellectuals. The author considers the long-term influence of Nazi propaganda on its intended audiences. Historiography It is widely known that antisemitism was a basic component of Nazi propaganda in the occupied territories. How antisemitic doctrine was adapted to specific circum- stances of the Crimea—how the “Jewish pawn” was exploited—demonstrate the importance of the Jews in Nazi plans even when few or no living Jews remained in a given territory. In each region the German forces carried out a differentiated policy dependent on local situations and conditions, the strategic interests of the occupiers, the ethnic composition of the population, and other factors. Propaganda was one instrument of this policy, promoted via the means of mass information in place before the arrival of the occupying forces or created by them.
