States of Repair: Institutions of Private Life in the Postwar Anglophone Novel Abstract This project proposes that one of the most enduring cultural legacies of the Second World War was the welfare state’s fantasy of rebuilding Britain. Beginning with the 1942 Beveridge Report’s promise to care for citizens “from the cradle to the grave,” the welfare state envisioned that managing individuals’ private lives would result in a more coherent and equitable community. Literature records this historic transition in order to narrate its transformative social potential, as well as its darker failures. Midcentury writers Elizabeth Bowen, George Orwell, and Muriel Spark used the militarized Home Front to present postwar Britain as a zone of lost privacy and new collective logics. As the century progressed, influential novelists such as Alan Hollinghurst, Michael Ondaatje, and Kazuo Ishiguro all looked backwards to 1945, registering an unfulfilled nostalgia for a Britain that never was, as well as the need to come to terms with welfare’s decaying remains. Their works index welfare’s limitations, situating Britain’s domestic policies within longer trajectories of colonial, racist, and homophobic violence. Taken together, the authors of my dissertation offer a new literary history of the Second World War, challenging not only the longstanding mythology of the “People’s War,” but also, more urgently, the fragile beginnings of a “People’s Peace.” In particular, these novels metonymize welfare through their engagement with the built environment, owing to postwar reconstruction’s radical revisions of the home, as well as to the novel’s shared interest in private life. These works invent quasi-administrated home spaces—whether ill-fitting apartments, girls’ hostels, libraries, prisons, hospitals, or schools—to reveal the intimate social effects that follow when infrastructures of collective living displace older structures of private life. In doing so, their novels deploy the welfare state’s fantasy of repair, but they also challenge its logic, inventing untenable living spaces only available in the zone of literature. Instead of the equitable, coherent social citizenry as imagined by the welfare state, these novels introduce us to the debris of its reconstruction: discarded blueprints, semi- inhabitable home spaces, and persistent markers of social inequality that resist grand fantasies of state repair.     Teaching Classical Languages Volume 10, Issue 2 Kopestonsky 71 Never Out of Style: Teaching Latin Love Poetry with Pop Music1 Theodora B. Kopestonsky University of Tennessee, Knoxville ABSTRACT Students often struggle to interpret Latin poetry. To combat the confusion, teachers can turn to a modern parallel (pop music) to assist their students in understanding ancient verse. Pop music is very familiar to most students, and they already trans- late its meaning unconsciously. Building upon what students already know, teach- ers can reframe their approach to poetry in a way that is more effective. This essay shows how to present the concept of meter (dactylic hexameter and elegy) and scansion using contemporary pop music, considers the notion of the constructed persona utilizing a modern musician, Taylor Swift, and then addresses the pattern of the love affair in Latin poetry and Taylor Swift’s music. To illustrate this ap- proach to connecting ancient poetry with modern music, the lyrics and music video from one song, Taylor Swift’s Blank Space (2014), are analyzed and compared to poems by Catullus. Finally, this essay offers instructions on how to create an as- signment employing pop music as a tool to teach poetry — a comparative analysis between a modern song and Latin poetry in the original or in translation. Introduction The aim of this thesis is to analyse and compare the treatment of moral values in three espionage novels by Graham Greene- The Ministry of Fear, The Quiet American and The Comedians- to show that the debate of moral values in Greene's novels is closely connected with the notion that the gravity of sins committed is connected to the amount of pain one's decision causes to other human beings. The evil committed by his characters is to be judged individually and one of his characters' greatest fears is the fear to cause the pain to other human beings. Espionage novels were used because Greene's experience with espionage is often projected into his novels and it is often central to the plot.

His imagination endowed them with moral urgency. He found in the plots of the common thriller, its concealments and duplicities, the elements of a more universal tale. His characters become the agents of the divided heart and their yearning for safety, escape, refuge, becomes a fable of the modern world. Graham Greene’s childhood would have divided any heart. Born in 1904, he was the son of a master (later headmaster) of Berkhamsted School in Hert- fordshire. After a quiet childhood, he was sent at the age of thirteen to live as a boarder in the school. This placed him on the other side of a symbolic green baize door which separated the family quarters from the school. The other boys assumed he was a Judas, reporting to his father all that happened in the dormitory. Two of his friends subjected him to elaborate mental cruelties, which he recalled as torture. Greene fell apart, made attempts at suicide, and eventually ran away to Berkhamsted Common, intending to become, as he wrote in his autobio- graphy, A Sort of Life (1971), ‘an invisible watcher, a spy on all that went on’. His parents brought him back into the family quarters, but he was never the same. In a family with a devastating history of mental illness, he showed signs of depression and instability.
