From the Editor De l’éditeur

I had the pleasure of attending the NGPA’s Aviation Inclusion Summit in Scottsdale Arizona a couple of weeks ago, and gave a slide presentation on “Inclusion in Canada”. My review of this event is in this issue. The Summit was definitely one of the best organized events I have attended, and I learned a

lot. I came home with pages of notes, and look forward to the next such event. For Vancouver, the event is a Potluck and BYOB, since it is being held at a private party facility. For Toronto and Montréal, both locations are pubs.

We are looking forward to seeing you at one of our cross-Canada parties this holiday season.

NGPA 2019 Aviation Inclusion Summit

On Sunday 17th November, my partner Ed and I flew down to Phoenix AZ for the two-day Summit. Our transportation connections worked out smoothly, the hotel was excellent with great service, and they have an outstanding restaurant right in the hotel. Loved those scallops and the mushroom risotto!

That afternoon we had a welcome reception for the presenters on the rooftop patio overlooking Scottsdale, a suburb of Phoenix, followed by another reception for all the attendees, with drinks and food hosted by Alaska Airlines. We met many of the NGPA Directors and other presenters, and lingered until twilight.

The next day, both the breakfast and lunch buffet were hosted by sponsors and were working meals with keynote speakers addressing us while we ate. The next session was a panel discussion consisting of six representatives from different non-profit organizations such as the Organization of Black Aviation Professionals, Latino Pilot’s Association, Women in Aviation and others, discussing the benefits of inclusion from their perspectives.

The breakout sessions which followed consisted of two running concurrently , so one had to decide which to attend. Since I was presenting on one of them, you can guess which one I went to!

P a g e 6 Silver Dart | December 2019

For my presentation, I had the full hour and having rehearsed it several times the week before, it fitted the time slot well. It was entitled “Inclusion in Canada” and the slide deck and some of the references I used are now on the CAP website.

You’ll notice in the slide deck a collage of 12 images showing what Canada has done for inclusion over the decades which I showed again at the end, giving the audience a challenge “what would your company’s similar collage look like to show what successes you have had”. It was a great opportunity to feature how Inclusion is working in Canada and also what challenges we are still facing to make it the norm in business. One section of the talk featured Canada’s “100 best diversity employers” and the ideas they have had to bring inclusion into their organizations.

The NGPA were extremely well organized and showed very good attention to detail. I had a chance to speak with the NGPA two Co-Chairs about joint events, that will be further discussed at our next CAP Board meeting.

This summit was a new concept. To avoid non-profit organizations being competitive when dealing with inclusion in their own fields, the idea was to work with other non-profits, and it was great to see all these organizations pulling together to discuss the various issues.

Altogether, it was a superb learning opportunity with much good networking, interaction between organizations, and CAP’s contribution to the agenda was clearly appreciated.

Board Meeting Réunion du Conseil

Thursday 7th November 2019

After the usual formalities and committee reports, the dates and times for the year-end socials in Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal were reviewed. Adrian mentioned that the 2018 CRA Notice of Assessment had been received and of course no income tax was required. One of the Co-Chairs would be flying later in November to Phoenix to give a presentation on “Inclusion in Canada” at the NGPA’s Aviation Inclusion Summit.

A printed order of fact and tip sheets has been received for use at promotional events. Planning for 2020 Pride booths has been started and consideration is being given to hosting a booth this year at Ottawa Pride. Peter is working with a volunteer to assess whether a CAP scholarship can be offered, and Adrian will prepare the 2020 events list for discussion at the next meeting.

There was a discussion about when and where to consider jointly-branded events with the NGPA and this will be discussed later in the month with the NGPA Co-Chairs. With year-end, inventories will need to be taken of merchandise and equipment in all three cross-Canada locations in anticipation of the financial statements which come due in March 2020.

The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 9th January 2020.

Why did you get involved in aviation? Tell us about how it's a part of your life now.

Since I was a kid, I have always had a very strong interest in airplanes. I would ride my bike to the YVR airport on weekends just to sit and watch the planes bounce up and down off the runway all day and take pictures of them since I'm also a photographer. Now, working in the airline industry, I have the great opportunity to fly to as many pride events around the world as I can fit in a year. I actually book my vacation weeks every year to accommodate these events to meet awesome cool guys from all over the world.

How did you find out about or first get involved with CAP? What have you enjoyed most about your involvement?

I first found out about CAP when I attended my first YVR pride festival after officially and was inspired to talk to the guys at their CAP booth at Sunset Beach festival at a time when I needed to start making social connections within my new community. What I enjoyed most was while travelling to as many Prides across the country as possible, I was given the great opportunity to march in Pride parades and helping out with our booths as much as possible, and meeting the guys from other bases, but juggling a full time work schedule and Pride events schedules sometimes hasn't been easy for the last couple years, but it was fun. I heard recently that I'm the only guy in the world that has marched in as many Canada Pride parades as I have in the last few years with my work float, and I plan to do it all over again next summer as well.

Tell us about the best trip you've ever taken or your favourite destination to jet off to.

Probably one of my best trips was a couple summers ago. I was about watch my first ever in Europe, Paris to be exact, when a guy approached us and asked us to march in the Paris pride parade with their float, which we did, and it was great! Although my favorite destination would be Australia.

Anything else you want to say about yourself

Since joining CAP, meeting people who work in the airline industry within the LGBTQ community has really give me the confidence to change my life and be much more positive about myself in my career.
