Event Review Revue D'événement NGPA 2019 Welcome Aboard Bienvenue à bord presentation about where we are in Canada and I have to admit, Canada has come a long way in inclusion. Not long ago, civil servants could lose their job if it was discovered they were gay or lesbian – compare that to today where we are being included as valued members of the community. It's the end of the Year and holidays are coming up. CAP will be hosting year end Parties on Friday, December 6th. I hope you’ll come out and connect with the others in the flock. My review of this event is in this issue. The Summit was definitely one of the best organized events I have attended, and I learned a lot. I came home with pages of notes, and look forward to the next such event. With the final newsletter issue for 2019 now at hand, our cover is once again a Whether you celebrate Hanukkah, retrospective of all the cover images we Christmas or the holidays, may this have presented this year. holiday season be enjoyable and full of happiness, and I wish you a productive This is also the month where we 2020 with good health. celebrate with year-end parties, and we are pleased to hold these in Vancouver, Toronto and Montréal, all on the same day at the same time – check out our Best wishes, featured event listing in this issue. Silver Dart | December 2019 P a g e 5 Event Review Revue d’événement NGPA 2019 Aviation Inclusion Summit On Sunday 17th November, my partner Ed and I flew down to Phoenix AZ for the two-day Summit. Our transportation connections worked out smoothly, the hotel was excellent with great service, and they have an outstanding restaurant right in the hotel. Loved those scallops and the mushroom risotto! That afternoon we had a welcome reception for the presenters on the rooftop patio overlooking Scottsdale, a suburb of Phoenix, followed by another reception for all the attendees, with drinks and food hosted by Alaska Airlines. We met many of the NGPA Directors and other presenters, and lingered until twilight. The next day, both the breakfast and lunch buffet were hosted by sponsors and were working meals with keynote speakers addressing us while we ate. The next session was a panel discussion consisting of six representatives from different non-profit organizations such as the Organization of Black Aviation Professionals, Latino Pilot’s Association, Women in Aviation and others, discussing the benefits of inclusion from their perspectives. The breakout sessions which followed consisted of two running concurrently , so one had to decide which to attend. Since I was presenting on one of them, you can guess which one I went to! P a g e 6 Silver Dart | December 2019 For my presentation, I had the full hour and having rehearsed it several times the week before, it fitted the time slot well. It was entitled “Inclusion in Canada” and the slide deck and some of the references I used are now on the CAP website. You’ll notice in the slide deck a collage of 12 images showing what Canada has done for inclusion over the decades which I showed again at the end, giving the audience a challenge “what would your company’s similar collage look like to show what successes you have had”. It was a great opportunity to feature how Inclusion is working in Canada and also what challenges we are still facing to make it the norm in business. One section of the talk featured Canada’s “100 best diversity employers” and the ideas they have had to bring inclusion into their organizations. The NGPA were extremely well organized and showed very good attention to detail. I had a chance to speak with the NGPA two Co-Chairs about joint events, that will be further discussed at our next CAP Board meeting. This summit was a new concept. To avoid non-profit organizations being competitive when dealing with inclusion in their own fields, the idea was to work with other non-profits, and it was great to see all these organizations pulling together to discuss the various issues. Altogether, it was a superb learning opportunity with much good networking, interaction between organizations, and CAP’s contribution to the agenda was clearly appreciated. Adrian mentioned that the 2018 CRA Notice of Assessment had been received and of course no income tax was required. One of the Co-Chairs would be flying later in November to Phoenix to give a presentation on “Inclusion in Canada” at the NGPA’s Aviation Inclusion Summit. A printed order of fact and tip sheets has been received for use at promotional events. Planning for 2020 Pride booths has been started and consideration is being given to hosting a booth this year at Ottawa Pride. Peter is working with a volunteer to assess whether a CAP scholarship can be offered, and Adrian will prepare the 2020 events list for discussion at the next meeting. There was a discussion about when and where to consider jointly-branded events with the NGPA and this will be discussed later in the month with the NGPA Co-Chairs. With year-end, inventories will need to be taken of merchandise and equipment in all three cross-Canada locations in anticipation of the financial statements which come due in March 2020. The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday 9th January 2020. Although his homosexuality has not in itself been an issue in his campaigns for public service, he was targeted for assassination by a man who hates homosexuals. Bertrand Delanoë has described himself as "descended from a family of travelers." His ancestors were Breton, Italian, and English, and his French-born parents moved to Tunisia. Delanoë was born in the capital, Tunis, on May 30, 1950 and grew up in Bizerte on the Mediterranean coast. Delanoë's father, Auguste Delanoë, a surveyor, was an atheist and a right-winger. His mother, Yvonne Delanoë, was a nurse and a devoutly religious Roman Catholic. In the matter of their children's education, Madame Delanoë prevailed: Delanoë and his sister attended Catholic schools and were instructed in the faith. The years of Delanoë's youth were politically tense ones in Tunisia, then still a French colony. When French soldiers fired on Arab citizens in 1961 in the Battle of Bizerte, the young Delanoë was incensed. "I thought an Arab should be equal to a Frenchman. That was my first political thought. That's how, because of colonialism, I began to identify with the left," he stated.
