CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS//APRIL 2008 04-20 APR: Exactitudes in the name of a novel photography exhibition that’s been running in the lower ground fl oor UltraLounge in Selfridges since February. Held in conjunction with the Photographer’s Gallery, the show features work by Rotterdam-based photographer Ari Versluis and stylist Ellie Uyttenbroek, who have been working together since 1994. Exactitudes is inspired by the energy and diversity of street life in diff erent cities across the world, with each ‘exactitude’ comprising of a group of 12 individual images. Portrayed in an identical frame and in the same pose, the initial uniformity and striking similarities between people are heightened, presenting an almost scientifi c and anthropological record. The project so far includes group pictures from Beijing, Bordeaux, Cape Verde, Casablanca, New York and Rio de Janeiro. Now they’re adding London to list. They’ll be showing 88 of their pieces during the exhibition, but during their three-week in-house residency, they’ve shot a selection of images from our own capital city… and we’re reliably informed that one of the new works could be a selection of bears recruited via the Kings Arms on Poland Street! Add to that the fact that a restaurant off ers training to underprivileged young people and you have all the boxes ticked for being a fashionable and feel-good 21st century eatery. Acorn House ticks all those boxes. The venue is a joint venture between the Shoreditch Trust, the Terrence Higgins Trust (whose HQ on Grey’s Inn Road houses the restaurant) and the Bliss Restaurant Consultancy, which is made up of Executive Head Chef Arthur Potts Dawson and General Manager Jamie Grainger Smith, both of whom were formally at Jamie Oliver’s Fifteen Restaurant. And just like Fifteen, Acorn House off ers eco-friendly restaurant training to local young adults each year. Every aspect of the venture, from the design of the restaurant through to food and wine Acorn House’s dining itself aims to be environmentally conscious and sustainable. But what about the actual food? We started with the seared area (top) and environmentally- sustainable prawns with golden salsify and chilli vinegar (£9.50). The large sweet prawns – combined with the sweetness conscious interiors of the caramelized salsify (one of my favourite ingredients) – provided a suitable contrast to the sharpness of the chili (right) vinegar. My companion opted for the roasted duck confi t, apple, prune and spring leaf (£9.50) – a classic combination of fruit and game that worked well. For our main course, the roasted English mutton with minted pear and apple (£18.00) was suitably rich and melted in your mouth. The minted pear and apple complimented the sweetness of the meat nicely. The pan-fried guinea foul, with prosciutto, mascarpone and sage (£19.00), was well cooked - plump and juicy. For dessert, the rhubarb crumble and custard (£6.50) off ered large velvety pieces of rhubarb with custard on one side of the plate with a tower of tasty crumble. When brought together the combination was comforting and more-ish, although the crumble lacked the crunchiness that you might expect. The spiced, warm, “fl ourless” chocolate cake and ginger ice cream (£6.50) was presented as a pyramid of chocolate with a dollop of ice cream at its base. The ginger ice cream is the star here, and perfectly compliments the gooey chocolate cake. While the prices are on the high side, the portions are large and you will certainly not leave hungry. You can also be assured that your money is paying for ethically-produced ingredients – an example that more and more restaurants are sure to follow over the coming years. Despite the lack of funds to complete the refurbishment in time for its opening, and the fact that it did always seem to be a ‘work in progress’, some of the concepts were truly groundbreaking. There was Toybox, with its quirkily superb mix of performance art and clubbing, Evolve with its big name circuit DJs and big international brands like Matinée that wanted a London venue. Sadly, after 18 months, the numbers started to dwindle. That’s when All Things Orange (owners of Fire) stepped up to have a go. Under their management, Area re-opened in March to the blowing of many bells and whistles, and we have to say, we too were blown away by the changes. The main room is now adorned with a mega pixel lightbox-style ceiling and some 50 lasers that give the eff ect of green rain. DJ boxes have been moved, toilets upgraded and the chill out bar converted into an 80’s Limelight religious-styled auditorium complete with stained-glass window. The launch night party was awash with muscle boys and drag queens all eager to see the changes, and with stage performances from break-dancers, acrobats and just plain bizarre performers, it truly was a spectacle. The DJ roster contains many of the Vauxhall names we have come to love, but for us the highlight was the awesome funky house set from Steve Pitron who consistently sets the fl oor alight with his choice of tracks and remixes that lead revellers on an aural journey the likes of which you’ll never see in a travel brochure. What the future holds for Area and Depot (formerly Crash) is anyone’s guess, but one thing’s for certain; the Orange team sure know how to design a venue and throw one hell of a party! The management has always known that local gay boys like to enjoy a bit of drag on the Sabbath, and in years gone by, legends like Lily Savage have held residencies at the bar. Nowadays, it’s the D.E Experience who rule the roost each Sunday afternoon, with a weekly show that nicely separates the S.L.A.G.S and Chill-Out club promotions. The afternoon session begins at 2pm with S.L.A.G.S, before D.E.E comes on at 5pm to thrill the throng with some classic songs and a little bit of comedy. After 6pm (or later depending on how many encores the boys demand), Chill-Out takes over, with DJs Simon Le Vans, Andy Almighty and Sean Sirrs spinning the huge dance anthems and commercial house. As our pictures show, the place is always absolutely rammed for the D.E. Experience, with most lads staying on until chucking out time at midnight. As the southern sister to Camden’s Black Cap, it attracts the absolute crème de la crème of performers. Dave Lynn, Rose Garden, Sandra, Pam Ann… all are currently treading the ’Brewers boards, but we trotted along on a recent Wednesday evening for a bit of ‘Double Penetration’ from the original nasty girl from Spanish Harlem, Miss Laquisha Jonz. LJ starts her shift DJ’ing from 10pm and plays an eclectic indie/RnB/hip hop mishmash. She takes audience requests but be warned, if your demands are not LJ material you will be disparaged and verbally abused on the mic! Unless you request a track by Steps that is, then she’ll just take you out the back and bludgeon you will her size-7 Primark slingback. Midnight is show time at the Two Brewers, so sliding out from behind the decks, Laquisha launches into her unique comedy-gameshow-live singing spectacular that leaves you gasping for breath. Her patter is topical and includes spoofs, jokes and commentary on all the current stories of the day, but more than that, she is a social critic, and an effi cient one, acerbic and devastating. Her video-aided gameshows include ‘Who’s arse is it anyway’, ‘Snatch the weave’, Salama’s ‘Who’s under the burqa’ and ‘Female or shemale’ and are backed up by powerful vocals of popular songs but with Jonzifi ed lyrics… we particularly like ‘Tranny Chasing’ to the tune of Robbie Williams’ Angels and the ‘Think he’s a homo’ version of Tiff any’s number one hit 'I Think We're Alone Now'. They’re either inclined to make the eff ort or they’re not. However, once in a while a club will come along that practically demands a little fl amboyance. Circus is one such night. Now running for over a year at the Soho Revue Bar, the night is the playground for hostess Jodie Harsh and her coterie of costumed reprobates. The night attracts a complete mix of club kids, celebrities and freaks, and the plush grandeur of the Soho Revue Bar provides the perfect setting for the weekly goings-on. You can mingle at the bar, grab yourself a booth seat, shake a leg on the pocket-sized dancefl oor, or even throw yourself around one of the poles if you’re really feeling like showing off . And, given the amount of eff ort that some regulars make with their attire, showing-off is usually pretty high on the agenda! Jodie usually manages to secure a special guest celebrity DJ each week, and on the night of our visit it turned out to be Pete Burns of Dead Or Alive fame. “Pete Burns turned out to be a bit of a secret bedroom DJ at Circus,” Jodie told us afterwards. “He was really good. He looked amazing and there wasn’t a diva strop in sight. One of their fl agship nights for the past 17 of those years has been Fruit Machine on a Wednesday, which has gone through several incarnations from dance to drag to cabaret and more recently to urban. In keeping with its current set of clothes, and to refl ect the growing trend for all thing ‘street’ and 80s, the whole night has been re-branded and re-positioned in the market and is now called WORK! Note precise use of the exclamation mark, it’s not ‘work’, its ‘WORK!’ as in ‘you’d better...’ The music policy of the club refl ects this new identity and includes hip hop and r’n’b in the Star Bar, disco and cabaret with Studio 54 legend Tallulah in the Departure Lounge and 80s/electro with Dennis Da Silva in the Dakota Bar.
