FLYERS VS. CAPITALS

This is the first game between the clubs in exactly a month. They will meet twice this week and then will wrap up the season series with a back-to-back in Washington in the final days of the season.

The Flyers and Washington last faced one another eight times in a season in 1981-82, the year of the NHL realignment that moved the Patrick Division from the Campbell Conference to the Wales Conference. For the next 20 seasons after that, the teams met seven times a year until the 1993-94 realignment that added Anaheim and Florida to the league. They have met no fewer than three items in a season since then, with the one set of that length coming in the 2012-13 shortened season.

The Flyers have been hot and cold against the Capitals the last two seasons, going 3-0-1 in 2019-20 a year after going 0-4. Last season marked the first time since the 2010-11 campaign that the Flyers picked up at least a point in all four games against Washington.

2020-21 SEASON SERIES

Sunday, February 7, 2021 – Flyers 7, Washington 4 at Capital One Arena: The Flyers scored two late goals to tilt a back-and-forth affair in their direction for good, taking a 7-4 decision in Washington. The Capitals opened up a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson, but two tallies by Scott Laughton with 1:27 left in the first and 2:29 gone in the second erased that lead. After Ovechkin made it 3-2 at the 4:08 mark, the Flyers re-tied the score on a goal by Robert Hagg at 7:50 and then pulled ahead when James van Riemsdyk scored with 3:24 left to play in the frame, but Nick Backstrom knotted things at 4-4 with just under 57 seconds remaining in the period. The Flyers shut the door from there and went ahead for good when Sean Couturier scored 31 seconds into the third period; Laughton went on to add insurance when he completed his first career hat trick with 2:09 to play, and Couturier later potted an empty-netter to finish off the scoring. Carter Hart turned away 33 of 37 to secure the win. Vitek Vanek started for Washington and made 10 saves on 14 shots in 36:36 before stepping aside for Craig Anderson, who was saddled with the loss after making six saves on eight shots in 22:45. Stars of the Game: 1 – Scott Laughton; 2 – Alex Ovechkin; 3 – Sean Couturier.

Sunday, March 7, 2021 – Washington 3, Flyers 1 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers took the ice in front of fans at Wells Fargo Center for the first time in three days shy of a calendar year, but Washington spoiled the return in a 3-1 setback. Joel Farabee put the Flyers on the board first with 8:56 left in the first period, but it ended up being the only puck the Flyers could put past Ilya Samsonov on the evening. Alex Ovechkin tied the score with 4:49 left in the second period, and a goal by Dmitry Orlov with less than 16 seconds to play in the frame made it 2-1. Nick Jensen added insurance 4:15 into the third. Carter Hart stopped 24 of 27 shots, while Samsonov turned away 36 of 37. Stars of the Game: 1 – Dmitry Orlov; 2 – Joel Farabee; 3 – T.J. Oshie.

Thursday, March 11, 2021 – Washington 5, Flyers 3 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers scored two third-period goals to nearly close a 4-1 second- intermission deficit, but couldn’t find the equalizer in an eventual 5-3 setback to the Capitals. After Alex Ovechkin opened the scoring 8:37 into the contest, Travis Konecny was able to tie it on a power play just under 2 ½ minutes later. But Washington went ahead for good just under two minutes after that on a goal by Conor Sheary. John Carlson made it 3-1 6:58 into the second period, and Nic Dowd pushed the lead to three with 2:27 left in the frame. Ivan Provorov made it 4-2 with a goal 1:43 into the third and then Scott Laughton cut the lead to one with 9:15 left to play, but the Flyers couldn’t get anything else through before Dowd iced it with an empty-netter. Brian Elliott made 17 saves, while Ilya Samsonov stopped 30. Stars of the Game: 1 – John Carlson; 2 – Alex Ovechkin; 3 – Sean Couturier.

Saturday, March 13, 2021 – Washington 5, Flyers 4 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers mounted a late comeback attempt for a second consecutive game but had the same unfortunate outcome, this time in a 5-4 setback to the Caps. Washington scored twice in the opening period to take a 2-0 first- intermission lead, getting goals from Daniel Sprong 4:40 into the game and from Carl Hagelin with 6:39 left before the break. The teams see-sawed from there, trading goals throughout the second period – James van Riemsdyk scored 2:36 into the frame but saw that answered by Nick Jensen just 29 seconds later, and then a goal from Nolan Patrick at the 5:47 mark was offset by one from Alex Ovechkin on the power play with 6:50 left before the break. Nic Dowd scored the eventual game-winner 4:25 into the third, making it 5-2; the Flyers clawed within a goal on a power play tally from Shayne Gostisbehere with 6:53 left followed by an extra-attacker goal from Claude Giroux with 2:57 to play, but they could not quite find the equalizer. Brian Elliott started and made seven saves on 10 shots in 23:05 before stepping aside for Carter Hart, who was assessed the loss after making 11 saves on 13 shots over 33:40 of play. Ilya Samsonov earned the win with 28 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – Alex Ovechkin; 2 – Nic Dowd; 3 – James van Riemsdyk.

LAST GAME

Sunday, April 11, 2021 – Buffalo 5, Flyers 3 at Wells Fargo Center: The Sabres tied the game with 3:03 left and took the lead 25 seconds later in an eventual 5-3 win over the Flyers. Oskar Lindblom and Joel Farabee gave the Flyers a 2-0 lead with first-period tallies that were answered by goals from Sam Reinhart and Arttu Ruotsalainen 46 seconds apart in the early goings of the second period. Shayne Gostisbehere gave the Flyers a 3-2 lead 3:47 into the third, but the Sabres generated their late flurry with a tying goal from Jeff Skinner and the eventual winner from Rasmus Asplund. Casey Mittlestadt finished off the proceedings with an empty-netter. Linus Ullmark made 40 saves to earn the win, while Carter Hart absorbed the loss with 26 stops. Stars of the Game: 1 – Rasmus Asplund; 2 – Jeff Skinner; 3 – Shayne Gostisbehere.

NOTABLES

Sean Couturier had an assist and led the Flyers with five shots on goal and eight total attempts. He was 12-for-17 (70.6 pct) on faceoffs.

Shayne Gostisbehere and Joel Farabee each had two-point games with a goal and an assist.

Robert Hagg led the Flyers with six assists.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers made two trades before yesterday’s NHL deadline, sending Michael Raffl to Washington for a fifth-round pick in 2022 and Erik Gustafsson to Montreal for a 7th-round pick in 2021.

Raffl, 32 (12/1/1988), was in his eighth season with the Flyers. He originally signed with the team as a free agent on May 31, 2013. In 504 career games with the Flyers, Raffl recorded 81 goals and 79 assists for 160 points. Philadelphia will retain 25 percent of the remaining salary on Raffl in the deal.

Gustafsson, 29 (3/14/1992), signed with the Flyers as a free agent on October 12, 2020. He appeared in 24 games for the Flyers this season, scoring one goal and adding nine assists for 10 points while averaging 17:24 of ice time. Philadelphia will retain 50 percent of the remaining salary on Gustafsson.

The Flyers also signed forward Scott Laughton to a five-year contract extension. Laughton, 26 (5/30/1994), is in his fifth full season with the Flyers and his ninth overall with the organization. He enjoyed the best year of his career last season when he recorded 13 goals and 14 assists for 27 points in 49 games before the season pause, an average of 0.55 points per game. He also had a career-best plus-13 rating.

Travis Konecny saw a five-game scoring streak come to an end against Buffalo. Despite that unfortunate development, Konecny still has two goals and five assists for seven points in his last six games.

Ivan Provorov ranks seventh in the NHL in average ice time per game at 25:18.

The Flyers rank third in the NHL in faceoffs as a team at 53.2 percent. At the time of the NHL’s pause of the season due to COVID-19, the Flyers had played 69 games and were 41-21-7 for 89 points, good for the sixth-best record in the league and fourth-best in the Eastern Conference. Vigneault was the runner-up in voting for the Jack Adams Award as NHL Coach of the Year for his work in engineering the turnaround.

Vigneault enters the 2020-21 season with 1,285 games of experience as an NHL head coach over parts of 17 seasons. Prior to coming to Philadelphia, he served as the head coach of the New York Rangers for five seasons (2013-18), the Vancouver Canucks for seven seasons (2006-13) and the Montreal Canadiens for parts of four seasons (1997-2000). He also served as the head coach for Team Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championships in Slovakia, guiding the squad to a silver medal.
