Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips December 15, 2017 Filppula’s goal leads Flyers to 5th straight win By AARON BRACY Associated Press Dec. 15, 2017 PHILADELPHIA (AP) — No longer struggling, the suddenly confident Philadelphia Flyers are now able to overcome their own blunders. Valtteri Filppula scored the game-winner with 2 1/2 minutes left in the second period and Travis Sanheim netted his first career goal to help the Flyers win their fifth straight game, 2-1 over the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday night. Brian Elliott rebounded from a costly mistake early in the game to make 19 saves for the Flyers, whose winning streak has come on the heels of a 10-game losing streak. The winning stretch began with a three-game Canadian trip that started with coach Dave Hakstol changing the team’s formation to a more defensive-minded 1-2-2 alignment. Philadelphia (13-11-7) has outscored opponents 19-8 since. Buffalo opened the scoring 1 1/2 minutes into the game thanks to a miscue by Elliott. The Flyers goalie attempted to clear the puck from behind the net, but he passed right to Buffalo’s Zemgus Girgensons. The Buffalo center then passed in front to Ryan O’Reilly, who shot into an empty net for his eighth goal of the season. “A little miscommunication and a bad play on my part,” Elliott said. But the Flyers didn’t get rattled — something that maybe wouldn’t have happened two weeks ago. “You can take a punch better when you have a swagger to your game,” Hakstol said.

Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips February 28, 2021 Elliott stops 23 shots in Flyers’ 3-0 win over Sabres By John Wawrow Associated Press February 27, 2021 BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Brian Elliott stopped 23 shots to shut out the Buffalo Sabres for a second time this season in leading the Philadelphia Flyers to a 3-0 win on Saturday. The Flyers were spurred by a replenished lineup in which four players returned after spending two weeks in the NHL’s COVID-19 protocol. They included Scott Laughton, who scored a breakaway goal to make it 3-0 late in the second period. Sean Couturier had a goal and assist to extend his points streak to five games, in which he has four goals and five assists, and Shayne Gostisbehere also scored. Philadelphia improved to 3-2-2 in its past seven, and won consecutive games for the first time since a five-game winning streak to close January. Elliott improved to 5-1 this season and upped his career record to 15-2-2 with four shutouts against the Sabres, including a 40-save outing in a 3-0 win on Jan. 19. Elliott chalked up his dominance to opening his career with Ottawa, Buffalo’s traditional Atlantic Division rival. “I have a good feeling obviously when I come in this rink. I wanted to keep that going,” said the 14th-year player now in his fourth season in Philadelphia. He also noted the jump the Flyers showed in having a near fully healthy lineup. “You could feel the energy in the room the last couple of practices here.

  • Burgess Episode Leaves England at All-Time
SPORTS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2015 Backlund scores in OT as Flames beat Flyers 2-1 CALGARY: Mikael Backlund scored 35 seconds into overtime and also had an assist to give the Calgary Flames a 2-1 victory over the skidding Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. With the Flames breaking in on a 2-on-1, Johnny Gaudreau’s shot was stopped by Michal Neuvirth. The rebound popped straight out, hit Backlund’s leg as he skated toward the crease and went in. Calgary improved to 3-0 in overtime, while Philadelphia fell to 1-3. Josh Jooris also scored for Calgary (4-9-1). The Flames improved to 2-5 at home. Michael Raffl scored his first of the season for Philadelphia (4-6-3). The Flyers are 0-3-1 on a five-game road trip that ends Saturday in Winnipeg. In a matchup between struggling teams - the Flames with one win in their previous six games and the Flyers winless in five - both looked tentative all night in a sloppy affair. Neither side could generate any sustained pressure and there were numerous turnovers and bobbled passes. It appeared Calgary was going to head to the second intermission with a lead for just the sec- ond time this season, but the Flyers tied it 1-all with 36 seconds left in the period. Controlling the puck behind the Flames net, Claude Giroux cen- tered a pass to Raffl, whose shot from 15 feet out fluttered past Karri Ramo, who only got a piece of it. Dating back to last season, it was the first goal in 17 games for Raffl, who scored 21 in 2014-15 as an NHL sophomore.
