FLYERS VS. BLACKHAWKS

This is the first of two games this month between the two teams, which will comprise the season series. The Flyers will be in Chicago on October 24.

The Flyers are the home team for tonight’s contest, which means the Flyers and Blackhawks will not meet in Philadelphia this season. The Blackhawks have not won a regular season game in Philadelphia since November 9, 1996, when they took a 4-1 win in the eighth game the Flyers had ever played in their brand-new building. Since then, the Flyers have won 15 consecutive regular season games against Chicago at the Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers only had one win in the Blackhawks’ first 10 visits to town from 1967 through January of 1971, but since then the Flyers have 42 wins, nine losses and nine ties at home against Chicago.

This trip has marked the first games outside of North America in the Flyers’ 52-year history. The club will return to Philadelphia tomorrow and will play their home opener against the New next Wednesday, October 9. They will then head to Western for a three-game trip October 12-16, returning on the 17th. Between their departure for Switzerland and their return from Edmonton, the Flyers will travel 13,538 miles over the span of 20 days.

The Flyers open their season one year to the day of opening their 2018-19 season in . This season is beginning 5,746 miles away from where last season started.

Carsen Twarynski and Connor Bunnaman are both poised to make their NHL debuts tonight. Twarynski was the only Flyer to appear in six of the seven preseason games (including Lausanne) and in that time posted two goals and an assist for three points. On Sept. 21 vs. the Rangers, he scored a goal, led the Flyers with seven shots on goal and recorded three hits in just 11:44 of ice time. Bunnaman appeared in five games (including Lausanne) and had a pair of goals in that time. Twarynski and Bunnaman were selected in consecutive rounds by the Flyers in the 2016 NHL , with Twarynski being taken in the third round (82nd overall) and Bunnaman in the fourth (109th overall). They both played their first professional season last year with the Flyers’ affiliate, the Phantoms.

Claude Giroux enters his eighth season as Flyers . He has served in the role for 535 games, which is second-most in franchise history to Bob Clarke’s 695. Clarke’s tenure was split into two time periods; he was captain for 542 games from 1972-79 and then relinquished the role to become a playing assistant coach. He reassumed the captaincy for in 1982 and served an additional 153 games until his retirement following the 1984 season. Giroux needs seven games to match Clarke’s total from his first stretch as captain. Giroux has appeared in 535 of a possible 540 games since taking over the captaincy in January of 2013 at the start of the shortened 2012-13 season; since that time, he is fourth in the league in points (519) and third in assists (361), and leads the league in power play points (212) while sitting second in power play assists (163). His average TOI of 20:29 per game ranks sixth among NHL forwards during that time, and his faceoff total (10701) and faceoff percentage (56.1, min. 5000 faceoffs) both rank fifth in the league during the stretch.

Carter Hart enters his first full NHL season with an opportunity to continue rewriting Flyers records. Last season, he became the youngest goaltender in team history to win his NHL debut and also to ever appear in more than two games for the team. He would become the youngest in team history to post a shutout if he does so at any point this season. Hart already has appeared in more games under the age of 21 than any other Flyers goalie. He starts this season at the age of 21 years, 50 days; every game he plays this season will add to his total games played as the youngest regular goalie in team history. The only others are two games played by Max Ouellet at the age of 19 and one for Jean-Marc Pelletier on his 21st birthday. The previous youngest goalie to appear in more than two games was , who played 17 games in the 1991-92 season starting at the age of 21 years, 237 days.
