Burgess Episode Leaves England at All-Time SPORTS SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7, 2015 Backlund scores in OT as Flames beat Flyers 2-1 CALGARY: Mikael Backlund scored 35 seconds into overtime and also had an assist to give the Calgary Flames a 2-1 victory over the skidding Philadelphia Flyers on Thursday night. With the Flames breaking in on a 2-on-1, Johnny Gaudreau’s shot was stopped by Michal Neuvirth. The rebound popped straight out, hit Backlund’s leg as he skated toward the crease and went in. Calgary improved to 3-0 in overtime, while Philadelphia fell to 1-3. Josh Jooris also scored for Calgary (4-9-1). The Flames improved to 2-5 at home. Michael Raffl scored his first of the season for Philadelphia (4-6-3). The Flyers are 0-3-1 on a five-game road trip that ends Saturday in Winnipeg. In a matchup between struggling teams - the Flames with one win in their previous six games and the Flyers winless in five - both looked tentative all night in a sloppy affair. Neither side could generate any sustained pressure and there were numerous turnovers and bobbled passes. It appeared Calgary was going to head to the second intermission with a lead for just the sec- ond time this season, but the Flyers tied it 1-all with 36 seconds left in the period. Controlling the puck behind the Flames net, Claude Giroux cen- tered a pass to Raffl, whose shot from 15 feet out fluttered past Karri Ramo, who only got a piece of it. Dating back to last season, it was the first goal in 17 games for Raffl, who scored 21 in 2014-15 as an NHL sophomore. It was a familiar storyline for Calgary, outscored 23-8 in the second period this season. Opening the scoring for the eighth time, the Flames took a 1-0 lead less than 5 minutes into the game. After serving a minor, Jooris stepped out of the penalty box just in time to scoop up the puck at center ice and charge in on a breakaway. Neuvirth stopped his initial shot and stopped Backlund on the CALGARY: Philadelphia Flyers’ Radko Gudas, right, of the Czech Republic, checks Calgary Flames’ Johnny Gaudreau rebound, but the Flyers’ goalie couldn’t control the puck and it squirt- during second-period NHL hockey game action in Calgary, Alberta, Thursday. — AP ed back out front, where Jooris whipped it in for his second of the sea- son. PREGAME NOTES 2019 TIM HORTONS NHL HERITAGE CLASSIC WINNIPEG JETS vs. CALGARY FLAMES MOSAIC STADIUM, REGINA, SASK. – OCT. 26, 2019 JETS, FLAMES FACE OFF OUTDOORS The Winnipeg Jets and Calgary Flames face off tonight in the 2019 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic (10 p.m. ET / 8 p.m. CST, CBC, SN1, CITY, TVAS2, NBCSN) – the League’s 28th regular-season outdoor game and fifth in the Heritage Classic series. The Jets and Flames each have participated in one prior outdoor game, both under the Heritage Classic umbrella. Winnipeg played host to the 2016 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at Investors Group Field, falling 3-0 to the Edmonton Oilers. Nine Jets players who appeared in that game remain with the team: Kyle Connor, Nikolaj Ehlers, Connor Hellebuyck, Patrik Laine, Adam Lowry, Josh Morrissey, Mathieu Perreault, Mark Scheifele and Blake Wheeler. Current Calgary goaltender Cam Talbot started for Edmonton in that contest, stopping all 31 shots he faced for the third shutout in outdoor NHL game history. Current Jets forward Mark Letestu scored the winning goal (while shorthanded), as a member of the Oilers. And current Flames forward Milan Lucic recorded two penalty minutes for Edmonton. Calgary served as hosts for the 2011 Tim Hortons NHL Heritage Classic at McMahon Stadium, defeating the Montreal Canadiens 4-0. Two players who appeared in that game remain with the Flames: Mikael Backlund and Mark Giordano. Overall, the Jets feature 11 players who have participated in a prior outdoor NHL game (minimum: 1 GP in 2019-20), while the Flames have four. Talbot leads that group with four such appearances, though he served as a backup goaltender for three of them (2014 SS w/ NYR [2 GP], 2019 SS w/ PHI).

Prairie to Peak A PUBLICATION OF THE ALS SOCIETY OF ALBERTA DECEMBER 2017 IN THIS ISSUE 1. Making it Possible 2. Support for Champions 3 Volunteer Appreciation 4. WALK for ALS 5. Client Services Conference 6. Community Events 7. Research Update 8. Support Groups 9. Ways of Giving Making it Possible Another hockey season has begun, and Mikael Backlund has continued to host our families at a game every month! Thank you Mikael for making these memories with the ALS community! Uncorked for ALS On Friday November 10, the Calgary Flames Foundation hosted Uncorked for ALS, raising awareness and funds for ALS research. The fundraiser was inspired by Mikael Backlund and his fiancée Frida Engstrom, who lost her mom to ALS in Sweden. We are so fortunate to have the support of the Calgary Flames community. 2 Giving Tuesday Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday, but now Giving Tuesday has taken Canada by storm by encouraging a day of charitable giving. November 28 marked the 2017 Giving Tuesday, and the ALS Society of Alberta celebrated by raising funds for the Support for Champions program. This program allows children whose parents are affected by ALS to participate in childhood activities that may not be available to them due to the immense financial burden of ALS. My son, Owen, received money for his basketball season this year from the Support for Champions program. His father has been “living with ALS for the past five years. Owen loves playing basketball, skiing, biking, snowboarding and playing video games. When he is visiting his dad, he makes paper airplanes to hang in his room.

  • Buffalo Sabres Digital Press
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips October 20, 2016 Monahan scores in OT, Flames top Sabres Associated Press October 19, 2016 CALGARY, Alberta (AP) — Sean Monahan's overtime goal brought a sense of relief to the Calgary Flames' locker room. Monahan scored 2:26 into overtime, giving Calgary its first win of the season, 4-3 over the Buffalo Sabres on Tuesday night. The 22-year-old made a nifty move and beat Robin Lehner over his shoulder for his first of the season after being set up alone in front by Johnny Gaudreau. "Everybody needed that goal, and when I say everybody, probably the fans, the coaches and Mony himself," said Glen Gulutzan, who earned his first victory as Calgary's coach. After dropping back-to-back games in Edmonton and then losing in overtime in Vancouver on Saturday, the Flames had pressure building on a team expected to take a giant step forward in 2016-17. "When you win, it brings confidence," Monahan said. "As a group, it's home ice and the way that we battled back and found a way to win is big for our team." Matthew Tkachuk got his first NHL goal, and Michael Frolik and Micheal Ferland also scored for Calgary. Zemgus Girgensons, Ryan O'Reilly and Marcus Foligno scored for Buffalo. Calgary trailed 2-1 entering the third period but tied it at 1:10. Foligno's turnover in his own corner was taken by Ferland, who darted straight to the net and lifted a backhand into the top corner. Foligno made up for his error on his next shift, with a nifty inside-out move to sidestep Deryk Engelland and then flicking a high shot past Chad Johnson on the glove side.

  • Evaluating Team-Level Pace of Play in Ice Hockey Using Spatio-Temporal Possession Data
Playing Fast Not Loose: Evaluating team-level pace of play in ice hockey using spatio-temporal possession data David Yu*, Christopher Boucher, Luke Bornn, Mehrsan Javan SPORTLOGiQ, Montreal, Quebec, Canada *Email: [email protected] 1. Introduction Pace of play is an important characteristic in ice hockey as well as other team-invasion sports. While in basketball pace has traditionally been defined as the number of possessions per 48 minutes, here we focus on pace and movement within a possession, leveraging the tremendous advancements in the capture of spatio-temporal data in team sports in recent years [1]. While much attention has been focused on speed and distance covered at the player level, spatio-temporal datasets also allow for more granular definitions of team-level pace of play such as measures of the speed between successive events or the speed of a possession as a whole. While ice hockey has always been one of the fastest-moving sports, rule and tactical changes in the past 15 years, such as the removal of the rule limiting 2-line passes and the stricter enforcement of obstruction/holding infractions, have placed further emphasis on pace. At the start of the 2016-17 NHL season, Paul Maurice, head coach of the Winnipeg Jets said: "This game is just so fast now... I've seen fast players and I've seen fast teams, it's the first time I thought we had a fast league. The speed, to me, is the one thing that’s changed more than anything. Our team, and the league as well, is as fast as I’ve ever seen it.” [2] Given the emphasis on pace in hockey in recent years, it is surprising that a recent study found a slight negative correlation between various metrics of forward attacking pace and offensive output such as shots and goals [3].
