TONIGHT’S STORY-LINES This is the first matchup of the season between the Flames and Sabres. These two teams split last season’s series with one win apiece.

This is a cross-conference match-up; The Flames are currently 10-6-2 against the Eastern Conference this season.

POINT STREAK: The Flames now have points in eight straight games which included a seven game winning streak that got snapped over the weekend. This is a season-high point streak for the Flames as they sit tied in the third spot in the Pacific with Los Angeles, both teams have 55 points. Over this point streak the top-line of Johnny Gaudreau (2G – 11A), Sean Monahan (4G – 6A), and Micheal Ferland (4G – 5A) have combined for 34 points.

HELLO BUFFALO: The Calgary Flames and Buffalo Sabres had two close match-ups last season with each team earning a victory. Matthew Tkachuk (2G – 1A) and Mark Giordano (0G – 3A) both lead the way for the Flames in the season series against the Sabres with three points. One of Tkachuk’s two goals against the Sabres was his first career NHL goal which he scored at the 4:52 mark of the third period which would ultimately be the tying goal that sent the game to overtime in which Sean Monahan found twine for a Flames victory.

DEFENSIVE MINDED: The Flames haven’t allowed more than three goals since December 4th against . The team is being led by great defense and a hot goaltender in Mike Smith. Smith has only allowed in one goal in back-to-back games and hasn’t seen his save percentage in a game go below .900 since December 14th against San Jose.

LOOKING AHEAD: The Flames will have one more home game after tonight before they head out on the road in a back-to-back situation. The Flames play at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Wednesday before heading out to Edmonton for a meeting with the Oilers the next day. Then the Flames will have a bit of a break for the All-Star game, except Johnny Gaudreau who will be representing the Flames in Tampa Bay.

DID YOU KNOW? The Flames are 50-0-2 when leading after the second period over the last two seasons.

The Flames are 14-3-0-0 when Johnny Gaudreau has two-or-more points and 11-1-0-0 when Sean Monahan has two or more points.

The Hockey Hall of Famer and former Sabres defenseman is the seventh alumnus to serve as the team’s head coach.

Housley joined the Sabres after helping to guide the Nashville Predators to their first ever Stanley Cup Final appearance in 2016. Named an assistant coach on May 22, 2013, Housley was a driving force behind one of the NHL’s best defensive groups throughout his tenure.

A native of South St. Paul, Minnesota, Housley began his coaching career in 2004 as head coach of Stillwater Area High School in Minnesota. During his nine seasons at the helm, Housley turned around the school’s program while also accepting numerous opportunities to coach for Team USA at the international level.
