FLYERS VS. RANGERS

Tonight marks the first of eight games between the clubs this season. The original start of this series was scheduled for this past Sunday; that game is currently TBD as to its makeup date.

Thu. February 18 vs. N.Y. Rangers 7:00 PM Wed. February 24 vs. N.Y. Rangers 7:00 PM Mon. March 15 @ N.Y. Rangers 7:00 PM Wed. March 17 @ N.Y. Rangers 7:30 PM Thu. March 25 vs. N.Y. Rangers 7:00 PM Sat. March 27 vs. N.Y. Rangers 1:00 PM Fri. April 23 @ N.Y. Rangers 7:00 PM TBD @ N.Y. Rangers TBD

The Flyers and Rangers have a somewhat extensive history of large season series. This is the sixth time the two teams will meet eight times in a season – they did so in 1978-79 and 1981-82, and again in three consecutive seasons from 2005-06 through 2007-08. They also faced one another seven times a year for the decade-long alignment from 1982-83 through 1992-93 that also saw them take on several other teams seven times per season.

Last year the clubs only met three times due to the final meeting being cancelled by the COVID stoppage. That was the first time since the Flyers joined the league in 1967 that the two clubs had met fewer than four times in a season.

The Flyers are 9-2 against the Rangers over the past three seasons after recording a perfect 3-0 record last year. It was only the second time in franchise history they had a 1.000 points percentage in a given season against the Rangers, joining the 1984-85 team that went 7-0 in the season series. It was also the first time since a 4-0-0-1 season series in 2000-01 that they did not record at least one regulation loss to the Blueshirts.

LAST GAME

Sunday, February 7, 2021 – Flyers 7, Washington 4 at Capital One Arena: The Flyers scored two late goals to tilt a back-and-forth affair in their direction for good, taking a 7-4 decision in Washington. The Capitals opened up a 2-0 lead on first-period goals by Alex Ovechkin and , but two tallies by Scott Laughton with 1:27 left in the first and 2:29 gone in the second erased that lead. After Ovechkin made it 3-2 at the 4:08 mark, the Flyers re-tied the score on a goal by Robert Hagg at 7:50 and then pulled ahead when James van Riemsdyk scored with 3:24 left to play in the frame, but Nick Backstrom knotted things at 4-4 with just under 57 seconds remaining in the period. The Flyers shut the door from there and went ahead for good when Sean Couturier scored 31 seconds into the third period; Laughton went on to add insurance when he completed his first career hat trick with 2:09 to play, and Couturier later potted an empty-netter to finish off the scoring. Carter Hart turned away 33 of 37 to secure the win. Vitek Vanek started for Washington and made 10 saves on 14 shots in 36:36 before stepping aside for Craig Anderson, who was saddled with the loss after making six saves on eight shots in 22:45. Stars of the Game: 1 – Scott Laughton; 2 – Alex Ovechkin; 3 – Sean Couturier.

Scott Laughton recorded his first NHL hat trick. He had five career two-goal games before today.

Joel Farabee was a plus-3 and had three assists, marking his third game of the season of three or more points. Per NHL Stats and Information, he is the first Flyer to record three or more games in a season with at least three points before his 21st birthday since did so during the 2001- 02 season.

Sean Couturier recorded two goals and an assist in his first game back in the lineup after a 10-game absence, not counting Game 2 of the season where he left with his injury after one 45-second . He was a plus-4 in 15:47 of ice time.

Michael Raffl was also a plus-4, tying a career high set on April 7, 2018 vs. NYR.

James van Riemsdyk had a goal and an assist to extend his scoring streak to seven games. He has four goals and nine assists for 13 points in the run. He has seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points through the first 13 games of the season.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers are 8-3-2 for 18 points through their first 13 games. It’s the 15th time the Flyers have had at least that many points through 13 games, but the first since they went 9-3-0-1 for 19 points through the first 13 games of the 2005-06 season.

The Flyers are averaging 3.54 goals per game, the fourth highest average in the league. They’ve reached this mark despite averaging 23.7 shots per game, which is the lowest per-game average in the NHL. They are 30th in shots allowed per game at 33.2, but rank 21st in goals against per game at 3.08.

Scott Laughton’s hat trick in the Flyers’ last game on Feb. 7 was the Flyers’ third of the season through just 13 games. The only other time in franchise history that’s happened was in the 1984-85 season, when and Illka Sinisalo each had a hat trick in a 13-2 win over Vancouver on 10/18/84 (game 4) and followed up with a four-goal game on 10/25/84 vs. St. Louis (game 8). The franchise record for four hat tricks is 17 games during the 1994-95 season, when the team registered three hat tricks in the first 16 games (Josef Beranek, John LeClair, ) before LeClair added a fourth in game 17. The Flyers haven’t had more than four hat tricks in any season since 2007-08, when they had seven.

James van Riemsdyk has seven goals and 11 assists for 18 points through the first 13 games. At the time of the Flyers’ season pause, that was good for fourth in the NHL in scoring; entering last night’s games, van Riemsdyk ranked 12th. He continues to rank second in the NHL with five power play goals. van Riemsdyk is off to the best start of his career, surpassing his rookie season when he had 15 points (4-11-15) through his first 13 games. He enters tonight’s contest with 499 career points.

Ivan Provorov is averaging 26:00 of ice time per game this season, which ranks third in the NHL. He has two goals and five assists for seven points, and has picked up three of those assists on the power play.

Maxim Sushko is slated to make his NHL debut tonight. The 22-year-old forward will become the first native of Belarus to appear in a game for the Flyers. Sushko was a fourth-round pick of the Flyers in the 2017 NHL Entry and is in his second professional season after appearing in 53 games for the Flyers’ AHL affiliate, the Phantoms, last year. He started this season on loan to Dinamo Minsk in the KHL, where he had two goals and three assists for 30 points. He would become the third member of the Flyers’ 2017 draft class to appear in a game for the team, joining Nolan Patrick and Morgan Frost.

Flyers Claude Giroux will see his consecutive game streak come to an end tonight at 328 games due to his stay on the NHL COVID protocol list. This will be only the 17th game Giroux has missed since joining the Flyers on a full-time basis on December 26, 2008. He has appeared in 900 of a possible 916 games since then.

Giroux has appeared in every game for the club since the start of the 2016-17 season, as has Ivan Provorov, and the two were tied for the sixth-longest active streak in the NHL; that ranking will now belong solely to Provorov. Giroux has not missed a game since the final game of the 2015-16 season on April 10, 2016. Already this season, Giroux has passed Bob Clarke for most games played as Flyers captain (611) and has become the third player in franchise history to appear in 900 games for the club, joining Clarke (1144) and Bill Barber (903).

With Jake Voracek also among the Flyers on the COVID protocol list, tonight’s game will mark the first time in just under 12 years that the Flyers are taking the ice for a game with neither Giroux nor Voracek in the lineup. The last time that happened was March 1, 2009 at New Jersey, which came while Giroux was on his final AHL loan to the then-. One of the two players has appeared in each of the 889 games the Flyers have played since then.
