WAVELAND, MISSISSIPPI, NOVEMBER 1964: DEATH OF SNCC, BIRTH OF RADICALISM University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire: History Department History 489: Research Seminar Professor Robert Gough Professor Selika Ducksworth – Lawton, Cooperating Professor Matthew Pronley University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire May 2008 Abstract: The Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC, pronounced Snick) was a nonviolent direct action organization that participated in the civil rights movement in the 1960s. After the Freedom Summer, where hundreds of northern volunteers came to participate in voter registration drives among rural blacks, SNCC underwent internal upheaval. The upheaval was centered on the future direction of SNCC. Several staff meetings occurred in the fall of 1964, none more important than the staff retreat in Waveland, Mississippi, in November. Thirty-seven position papers were written before the retreat in order to reflect upon the question of future direction of the organization; however, along with answers about the future direction, these papers also outlined and foreshadowed future trends in radical thought. Initially I discovered SNCC though Taylor Branch’s epic volumes on the Civil Right Movements in the 1960s. Further reading revealed the role of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC, pronounced Snick) in the Civil Right Movement and opened the doors into an effective and controversial organization. -

FREEDOM FAITH Produced, Directed and Written by Alice Markowitz Associate Producer: Tanayi Seabrook NARRATOR: For generations in the south, black churches offered refuge to the community but stopped short of challenging the powerful forces of segregation and white supremacy. Then, everything changed. By the 1960’s, the faithful would gamble life and limb for equality. JAMES H. CONE: Here is the church going out into the world, leaving those buildings and walking the street, transforming the world. NARRATOR: Their weapon would be Christian love. And their faith would be tested. BERNARD LAFAYETTE: Could you love someone who slapped you? Could you love someone who punched you in the nose? Someone who gave you a black eye? NARRATOR: But could the power of love conquer the forces of hatred? NARRATOR: By the 1960’s the faithful would gamble life and limb. PRATHIA HALL: The last time I stood in Brown Chapel, the stench of tear gas was in the air. Blood covered the heads and the faces of those who had been beaten bloody by the clubs of Jim Clark’s posse and the so-called Alabama State Safety Patrol. NARRATOR: In the early 1960s, Prathia Hall came South, on a momentous journey of faith. Introduction And those people who are working to bring into being the dream of democracy are not the agitators. They are not the dangerous people in America. They are not the un-American people. They are people who are doing more for America than anybody that we can point to. And I submit to you that it may well be that the Negro is God’s instrument to save the soul of America. Martin Luther King, Jr. 2 January 1961 When forty-three-year-old John F. Kennedy took office on 20 January 1961 as the youngest elected American president, Martin Luther King Jr. had just turned thirty- two but had already risen to national prominence as a result of his leadership role in the Montgomery bus boycott that ended four years earlier. Early in 1957 he had become founding president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) and subsequently was in great demand as a speaker throughout the nation. His understanding of Gandhian principles had deepened as a result of his 1959 trip to India, but, during the following year, college student sit-in protesters, rather than King, became the vanguard of a sustained civil disobedience campaign. Having already weathered a near-fatal stabbing and six arrests, King was uncertain about how best to support the new militancy. Moving to Atlanta to be near SCLC head- quarters and to serve as co-pastor with his father at Ebenezer Baptist Church, he had assumed a wide range of responsibilities. He relied on his wife, Coretta Scott, to take the lead role of raising their two small children with a third due any day. -

Women in the Modern Civil Rights Movement Introduction Research Questions Who comes to mind when considering the Modern Civil Rights Movement (MCRM) during 1954 - 1965? Is it one of the big three personalities: Martin Luther to Consider King Jr., Malcolm X, or Rosa Parks? Or perhaps it is John Lewis, Stokely Who were some of the women Carmichael, James Baldwin, Thurgood Marshall, Ralph Abernathy, or Medgar leaders of the Modern Civil Evers. What about the names of Septima Poinsette Clark, Ella Baker, Diane Rights Movement in your local town, city or state? Nash, Daisy Bates, Fannie Lou Hamer, Ruby Bridges, or Claudette Colvin? What makes the two groups different? Why might the first group be more familiar than What were the expected gender the latter? A brief look at one of the most visible events during the MCRM, the roles in 1950s - 1960s America? March on Washington, can help shed light on this question. Did these roles vary in different racial and ethnic communities? How would these gender roles On August 28, 1963, over 250,000 men, women, and children of various classes, effect the MCRM? ethnicities, backgrounds, and religions beliefs journeyed to Washington D.C. to march for civil rights. How the Atlanta Daily World Covered the Struggle for African American Rights from 1945 to 1985
Abstract Title of Dissertation: THE CAUTIOUS CRUSADER: HOW THE ATLANTA DAILY WORLD COVERED THE STRUGGLE FOR AFRICAN AMERICAN RIGHTS FROM 1945 TO 1985 Name: Maria E. Odum-Hinmon Doctor of Philosophy, 2005 Dissertation Directed By: Prof. Maurine Beasley, Ph. D. Philip Merrill College of Journalism This dissertation is a study of the Atlanta Daily World, a conservative black newspaper founded in 1928, that covered the civil rights struggle in ways that reflected its orientation to both democratic principles and practical business concerns. The World became the most successful black daily newspaper in the nation after becoming a daily in 1932 and maintaining that status for nearly four decades. This dissertation details how this newspaper chronicled the simultaneous push for civil rights, better conditions in the black community, and recognition of black achievement during the volatile period of social change following World War II. Using descriptive, thematic analysis and in-depth interviews, this dissertation explores the question: How did the Atlanta Daily World crusade for the rights of African Americans against a backdrop of changing times, particularly during the crucial forty- year period between 1945 and 1985? The study contends that the newspaper carried out its crusade by highlighting information and events important to the black community from the perspective of the newspaper’s strong-willed publisher, C. A. Scott, and it succeeded by relying on Scott family members and employees who worked long hours for low wages. The study shows that the World fought against lynching and pushed for voting rights in the 1940s and 1950s. The newspaper eschewed sit-in demonstrations to force eateries to desegregate in the 1960s because they seemed dangerous and counterproductive when the college students wound up in jail rather than in school. -

Synopsis Arc of Justice is a saga of courage and resilience spanning five decades. It takes its title from a favorite saying of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Called upon to offer solace and encouragement to people weary of the slow pace of social progress, he would often quote from a sermon delivered by an Abolitionist preacher a dozen years before the Civil War: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.” The film begins in the 1960s as African American protestors fill the streets and jails in Albany, Georgia, opposing racial discrimination and fighting for the right to vote. Men and women who participate in this political struggle later turn their energies to expanding economic opportunity and decent housing for people long denied of both. Doing so, they pioneer a new model of grassroots development and empowerment that has now spread across the globe: the community land trust (CLT). In 1969, these civil rights activists establish New Communities Inc. (NCI) and the next year purchase nearly 6000 acres of land near Albany, the largest tract of land owned by African Americans at the time. But their plan for creating new enterprises and building hundreds of homes on community-owned land is blocked by Georgia’s segregationist Governor, Lester Maddox. -

Freedom Rides of 1961 Excerpted from “History & Timeline” The First Ride (1961) In December of 1960, the Supreme Court rules in the Boynton case (Boynton v. Virginia), that segregation in inter-state travel is illegal, and that as a matter of Federal law integrated travel on inter- state buses and trains is a legal right. Separate white and colored toilets and dining rooms for inter-state travelers are no longer allowed, travelers have the right to use whatever facilities they choose, and sit wherever they wish. By early '61, the Rock Hill SC sit-in movement has run into a stone wall of racist resistance, and CORE activist Tom Gaither proposes a “Freedom Ride” through Rock Hill and elsewhere in the Deep South to test and implement the Boynton decision. On May 4, CORE Director James Farmer leads 13 Freedom Riders (7 Black, 6 white) out of Washington on Greyhound and Trailways buses. The plan is to ride through Virginia, the Carolinas, Georgia, Alabama, and Mississippi. Their final destination is New Orleans, Louisiana. Most of the Riders are from CORE — many in their 40s and 50s — and two are young students from SNCC. Little trouble is encountered as they travel through Virginia and North Carolina, but John Lewis, Al Bigelow, and Genevieve Hughes are beaten in Rock Hill, SC, and some of the Riders are arrested in Charlotte NC, and Winnsboro SC. Anniston & Birmingham AL White political leaders in Georgia choose not to defy the Supreme Court ruling by arresting the Riders. Nor do they incite racist hysteria or mob violence.
