Die Zentralbibliothek zeigt eine Werkschau der Grafikkünstlerin Warja Lavater (1913–2007) Unter dem Titel «Sing-Song-Signs & Folded Stories» würdigt die Zentralbibliothek das Gesamtwerk der Schweizer Grafikerin, Buchkünstlerin und Malerin Warja Lavater, deren Nachlass sie hütet. Die Schau erstreckt sich über mehrere Ausstellungsräume der ZB und vermittelt einen Überblick über die vielfältigen Schaffensperioden der Künstlerin. Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte Warja Lavater mit ihrem Künstlerbuch «Wilhelm Tell», das 1962 vom Museum of Modern Art in New York und von der Basilius Presse in Basel herausgebracht wurde. «Wilhelm Tell» ist neben zahlreichen weiteren Werken in der Schatzkammer der ZB zu sehen. Diese Faltbücher enthalten keine gewöhnlichen Illustrationen, sondern Bildfolgen von abstrakten Zeichen. Dafür prägte Lavater den Begriff «Folded Stories». Noch bevor die Kunstwelt von Artists’ Books sprach, hatte sie das Buch als künstlerisches Experiment für sich definiert. Diese Form der Zeichenschrift erprobte sie dann über viele Jahre in den unterschiedlichsten Medien und Formaten. So sind in der Ausstellung auch Filme, Stoff-Bücher und Gemälde zu sehen. Nach ihrer Ausbildung an der Kunstgewerbeschule Zürich gründete die junge Warja Lavater mit ihrem späteren Lebenspartner Gottfried Honegger zunächst ein Grafik-Atelier in Zürich. Aus dieser Zeit sind in der Ausstellung frühe Gebrauchsgrafiken Lavaters zu sehen. Beispielsweise entwarf sie das Logo mit den drei Schlüsseln für den Schweizerischen Bankverein (heute UBS). Im Foyer der ZB steht ein grossformatiges Wandbild, ein Teil der «Linie», die Lavater für die Schweizerische Ausstellung für Frauenarbeit SAFFA 1958 gestaltete. Dieses Werk schlägt die Brücke zum Ausstellungsteil im Lesesaal, wo im Themenraum Turicensia der Fokus auf dem Leben Warja Lavaters in Zürich liegt. -

Chapel Hill 2016 Approved by: Gregory Flaxman Erin Carlston Eric Downing Andrew Perrin Pamela Cooper © 2016 Lindsay Rebecca Starck ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Lindsay Rebecca Starck: “News that stays news”: Transformations of Literature, Gossip, and Community in Modernity (Under the direction of Gregory Flaxman and Erin Carlston) Recent decades have demonstrated a renewed interest in gossip research from scholars in psychology, sociology, and anthropology who argue that gossip—despite its popular reputation as trivial, superficial “women’s talk”—actually serves crucial social and political functions such as establishing codes of conduct and managing reputations. My dissertation draws from and builds upon this contemporary interdisciplinary scholarship by demonstrating how the modernists incorporated and transformed the popular gossip of mass culture into literature, imbuing it with a new power and purpose. The foundational assumption of my dissertation is that as the nature of community changed at the turn of the twentieth century, so too did gossip. Although usually considered to be a socially conservative force that serves to keep social outliers in line, I argue that modernist writers transformed gossip into a potent, revolutionary tool with which modern individuals could advance and promote the progressive ideologies of social, political, and artistic movements. Ultimately, the gossip of key American expatriates (Henry James, Djuna Barnes, Janet Flanner, and Ezra Pound) became a mode of exchanging and redefining creative and critical values for the artists and critics who would follow them. -

Warja Lavaters Folded Stories. Werkgenese und Wirkungsästhetik CAROL JANA RIBI Das Leporello war für die Schweizer Künstlerin Warja Lavater (1913– 2007) ein künstlerisches Medium, mit dem sie sich zeitlebens auseinan- dergesetzt hat. In ihrem Nachlass, der sich in der Graphischen Sammlung der Zentralbibliothek Zürich befindet, sind über hundert Künstlerbücher nachgewiesen, darunter Originale, Skizzen und Entwürfe. Die frühesten fünf publizierten Leporellos, die Lavater „Folded Stories“ nannte, er- schienen 1962 bei der Basilius Presse. Neben den literarischen Vorlagen wie der Fabel „Die Grille und die Ameise“ nach La Fontaine oder der Legende „Wilhelm Tell“ sind es alltägliche Beobachtungen, die den Werken ihre Thematik geben. So sind zunächst erschienen: Wilhelm Tell, Die Grille und die Ameise, Match, Party, Promenade en Ville (alle 1962), sowie Raub der Sabinerinnen, Leidenschaft und Vernunft und Der gute Vorsatz ist blau (alle 1964). Das Leporello Wilhelm Tell ist 1962 auch vom Junior Council des Museum of Modern Art auf Englisch veröffent- licht worden und hat 1964 ebenda eine zweite Auflage erfahren.1 Ab Mit- te der 1960er Jahre publizierte der renommierte Pariser Kunstverlag Adrien Maeght Editeur ihre Künstlerbücher. Die bei Maeght erschiene- nen Märchen nach Charles Perrault – Rotkäppchen (1965), Die Geschich- te vom Glück (1968), Schneewittchen (1974), Aschenputtel (1976), Däumling (1979) sowie Dornröschen (1982) – sind die wohl bekanntes- ten Werke Lavaters, wenn auch nur ein kleiner Ausschnitt ihres von the- matischer Vielfalt und gestalterischem Ideenreichtum geprägten Œuvres. Diese sechs sowie zwei weitere Märchen (La Lune Enchantée von 1973 und Tur di di von 1971) sind 1982 in einer aufwendigen Gesamtausgabe 1 Abbildungen sowie Kurzbeschreibungen zu Wilhelm Tell und La Promenade en Ville finden sich in Carol Ribi: Spielräume des Graphischen. -

Les prises de vue natives, sous vitrines, tentent de retenir la fugacité des formes. En l’imprimant sur dazibao1 l’artiste revendique ce langage universel, alternative à la "guerre des écritures ". G.Bachelard dans "L’eau et les rêves, essai sur l’imagination de la matière" défini le travail de cette artiste de la manière suivante : "La méditation d’une matière éduque une imagination ouverte... Ainsi l’eau, par ses reflets, double le monde, double les choses. Elle double aussi le rêveur, non pas simplement comme une vaine image, mais en l’engageant dans une nouvelle expérience onirique." Apres le récit de son cheminement, Nadine Cabarrot lira quelques-uns de ses haïkus2 de voyage pour rendre leur profondeur de champ, géographique et humaine, a ses images. 24 Literary Journalism Studies, Vol. 8, No. 2, Fall 2016 25 The Mille Collines of Marie Gevers: From Reportage to Literary Text Paul Aron Université libre de Bruxelles, Belgium F.N.R.S. – Fonds National de la Recherche Scientifique, Belgium Abstract: Little known today beyond the country of her birth, Marie Gevers (1883–1975) is a major Belgian writer. Her interest in the everyday life of farming communities, her attachment to the things and people of her region, and a heightened sense of the rhythms of nature explain the success of her books. As a literary journalist, she also penned articles and reportages for newspapers such as “La Descente du Congo” (1952), Des mille collines aux neuf volcans. Ruanda (1953), and Plaisir des parallèles. Essai sur un voyage (1957). The relevance of Gevers’s contributions to Belgian colonial literature has received hardly any attention, yet it is essential to analyze these texts in their particular contexts. Years of public banishment because of her minor involvement with the country’s occupying forces during the Second World War prompted Gevers to take some distance and spend time in Rwanda as of 1948. Three years after Liberation, the Cold War was at its height, and majority opinion in Belgium had come down firmly behind the Truman Doctrine. However, United Nations criticism of Belgium’s management of its colonies was not welcome, and the country reaffirmed the role it had to play both in Congo and Rwanda. Therefore, Gevers’s African texts should be read as part of a general and national argument supporting the benefits of colonization. -
