Martin 2017 ABSTRACT OF DISSERTATION (B)ORDERING TEXAS: THE REPRESENTATION OF VIOLENCE, NATIONALISM, AND MASCULINITIES IN U.S.-MEXICO BORDERLAND NOVELS (1985-2012) The present project explores the narrative construction of masculinities, violence, and nationalism in three U.S.-Mexico borderland novels written by U.S., Mexican, and Mexican-American writers: Caballero (1930s-40s, pub.1996) by Jovita González and Eve Raleigh; Blood Meridian (1985) by Cormac McCarthy; and Texas: La gran ladronería en el lejano norte (2012) by Carmen Boullosa. Through the scope of masculinity, gender, and (post)colonial studies, this project examines how these authors incorporate hegemonic masculine archetypes and their attendant forms of violence (physical, economic, and epistemic) so as to interrogate claims to identity and national belonging along the Texas-Mexico border, against the backdrop of war and U.S. imperialism. In their roles as builders and/or defenders of an expanding nation-state, the male characters studied here enact distinct forms of violence in order to normalize their positions of power and further encode their claims to political and cultural hegemony. Considered together, the texts studied here demonstrate how the intersection of nationalism, masculinity construction, and particular forms of violence converge within an Anglo hegemonic masculinity to the detriment of Mexicans, non-white borderland individuals, and women--all of whom stand at the periphery of this imagined national (male) community.     Donald Trump Shoots the Match1 Sharon Mazer The day I realized it can be smart to be shallow was, for me, a deep experience. —Donald J. Trump (2004; in Remnick 2017:19) I don’t care if it’s real or not. Kill him! Kill him! 2 He’s currently President of the USA, but a scant 10 years ago, Donald Trump stepped into the squared circle, facing off against WWE owner and quintessential heel Mr. McMahon3 in the “Battle of the Billionaires” (WrestleMania XXIII). The stakes were high. The loser would have his head shaved by the winner. (Spoiler alert: Trump won.) Both Trump and McMahon kept their suits on—oversized, with exceptionally long ties—in a way that made their heads appear to hover, disproportionately small, over their bulky (Trump) and bulked up (McMahon) bodies. As avatars of capitalist, patriarchal power, they left the heavy lifting to the gleamingly exposed, hypermasculinist bodies of their pro-wrestler surrogates. McMahon performed an expert heel turn: a craven villain, egging the audience to taunt him as a clueless, elitist frontman as he did the job of casting Trump as an (unlikely) babyface, the crowd’s champion. For his part, Trump seemed more mark than smart. Where McMahon and the other wrestlers were working around him, like ham actors in an outsized play, Trump was shooting the match: that is, not so much acting naturally as neglecting to act at all. He soaked up the cheers, stalked the ring, took a fall, threw a sucker punch, and claimed victory as if he (and he alone) had fought the good fight (WWE 2013b).

    Introduction Philip E. Steinberg In the weeks leading up to the 2016 US presidential election, Political Geography received two unsolicited guest editorials opining on the surging popularity of Donald Trump and, more broadly, the movement that he represented. In one editorial, Banu Gökariksel and Sara Smith associated the Trump phenomenon with the reassertion of a masculinist politics wherein the violent, white, male body is seen as the normative political figure. In the other, Sam Page and Jason Dittmer also focused on the embodied nature of Trump’s popularity, but they locate this in a complicated system in which oppositional tendencies also have momentum, and thus they end their editorial with a fairly optimistic assertion about the ways in which the openings made possible by Trump might lead to a counter-revolution of sorts, wherein the antinomies that increasingly characterise politics in the United States (and elsewhere) are overthrown. After the election, we received two more unsolicited guest editorials reflecting on the topic. In one, Alan Ingram paired the Trump election with Brexit referendum that had been held five months earlier, and places both within an analytical framework inspired by the Deleuzian concept of the ‘machine’. In the second editorial, Natalie Koch took a step back from the election to avert her gaze away from Trump and toward the ways in which critical pundits and scholars were understanding Trump as bringing ‘authoritarianism’ to the United States. While Koch did not necessarily disagree with the analysis of Trump’s rule as ‘authoritarian’ she noted how surprise about his popularity was rooted in a lingering American exceptionalism that clouded the analysis of the left and well as the right.

This thesis examines the relationship between the three themes, arguing that McCarthy empowers the natural world with a spiritual significance that may be experienced by humanity, but not completely understood or expressed. Man, being what Kenneth Burke describes as the “symbol-using” animal, cannot express reality through language without distorting it. Language also leads to the commodification of the natural world by allowing man to reevaluate the reality around him based on factors of his own devising.

This dissertation examines the depiction of gambling and other games of chance, as well as financially-speculative endeavors, in eight texts from the mid-nineteenth century throughout Hispanic America, including José Joaquín Fernández de Lizardi’s El Periquillo Sarniento (1816), Eduardo Gutiérrez’s Juan Moreira (1879), Rosario Orrego’s Alberto el jugador (1860), Teresa González de Fanning’s Regina (1886), Gertrudis Gómez de Avellaneda’s Sab (1841), Alberto Blest Gana’s Martín Rivas (1862), José Ramón de Betancourt’s Una feria de la caridad en 183… (1841, 1858), and José Milla’s Los Nazarenos (1867).   • The Border Paradigm in Cormac Mccarthy's The
    THE BORDER PARADIGM IN CORMAC MCCARTHY’S THE CROSSING ISABEL SOTO In this essay I explore various concepts in Cormac McCarthy’s The Crossing: the border, space and geography. I argue firstly that the border or frontier is the organizing principle, generating most, if not all, the tex- tual strategies at the levels of discourse, theme and plot. These strategies frequently involve structures of doubleness mediated literally or figura- tively by the border paradigm. Obvious examples can be located in such archetypal binaries as male-female, life-death, past-present. Most nota- bly, perhaps, large portions of McCarthy’s text alternate English and a form of Spanish defined by, or constitutive of, the United States-Mexican border. I argue secondly, therefore, that the border is closely bound to the concept of space. McCarthy’s characters will have to negotiate various sites or spaces: human, natural and otherworldly. Thirdly, I argue that the constructs of the border and space articulate a variation, or perhaps unre- solved, version of Heraclitus’ notion of geography as fate. Thus, in the mythical contours of the journeys McCarthy’s characters undertake, ge- ography does not so much constitute fate as propose experience: always unfinished, always in the making. Cormac McCarthy’s Border Trilogy (1992-1998) 1 could be described argua- bly as a cycle of coming-of-age novels, characterized by such requisite initiation procedures as leaving home, becoming orphaned, confronting death, acquiring sexual knowledge, and so on. Perhaps a more interesting, and productive, focus might be on how those rites of passage are articulated or, indeed, whether they are fully realized.

The test on the works of fiction will be primarily objective rather than interpretive, and it will include quotation identification, plot and setting points, and character descriptions. The test on the vocabulary will be matching. The point of the test is to ensure that you have read actively and studied the vocabulary so that you can use the works and words immediately.
