Regional and social differences in Coronary Heart Disease 2008 Peter Scarborough, Steven Allender, Viv Peto and Mike Rayner British Heart Foundation Health Promotion Research Group Department of Public Health, University of Oxford British Heart Foundation Statistics Database www.heartstats.org Foreword The British Heart Foundation is pleased to present the first edition of Regional and social differences in coronary heart disease statistics. Over the past decade the UK has seen substantial improvements in national statistics for coronary heart disease for which all involved should feel rightly proud. However, national averages can hide as much as they reveal and the data provided in this issue point to major geographical and social differences in the likelihood of developing heart disease. The statistics do more than just provide numbers, they point to social deprivation as a primary driver of the continuing epidemic of coronary heart disease. This is wholly consistent with clinical experience. 25 years ago our coronary care units were full of relatively young, wealthy, overweight, smoking, business executives. This is no longer the case. Today you are more likely to meet such people in the local, smoke-free gym or out jogging. The message is clear – the scourge of coronary heart disease can be beaten. The task now is to bring about the necessary changes to avoid heart disease in the rest of the UK population. The data contained in Regional and social differences in coronary heart disease statistics will provide those responsible for improving the UK’s heart health with the ammunition they need to target their resources to those who most need them. -

He informed members that Keir was no longer the maintaining agent in Cumbria and this was now Highways England. Members noted that a number of key colleagues from Keir had transferred to Highways England and that there would be a significant change in the delivery of services in the future. The Sub-Group were informed that a Route Strategy Refresh would be undertaken following a call for evidence during the summer where high level issues had been identified in the Barrow district. -

They tend to be based on civil parish areas (like Colton) or groups of parishes. It is essential that that such Plans properly reflect the values, opinions, needs and aspirations of the community, and that they should be community-led, facilitated by the Parish Council. Principal authorities (in Colton’s case: Cumbria County Council and South Lakeland District Council) and planning authorities (in Colton’s case: the Lake District National Park Authority), are increasingly using these Plans to guide local policy and inform planning decisions. The purpose of this Plan is to set out policies and action plans for the future of the Parish. To this end, invitations to join a Community Plan Working Group brought together people from all three wards of our large rural parish, including parish councillors and the parish clerk. Working group members and contributors are listed in Annex A. Background Colton Civil Parish is a sparsely populated rural area of about 20 square miles within the southern part of the Lake District National Park, spanning three valleys running north-south: Coniston Water and the Crake Valley to the west, Rusland in the centre and Windermere and the River Leven in the east. -
A History of Kents Bank
A History of Kents Bank. Kents Bank lies to the west of Grange over Sands and until the middle of the 19th century it comprised a few buildings on the shore where the cross bay route across Morecambe Bay met the land. Abbot Hall and Kents Bank House, then known as Kents Bank Hotel which was operating as a lodging house, stood on opposite sides of the road at the base of the hill now known as Kirkhead Road. A railway station had opened in August 1857 on the "Ulverstone to Lancaster" railway running along the edge of the shore. Part way up the hill on Kirkhead Road was Laneside Farm. Further along the coast, towards Grange, Guides Farm sat on the shore at the bottom of the road now known as Carter Road. Seawood House was above Guide Farm at the top of the steep hill with access from Carter Road. The two roads climbed northwards up the hill to join the main road linking Grange with Flookburgh. Kentsford Road, the connecting road between Kirkhead Road and Carter Road, did not exist. The land between Kirkhead Road, Carter Road and Allithwaite Road was farmland. Mary Lambert – Landowner. Mary Winfield Lambert owned all the land and buildings around Kirkhead Road including Laneside Farm which was the base for the agricultural operations on the land in Kents Bank. On her death in 1857 Mary Winfield Lambert lived at Boarbank House, Allithwaite. Miss Lambert’s estate stretching from Boarbank Hall in Allithwaite to Abbot Hall in Kents Bank was sold by auction in August 1858 to ‘capitalists from Manchester, Bury and Whitehaven’ (Westmorland Gazette Aug 28 1858). -

Anglers should check that they have the permission of the owner or tenant of the fishing rights before commencing to fish. This guide informs you of where permits can be obtained for the relevant fishing areas. Anglers should also be aware of the closed seasons and relevant rules regarding baits.
