1 2 Tammuz - 5 Elul 5775 July - August 2019 28 Sivan - 30 Av 5779 Dear Friends, The Talmud tells us that when one takes leave of a friend, he should do so with words of Torah, “...thereby, he will remember him.” Who will remember whom? Maharsha says that each will remember the other; I will remember that I told him this word of Torah and he will remember from whom he heard these words. Looking back at five decades in the rabbinate, I see the truth of those words. Just this past year I received an email from a former student, now a grandfather, from my first congrega- tion in Oshawa, Ontario. There were 10 bar mitzvah boys in his class and he, now a film maker, wants to have a reunion and make a film of the effect of those years of study on their current lives. Ever so often I receive notice of a simcha in the families of the grown-up teenagers from Albany. A wedding, birth, or bar mitzvah does not go by without us receiving an invitation to share in the simcha. And recently I attended the wedding of a young lady whom I first saw just moments after her birth, and believe it or not, I actually heldFRIDAY even before MINCHA her father, TIMES who was away on a business trip. A Rabbi, because of his unique role, becomes a family member of many of his congregants, sharing with them lifecycle events, both the joyous and the sad. I am thankful to Hashem that, together with Lucy, I have had the privilege to serve as rabbi to Schomre Israel and my other communities. We have attempted to help you become the best person you can be according to the standards of our age old Torah, through formal teaching and through ex- ample. What does a parent or teacher want from their children or protégés; they want nachas. The end of a year or chapter of life is the opportunity for the beginning of new and fresh opportunities. May we all give much nachas to our Father in Heaven and may we all be blessed with years of good health and nachas. Best regards and wishes, Rabbi Eliezer Langer 2 CALENDAR FOR JULY — AUGUST 2019 845.454.2890 - [email protected] - www.schomreisrael.org SHABBAT TORAH SHABBAT DATE CANDLE MINCHA PORTION ENDS LIGHTING July 5 8:14 PM 7:00 PM Korach 9:15 PM July 12 8:12 PM 7:00 PM Chukat 9:12 PM July 19 8:07 PM 7:00 PM Balak 9:07 PM July 26 8:01 PM 7:00 PM Pinchas 9:01 PM Aug. 2 7:54 PM 7:00 PM Matot - Masei 8:53 PM Aug. 9 7:45 PM 7:00 PM Devarim (Shabbat Chazon / Erev Tisha B’Av) 8:44 PM Aug. 16 7:36 PM 7:00 PM Va’etchanan (Shabbat Nachamu) 8:35 PM Aug. 23 7:25 PM 7:00 PM Ekev 8:24 PM Aug. 30 7:14 PM 7:00 PM Re’eh (Rosh Chodesh Av) 8:13 PM Sept. 6 7:02 PM 7:00 PM Shoftim 8:01 PM Sept. 13 6:50 PM 6:50 PM Ki Tetze 7:49 PM Sept. 20 6:38 PM 6:40 PM Ki Tavo (Selichot at night) 7:37 PM FRIDAY MINCHA TIMES DATES TO REMEMBER . These include: A. The destruction of both the first and second Temples in Jerusalem (586 B.C.E. and 70 C.E.). B. The fall of Bethar in the Bar-Kochba rebellion (135 C.E.). This disaster marked the end of all Jewish aspirations for freedom fromFRIDAY Rome. MINCHA TIMES C. In later centuries other sad occurrences were associated with this day. Among them the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492. The severity of Tisha B’Av equals that of Yom Kippur in that both fast days commence on the pre- vious evening. The atmosphere in Shul is gloomy, the lights are dimmed, the curtain is removed from the Ark and most worshipers sit on low stools or on the floor. The Book of Lamentations (Megillas Eichah) is read, and the special Kinos (prayers of lamentations) are recited. Among other Halachic injunctions observed on Tisha B’Av are: 1. Complete fasting. 2. No bathing. 3. No conjugal relations. 4. No leather shoes are worn (rubber or canvas shoes are allowed). 5. It is even prohibited to study Torah on this day because Torah study is considered a very continued on page 4 4 THE SIGNIFICANCE OF TISHA B’AV continued from page 3 great joy and happiness. (There are certain texts that are permitted). 6. It is not customary to greet people with the usual greetings such as “hello” or “good morn- ing”. However, if you are greeted by someone who doesn’t know the law, you should answer in a soft voice in order not to offend or hurt their feelings. 7. One should try to avoid business transactions or important decisions on this day if possible. Needless to say, in all cases where health is an issue the law is very lenient. The Rabbi should be consulted in all such cases. For your summer reading pleasure we include a list selected from a 160 book list created by Rabbi Anthony Manning of Jerusalem.
