From the Parochial Vicar Here’s some Catholic trivia for you: who is the only canonized antipope? The answer is St. Hippolytus. We cele- brate his feast day, along with that of Pope St. Pontian, on August 13. St. Hippolytus was a priest in Rome in the early third century. He was a scholar, and perhaps the most significant theologian the city of Rome produced in the days before the Peace of Constantine. However, Hippolytus had some significant disagreements with Pope Callistus I. Hippolytus thought that Callistus was too lenient in allowing repentant sinners to return to the Eucha- rist. So when Callistus was elected bishop of Rome in 218, Hippolytus set himself up as a rival bishop and led a segment of Roman Christians into schism. This schism continued past Callistus’s death, through the reign of Pope Urban I and into the reign of Pope Ponti- an. In 235, Maximinius I become the Roman emperor, and he began a round of persecutions aimed primarily at the leaders of Christian communities in major cities. Both Pontian and Hippolytus were arrested and condemned to manual labor in the mines of Sardinia. The pope and the antipope both died in Sardinia, but before their deaths the two were reconciled. The remains of both Pontian and Hippolytus were returned to Rome, and the Church has long venerated them as martyrs. It may seem a little strange to us to ask for the intercession of a schismatic antipope, but I’ve always found the story of St. Hippolytus to be inspirational. Divisions within our faith often arise out of firmly held convictions. But however firm our convictions are, we can still be wrong (as St. Hippolytus was). In the end, St. Hippolytus not only had the courage to endure persecution, he also had the humility to acknowledge his mistakes and the charity to reconcile with the rightful bishop. We could find worse role models, especially in a world that values firm convictions above humility and charity. St. Hippolytus, pray for us!
