Sv ir id o v received 24.II.2000 Summary: 630 species of the Noctuidae are listed for the modern Volgo-Ural fauna. 2 species [Mesapamea hedeni Graeser and Amphidrina amurensis Staudinger ) are noted from Europe for the first time and one more— Nycteola siculana Fuchs —from Russia. 3 species ( Catocala optata Godart , Helicoverpa obsoleta Fabricius , Pseudohadena minuta Pungeler ) are deleted from the list. Supposedly they were either erroneously determinated or incorrect noted from the region under consideration since Eversmann 's work. 289 species are recorded from the re gion in addition to Eversmann 's list. This paper is the fifth in a series of publications1 dealing with the composition of the pres ent-day fauna of noctuid-moths in the Middle Volga and the south-western Cisurals. This re gion comprises the administrative divisions of the Astrakhan, Volgograd, Saratov, Samara, Uljanovsk, Orenburg, Uralsk and Atyraus (= Gurjev) Districts, together with Tataria and Bash kiria. As was accepted in the first part of this series, only material reliably labelled, and cover ing the last 20 years was used for this study. The main collections are those of the authors: V. The Ecological Factors Governing the Persistence of Butterflies in Urban Areas
THE ECOLOGICAL FACTORS GOVERNING THE PERSISTENCE OF BUTTERFLIES IN URBAN AREAS by ALISON LORAM A thesis submitted to The University of Birmingham for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY School of Biosciences The University of Birmingham September 2004 ABSTRACT Previous studies have suggested that availability of high quality habitat rather than habitat connectivity or species mobility was the limiting factor in the distribution of grassland butterflies, but were mostly undertaken on specialist species in rural areas. Consequently, this project tests the hypothesis that the quality of available habitat is more important than patch size or connectivity to the persistence of four grassland butterfly species in the West Midlands conurbation. Two of the study species are widespread (Polyommatus icarus and Coenonympha pamphilus) whilst two have a more restricted distribution (Erynnis tages and Callophrys rubi). However, unlike species with very specific requirements, all are polyphagous and can tolerate a wide range of conditions, making habitat quality difficult to quantify. Several means of assessing habitat quality were developed and tested. A detailed vegetation quadrat sampling method had the best predictive abilities for patch occupancy and summarised the habitat preferences within the urban context. A model based upon habitat quality and connectivity was devised, with the ability to rank each patch according to potential suitability for each species. For all four species, habitat quality accounted significantly for the greatest variance in distribution. Connectivity had only a small significant effect whilst patch area had almost none. This suggests that conservation efforts should be centred upon preserving and improving habitat quality. Dörge1*, Sarah Cunze1 and Sven Klimpel1,2 Abstract Background: More than 170 species of tabanids are known in Europe, with many occurring only in limited areas or having become very rare in the last decades. They continue to spread various diseases in animals and are responsible for livestock losses in developing countries. The current monitoring and recording of horsefies is mainly conducted throughout central Europe, with varying degrees of frequency depending on the country. To the detriment of tabanid research, little cooperation exists between western European and Eurasian countries. Methods: For these reasons, we have compiled available sources in order to generate as complete a dataset as possi- ble of six horsefy species common in Europe. We chose Haematopota pluvialis, Chrysops relictus, C. caecutiens, Tabanus bromius, T. bovinus and T. sudeticus as ubiquitous and abundant species within Europe. The aim of this study is to esti- mate the distribution, land cover usage and niches of these species. We used a surface-range envelope (SRE) model in accordance with our hypothesis of an underestimated distribution based on Eurocentric monitoring regimes. Results: Our results show that all six species have a wide range in Eurasia, have a broad climatic niche and can there- fore be considered as widespread generalists. Areas with modelled habitat suitability cover the observed distribution and go far beyond these. This supports our assumption that the current state of tabanid monitoring and the recorded distribution signifcantly underestimates the actual distribution. -

6 INDICATOR SPECIES The idea that a group of species can be used as indicators to assess and monitor environmental quality and change is a simple and attractive one and has been successful in a number of cases. The range of species is considerable and they can be used in a variety of ways. The first group are those which are used to describe and classify communities. A good example of this is phytosociolagy, the National Vegetation Classification for instance. Here an assemblage of species is used to distinguish one community from another. Further sub-divisions of the main community and the relationships between vegetation types can be defined by considering the presence and absence of other (indicator) species. A second group of species is used to assess quality and to monitor environmental change. Perhaps the best example of this is provided by freshwater communities which are used to assess river water quality. Here there have been three approaches; first. a simple biotic index in which the differential responses of species to a pollutant is used to asses quality. Secondly, diversity indices (species richness and equitability) provides a more refined approach. Finally, the most detailed approach relates community structure to environmental variables (RIVPACS) to provide target communities against which physical and chemical stresses can be assessed. The group of indicator species which are used to identify ancient woodland or to date hedgerows is similar to a biotic index. In these cases persistence and susceptibility to disturbance are the variables which determine the presence or absence of these species. Finally there are species which have a high conservation value. -

Accepted 11 May, 2012 Medicinal plants are considered to be the most hopeful way for cancer treatment. The Cichorium endivia, L. plant materials were collected from Tanuma, Saudi Arabia. Methanol extraction for the phenolic compounds was carried out and the HPLC analysis showed that, the extract containing four main compounds with different concentrations. The anticancer activity of the root extract was examined on breast cancer cell line MFC7 compared with the anticancer 5 FU (5-fluorouracil). Cytotoxicity of the root extract against the MFC7 line was 401ug/mL but it was 0.67 ug/mL with the 5 FU. The gene expression for the DNA cancer markers; P53, Bcl2, TNF and interleukin IL-4, IL-6 and IL-2 were examined using real time PCR. The expression of the P53 and TNF was high both in cells treated with FU and root extract. Expression of Bcl2 was high in the cell line treated with root extract compared with the FU, yet this expression still was low compared with the control ones. The expression level of IL-2, IL-4 decreased in the examined cell lines treated with both root extract and with 5FU as well. -

The forecast for the week was truly amazing with wall-to-wall sunshine predicted and temperatures that might reach the upper 30 degrees Centigrade. A bit different from the snow and rain last year! Boarding the train to Interlaken, we had an easy passage through Zurich airport, which can't be said for Heathrow, where one of the group, having breakfast, broke their tooth just a few minutes before takeoff! With just a few minutes to decide, the decision was made to continue on the trip but this dodgy sausage necessitated emergency dentistry. However, thanks to the astonishing efficient Swiss, we arrived in Interlaken at 4.05pm and the patient was in the emergency dentist chair by 4.30, with the tooth being repaired an hour later! Whilst this was being done, the remainder of the group had travelled up to the hotel in Wengen and, before dinner, went to a small meadow (christened last year as 'Margaret's Meadow' in honour of the lady who found it).
