Special theme: Languages and Linguistics at an Ethnological Museum National Museum of Language is a window into the human mind and reflects human activities, Ethnology while linguistics is an academic field where languages are analyzed from a scientific view-point. As an ethnological museum, Minpaku has a strong focus Osaka on fieldwork, which is necessary for linguists and ethnologists to study languages and learn about human beings and their diversity. Essays in this Number 39 issue present glimpses of the thoughts of linguists at Minpaku who combine linguistic fieldwork and later analysis at their desks. What is unique to December 2014 researchers at Minpaku, however, is that we are also involved with exhibitions for the public and have everyday communication with Anthropology Newsletter anthropologists in other fields. Languages do not exist without humans and humans do not exist without language. We believe that linguistic research is a good starting point on the path to a better understanding of who we are. When I was in the field, this question all of a sudden struck me. To make sure that my facts were correct, I checked the desktop dictionaries that I was carrying — a pocket-size dictionary published in 1979, a student dictionary published in 1996, and one Contents published in 2008 — and confirmed that all of these actually contained Languages and Linguistics the word as I had thought. Hopkins The lexical data reported in this Chuj-English dictionary were gathered during my dissertation field work in 1964-65. My first exposure to the Chuj language was in 1962, when I went to Huehuetenango with Norman A. McQuown and Brent Berlin to gather data on the languages of the Cuchumatanes (Berlin et al. 1969). At the time I was a graduate student at the University of Texas, employed as a research assistant on the University of Chicago's Chiapas Study Projects, directed by McQuown (McQuown and Pitt-Rivers 1970). Working through the Maryknoll priests who were then the Catholic clergy in the indigenous areas of Huehuetenango and elsewhere in Guatemala, we recorded material, usually in the form of 100-word Swadesh lists (for glottochronology), from several languages. The sample included two speakers of the Chuj variety of San Mateo Ixtatán (including the man who was later to become my major informant). In the Spring of 1962, as field work for the project wound down, I returned to Austin to finish drafting my Master's thesis, and then went on to Chicago to begin graduate studies in Anthropology at the University of Chicago, with McQuown as my major professor. I continued to work on Chiapas project materials in McQuown's archives, and in 1963 he assigned me the Chuj language as the topic of my upcoming doctoral dissertation. -

Native American Languages, Indigenous Languages of the Native Peoples of North, Middle, and South America
Native American Languages, indigenous languages of the native peoples of North, Middle, and South America. The precise number of languages originally spoken cannot be known, since many disappeared before they were documented. In North America, around 300 distinct, mutually unintelligible languages were spoken when Europeans arrived. Of those, 187 survive today, but few will continue far into the 21st century, since children are no longer learning the vast majority of these. In Middle America (Mexico and Central America) about 300 languages have been identified, of which about 140 are still spoken. South American languages have been the least studied. Around 1500 languages are known to have been spoken, but only about 350 are still in use. These, too are disappearing rapidly. Classification A major task facing scholars of Native American languages is their classification into language families. (A language family consists of all languages that have evolved from a single ancestral language, as English, German, French, Russian, Greek, Armenian, Hindi, and others have all evolved from Proto-Indo-European.) Because of the vast number of languages spoken in the Americas, and the gaps in our information about many of them, the task of classifying these languages is a challenging one. In 1891, Major John Wesley Powell proposed that the languages of North America constituted 58 independent families, mainly on the basis of superficial vocabulary resemblances. At the same time Daniel Brinton posited 80 families for South America. These two schemes form the basis of subsequent classifications. In 1929 Edward Sapir tentatively proposed grouping these families into superstocks, 6 in North America and 15 in Middle America. -

Long occupying a central position in one of the cradles of human 5 civilization, speakers of Otomanguean languages have played important roles in the region, 6 about which their languages have much to tell. However, Otomanguean is perhaps the least 7 understood of the major Mesoamerican language families, due to its great diversity, the 8 remarkable structural complexity of Otomanguean languages, and the history of the field of 9 Otomanguean historical linguistics, which has seen great achievement alternating with periodic 10 controversy and doubt. With a focus on the higher levels and more ancient time depths of the 11 family, this article surveys Otomanguean historical linguistic work and presents a state of the 12 art perspective on Otomanguean classification, reconstruction, linguistic prehistory, remaining 13 challenges, and prospects for the future. 14 1 Introduction 15 Otomanguean is an expansive language family that has been centered around the core of the 16 Mesoamerican cultural (Kirchhoff 1967[1943]) and linguistic area (Campbell et al. 1986) for 17 as long as we can detect. It extends a little beyond the northern limits of Mesoamerica into the 18 state of San Luis Potosí, Mexico (Pame), and it previously reached as far south as the Gulf of 19 Nicoya along the Pacific slope of Costa Rica (Mangue). -

The Numeral System of Purepecha: Historical and Typological Perspectives1 Abstract The internal structure of numeral systems can shed light on processes of word formation, language contact and change. In this article I analyse the numeral system of Purepecha, a language isolate spoken in Michoacán (western Mexico), on the basis of historical and contemporary sources. The Purepecha system is unusual both typologically and areally since (i) it possesses monolexemic terms up to six, while seven to nine are compounds with five; and (ii) the forms for the base (20) and next power (400) have clear non-corporeal meanings, related instead to a configuration of objects and the notion of ‘living’, respectively. -
The Data from Huave Borrowings

Introduction The Huavean family, generally considered a genetic isolate, is currently spoken in four distinct dialects/languages in four communities surrounding a large lagoon on the Pacific coast of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec in the state of Oaxaca, Mexico: San Francisco del Mar (F), Santa María del Mar (MA), San Dionisio del Mar (D), and San Mateo del Mar (MO). Belmar (1901), in a detailed study of MA, proposed a genetic relationship between Huave and the Mayan languages, but Radin (1916), based on field work on D, rejected the link to Mayan, proposing instead that Huave belonged to the Mixe-Zoquean family. Aside from mostly vague typological parallels and a few morphological commonalities, both authors relied on lexical resemblances, which were striking and numerous enough to permit a somewhat plausible hypothesis of genetic relatedness. Suárez (1975) then offered a detailed reconstruction of Proto-Huave (PH), convincingly establishing that no external genetic relationships could be demonstrated. Since that time no further work on comparative Huavean has been published, although quite a number of descriptive materials and grammatical studies have become available, most importantly a grammar and dictionary of MO (Stairs & Stairs 1981) and a dissertation on the phonology and morphology of F (Kim 2008). Also in recent years descriptive work has resumed (after a century of neglect) for the other two dialects, D and MA. With this large body of 314 AMERINDIA N°37(2) 2015 new data, along with Radin’s unpublished field notes, the present author has compiled a large comparative and etymological dictionary of Huavean (Noyer 2012, henceforth DECH: Diccionario etimológico y comparativo de las lenguas huaves), which contains all available lexical materials, both published and unpublished, a more complete reconstruction of the PH root lexicon, and extensive attention to the origin of Huave loanword vocabulary. -
Experimental Approaches to Ergative Languages
Experimental approaches to ergative languages Nicholas Longenbaugh and Maria Polinsky∗ Abstract: In this chapter, we summarize major results in the domain of experimental approaches to ergativity, focusing on three major topics. First, we discuss studies that explore the competition between accusative and ergative alignment, where researchers have attempted to derive the typological preference for accusative alignment from processing- and learnability- based constraints. Next, we examine studies concerning the interrelated issues of long-distance dependencies and agreement. The unique dissociation of case and argument-hood in ergative languages has afforded researchers new means of testing conclusions regarding the privileged grammatical status of subject, the relative import and function of case and agreement in the grammar, and the origins of constraints on extraction in ergative languages and beyond. Given that linguists have only recently begun to conduct experimental research on ergative languages, we conclude by suggesting areas for future research where ergativity might provide genuine insights rather than just replicate existing studies of accusative languages.
