Finding aids are the key both to the contents of an archive or manuscript collection and to locating documents within it. Les Inventaire des Archives Nationales de Paris micro form collection is comprised ofalmost 800 previously unpublished finding aids which provide ac­ cess to the contents ofthe most important collections ofthe Archives Nationales. Most are in the form oftypescripts or card indexes prepared by archivists. The finding aids to the Archives National es reproduced in this edition have been carefully chosen for their value to researchers. The finding aids have been indexed by title, subject, and fiche number to ensure easy access to the material. The Archives were instituted under the direction ofthe French government during the Revolu­ tion. The material in the archives has been organized chronologically into Ancient and Modem sections; these have been subdivided by type ofmaterial, e.g., administrative, historic, etc. Each ofthese subdivisions has been assigned a letter designation for ease ofaccess. In addi­ tion, the SectionAncienne contains Les Fonds de la Marine, des Colonies et desAffaires Etrangeres. Additional information on the structure and organization ofthe Archives Nationales can be found in the Guide de l 'Utilisateur des Inventaires des Archives Nationales, by Isabelle Carbonnel et Ghislain Brunel, Paris, Chadwyck-Healey France, 1990. v How to Use the Index The Collection is divided into four parts: Parts I, II, III and Supplement. Two Subject Sub­ sections, La Revolution Fram;aise and Les Beaux-Arts, contain titles which are also in­ cluded within the four parts ofthe microfiche collection. These are identified by a plus sign (+) for La Revolution Franraise and an asterisk (*) for Les Beaux-Arts appended to the Part designation in the Index. The index is arranged in three sections: Title, Subject and Fiche Number. Title Index Entries in the Title index contain the title, fiche number, number offiche, Part number, Archives category, Archives number, and a note field that contains information on the content of the fiches. All fiche numbers begin with 201.1., followed by up to three additional digits. The order is based on the numbers that follow the second. Through an ethnographic research conducted in Jemna, a remote village in southern Tunisia, I analyze an act of reclaiming an oasis during the 2011 revolution and the meaningfulness of the act to the locals. The thesis situates the act of the villagers in a broader historical context and engages with questions of the history of land relations, marginalization, subalternity, and center-margin relations. Une commission brillamment composée lui décerna la grande médaille d’or de la Société de Géographie de Paris. Fêté en 1864, le livre serait décrié vingt ans plus tard par ceux qui reprocheraient à l’auteur d’avoir fait des Touaregs un portrait trompeusement irénique. C’est que l’image du désert avait changé dans l’intervalle. Encore une promesse en 1864, il était devenu une menace, surtout après qu’une colonne française dirigée par le colonel Flatters eut été massacrée dans le Hoggar en 1881.

    BIOGRAPHICAL APPENDIX Aberdeen George Hamilton-Gordon, earl of (1784–1860), was the Foreign Secretary under Robert Peel 1841–46 and a close friend of Guizot and of Princess Lieven. He acted as go- between for Louis-Philippe and the comte de Chambord in 1849–50. He was the Prime Minister of Great Britain in 1852–55. Affre Denis-Auguste (1793–1848) was the archbishop of Paris from 1840. He rallied to the Republic quickly in 1848 but was mortally wounded when he tried to parlay with insur- gents during the June Days. d’Agoult Marie (1805–76) published her Histoire de la Révolution de 1848 under the name of Daniel Stern. Arago François (1786–1853) was an astronomer and member of the Provisional Government and Executive Commission. Barante Prosper de (1782–1866) was a member of the Doctrinaires in the Restoration and prefect during the July Monarchy as well as ambassador in Turin and Saint Petersburg. Baroche Jules (1802–70) was the Minister of the Interior from March 1850, actively supported the electoral reform law of 31 May 1850. He resigned when Changarnier was dis- missed but was made Minister of Foreign Affairs in April 1851, only to resign in October in protest against the President’s attempt to revoke the law of 31 May. After the coup he became President of the Council of State. Barrot Odilon (1791–1873) was prefect of the Seine after the 1830 Revolution.     [Dis]Orientation: The Problem of Representation in European and American Travel Writing on Morocco, 1880-1940 a thesis presented by Marie Elizabeth Burks for the History of Science Department in partial fulfillment of an honors degree in History and Science Harvard University Cambridge, Massachusetts March 2006 ABSTRACT This thesis is an examination of representations of Morocco in European and American travel writing from 1880-1940. Drawing on the scholarship of Edward Said, Mary Louise Pratt, and others, it looks to the works of Charles de Foucauld, Pierre Loti, Edith Wharton, Prosper Ricard, and Wyndham Lewis to ascertain how each author solved the problem of mapping Morocco onto the Western imagination in the colonial context. European political and economic involvement in Morocco, formalized by its annexation by the French in 1912, places each of these writers in the colonial situation. Beginning with eighteenth-century scientific expeditions and ending with American film production in Morocco, this thesis situates these writers in their historical context, tracing the variations and consistencies in Western representations of Morocco over time.
