Introduction – Executive Summary The Local Government Association (LGA) and Department for Transport (DfT) have identified “Better Air Quality” as a key shared priority in the second round of local transport plans (LTP2). Evidence indicates exposure to certain air pollutants can have serious implications for human health and negatively impact on quality of life. In addition, the growth of greenhouse gas emission is now recognised as a serious social, economic and environmental issue at both local and global levels. Like many urban centres in the UK, local road transport emissions in Greater Manchester (GM) adversely affects local air quality and contributes towards greenhouse gas emissions. Nitrogen dioxide and to a lesser extent particulate matter are of particular concern to the health of the local population. In 2005 all GM Districts declared that in some areas ground level concentrations of nitrogen dioxide would exceed national health based targets in 2010 if corrective action to reduce emissions is not taken.

  • Summary of Comments - Lets Talk About Supported Transport
APPENDIX C(1) Summary of comments - Lets talk about Supported Transport Aim of the consultation The consultation sought to engage a range of stakeholders in a debate about the savings the council needs to make with its spending on supported transport services and the opportunities to reconfigure these services following a tendering process and a reflection on some of the recent changes e.g. concessionary bus passes for older people. The consultation ran from 1 March 2011 and closed on 11 May – a period of just over 9 weeks. How was the consultation conducted The council used multiple channels to get the message out that it was seeking to engage people on these issues. The channels used were: • Press release • Leaflets on all buses, community transport vehicles, in doctors surgeries and newsagents • Posters at Park & Ride sites • A listing on the council’s Consultation Finder which details all the council’s consultation in one place on the internet: www.bristol.gov.uk/consultationfinder • Twitter • Facebook • Informed existing operators of supported transport services • Emails to equalities fora / letter to Bristol Older People’s Forum • Posters and information packs to all the council’s libraries In order to have an informed public debate about these issues, the ASK Bristol discussion site was used which gave an overview of the challenge and opportunities facing the council with these services. The site also allowed people to access detailed passenger, expenditure and subsidy information to help participants make an informed contribution to the debate. This information can be seen at: http://askbristol.wordpress.com/2011/03/02/lets-talk-about- supported-transport-services/ Access for those people NOT online For those people without internet access, paper copies of a briefing paper were sent to the council’s libraries along with a paper feedback form.

  • Thomas Heatherwick, Architecture's Showman
Thomas Heatherwick, Architecture’s Showman His giant new structure aims to be an Eiffel Tower for New York. Is it genius or folly? February 26, 2018 | By IAN PARKER Stephen Ross, the seventy-seven-year-old billionaire property developer and the owner of the Miami Dolphins, has a winningly informal, old-school conversational style. On a recent morning in Manhattan, he spoke of the moment, several years ago, when he decided that the plaza of one of his projects, Hudson Yards—a Doha-like cluster of towers on Manhattan’s West Side—needed a magnificent object at its center. He recalled telling him- self, “It has to be big. It has to be monumental.” He went on, “Then I said, ‘O.K. Who are the great sculptors?’ ” (Ross pronounced the word “sculptures.”) Before long, he met with Thomas Heatherwick, the acclaimed British designer of ingenious, if sometimes unworkable, things. Ross told me that there was a presentation, and that he was very impressed by Heatherwick’s “what do you call it—Television? Internet?” An adviser softly said, “PowerPoint?” Ross was in a meeting room at the Time Warner Center, which his company, Related, built and partly owns, and where he lives and works. We had a view of Columbus Circle and Central Park. The room was filled with models of Hudson Yards, which is a mile and a half southwest, between Thirtieth and Thirty-third Streets, and between Tenth Avenue and the West Side Highway. There, Related and its partner, Oxford Properties Group, are partway through erecting the complex, which includes residential space, office space, and a mall—with such stores as Neiman Marcus, Cartier, and Urban Decay, and a Thomas Keller restaurant designed to evoke “Mad Men”—most of it on a platform built over active rail lines.

  • 2021 Book News Welcome to Our 2021 Book News
2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020.
