Introduction – Executive Summary The Local Government Association (LGA) and Department for Transport (DfT) have identified “Better Air Quality” as a key shared priority in the second round of local transport plans (LTP2). Evidence indicates exposure to certain air pollutants can have serious implications for human health and negatively impact on quality of life. In addition, the growth of greenhouse gas emission is now recognised as a serious social, economic and environmental issue at both local and global levels. Like many urban centres in the UK, local road transport emissions in Greater Manchester (GM) adversely affects local air quality and contributes towards greenhouse gas emissions. Nitrogen dioxide and to a lesser extent particulate matter are of particular concern to the health of the local population. In 2005 all GM Districts declared that in some areas ground level concentrations of nitrogen dioxide would exceed national health based targets in 2010 if corrective action to reduce emissions is not taken.

    DERBY BOROUGH TRANSPORT HISTORICAL FLEET LIST This list is not complete - Please email any additions or corrections to this list - thanks! Some notes on Derby's fleet numbering may be helpful. The prewar motorbus series reached 73, and the first wartime utility bus (a solitary Bristol K) took the fleet number 74. The series then reverted to 1, with 1-21 being Daimler and Guy utilities. By 1949, however, the new series was 'catching up' with the earlier prewar numbers, hence the jump from 41 to 75 to avoid duplication. This series then continued right up to 315, delivered in 1981; lowheight double deckers and coaches were numbered in separate series, as were the four Daimlers acquired secondhand from Halifax. A new series for new-generation double deckers was begun in 1978 by Foden NC number 101. Trolleybuses followed on from the tram series, with the first one (79) arriving in 1932; the series then continued unbroken to 243 of 1960. The motorbus series nearly caught up with the trolleybus numbers in 1966, but the complete withdrawal of trolleybus services in 1967 eliminated this problem. Trolleybuses F/No Reg.     2021 Book News Welcome to our 2021 Book News. As we come towards the end of a very strange year we hope that you’ve managed to get this far relatively unscathed. It’s been a very challenging time for us all and we’re just relieved that, so far, we’re mostly all in one piece. While we were closed over lockdown, Mark took on the challenge of digitalising some of Venture’s back catalogue producing over 20 downloadable books of some of our most popular titles. Thanks to the kind donations of our customers we managed to raise over £3000 for The Christie which was then matched pound for pound by a very good friend taking the total to almost £7000. There is still time to donate and download these books, just click on the downloads page on our website for the full list. We’re still operating with reduced numbers in the building at any one time. We’ve re-organised our schedules for packers and office staff to enable us to get orders out as fast as we can, but we’re also relying on carriers and suppliers. Many of the publishers whose titles we stock are small societies or one-man operations so please be aware of the longer lead times when placing orders for Christmas presents. The last posting dates for Christmas are listed on page 63 along with all the updates in light of the current Covid situation and also the impending Brexit deadline. In particular, please note the change to our order and payment processing which was introduced on 1st July 2020.

PDF-119-2 Page 2 John Fishwick & Sons 1907-2015 After a spell working with the Leyland Steam Motor Company in Leyland, John Fishwick decided to start his own haulage business. In 1907 he purchased a steam wagon from his former employers and began hauling rubber from the local works to Liverpool and Manchester. In 1910 he purchased another Leyland vehicle - this time a Leyland X-type with petrol engine that was used as a lorry but could be fitted with a very basic style of wagonette body seating 30 passengers for a Saturday only service to Leyland market from Eccleston, that commenced in 1911. More vehicles followed, most of which had interchangeable bodies for use as a lorry as well as a bus. Soon John Fishwick was operating a number of routes serving Preston, Chorley and Ormskirk.

PDF-079-1 2 Manchester Corporation Transport Department - The Buses 1906-1969 Although Manchester experimented early with the motorbus, it was not until July 1906 that the first Manchester Corporation bus route, between the tram terminus at West Didsbury and the Church Inn at Northenden, began operating, replacing the horse buses that had previously plied the route. Three vehicles (Nos. 1-3) were ordered from the local firm of Crossley Brothers, although the chassis were obtained from the Lancashire Steam Motor Company of Leyland (the predecessor of Leyland Motors) and bodied by Dick Kerr of Preston. A further service to Cheadle from West Didsbury was introduced shortly afterwards, and another vehicle, this time a Ryknield (No.4), again with Dick Kerr bodywork, was purchased. However, not everyone appreciated the new bus services, especially the residents of West Didsbury who voiced their complaints over the noise and fumes of the buses.
