CULTURE SPOTLIGHT SEPT 2019 THE BATTLE OF STOCKTON 1 CAMPAIGN

The Battle of Stockton Campaign, a new community group, was set up to commemorate a historic episode in the life of Stockton-on-Tees. The campaign aims to immortalise the locals who chased Oswald Mosley’s British Union of Fascists out of Stockton on the 10th September 1933. To remind the current population of Stockton about the feats of their ancestors, the campaign has organised a series of events around the day of the battle to educate the public on the history of their town. ‘The Introduction to the Battle of Stockton’ covers why the British Union of Fascists were encouraged to convene in the town and the significance of the event both locally and nationally. The event will be hosted by Martin ‘The Time Traveller’ who is a local historian with a particular interest in Stockton and Middlesbrough in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. This will be immediately followed by the second event, ‘Art of Resistance’. The event is a “messy session” where event-goers can create their own piece of protest art and contribute to a group work that will be displayed across the weekend of the Battle of Stockton celebrations. Locals short on time are encouraged to call in to make a badge in support of the event. Children are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult. ‘Unity over Division’ is a workshop that looks at practical ways to thwart the far right’s narrative, including myths about immigration and migration in Britain, the welfare state, the NHS, education and women’s rights. The fourth event, ‘Teesside: No Place for Terrorists’ is a seminar detailing The campaign aims how Teessiders responded to the struggle to immortalise the for women’s suffrage. The workshop will consider some of the key figures at the time locals who chased Oswald and examine how much support there was Mosley’s British Union for the terrorist activities of the Suffragette movement. Another hosted by The Battle for of Fascists out Stockton Campaign is ‘The Spanish Civil War: of Stockton Tosh McDonald’. McDonald will discuss the experiences of The International Brigade during the Spanish Civil War 1933-39. He will look at the relevance of worldwide working-class struggle and how it is important for communities to unite for their rights. And the final event is Rock Against Racism – a live music event to show solidarity with the diverse communities that make up 21st Century UK. If you’re a history buff then the events are well worth attending and even better - are free to attend.HAYLEY ELLEN WATSON.

All the events will be held at The Georgian Theatre, Stockton between Friday 6th and Saturday 7th September. For more information, visit Facebook.com/battleofstockton.

When you think of the Teesside area, fresh-metal bands are not the first thing that springs to mind. However, hungry young five-piece Nephilim are doing everything within their power to make their voices heard and be recognised as major players on both the local and national circuit. After a couple of years cutting their teeth and gigging consistently in various locations up and down the country, Friday 20th September sees the band release their debut album, ‘Demonic Society’.“We have all been working so hard over the last few months.
