    THE DAZZLING BLACKNESS By Jamie Brisick I’m thinking about Brazilian president Getúlio Vargas, who shot himself in the heart in 1954; I’m thinking about Pepê Lopes, who died in a hang gliding accident while trying to win a second world title in Japan in 1991; I’m thinking about Aryton Senna, the Formula One racer who died on lap seven of the San Marino Grand Prix in Italy in 1994. I am not thinking about death explicitly, but death hangs over all of this. I’m bodysurfing the north end of Barra da Tijuca, a spot called Praia do Pepê, named after the hang glider. The swell is out of the southwest; the waves are a whomping four foot, mostly lefts, with the occasional short burst of right. The water smells of sewage, with a distinctly Rio tang. My romantic self likes to think of it as bathing in the collective DNA of this city of six million. My more practical self fears Hep A. On my feet, Da Fins, recommended by bodysurfing guru Mark Cunningham. At the tip of my fingers, a Danny Hess-shaped hand plane, which I have learned to hold with my inside hand. This is why I love bodysurfing. This is why, in my recent trips to Rio, I end up bodysurfing more than board surfing: I’m still learning new things. At age 47 I may be declining as a surfer, but as a bodysurfer I’m unquestionably improving. The tadpole grows feet and hops across the terra firma. The surfer sheds board and swims off to eternity.

Zelf zal hij om zo’n observatie glimlachen, want hij is ook maar bij toeval begonnen, niet om doelbewust te verschijnen als hemellichaam in de atmosfeer van Groningen. Dat het aantrekkingskracht was, zal Mark niet ontkennen, integendeel. Onaangekondigd landde hij op een magische dag in de stad met zowat theaterbagage uit andere verten, zonder de wil om er ook weer ongemerkt te vertrekken. Hij voelde dat Groningen hem mogelijk zocht en dat het de plaats was om te blijven en een eigen festivaluniversum te scheppen, vol elementen uit een oneindig galactica. Om die elementen draait Noorderzon, zal Mark zeggen, niet om hem. Daar heeft hij gelijk in. Maar het kan niet zonder hem, als onvermoeibare sterrenplukker in een perfecte Groningse Brexit. Eerst was er Oerol. Als rondreizende culturele hobo voor NOS-Radio1 koesterde ik het Terschellinger locatiefestival als opperste bestemming naar een langwerpige waddenplaneet. Het was in de vorderende jaren negentig. Destijds maakten ruim 50.000 mensen de overtocht. Ze kwamen uit heel Nederland. Zo was het niet met Noorderzon. Mijn goede Groninger collega Eric Nederkoorn opperde begin deze eeuw tijdens Oerol dat in Noorderzon ook een reportage voor Radio 1 zat. Sindsdien ben ik vijftien Noorderzon-bezoeken verder. Het was goed om het festival bekendheid te geven buiten Groningen, samen met een paar krantencollega’s. Het heeft nog niet geleid tot tienduizenden bezoekers extra uit heel het land. Ik weet dat Mark Yeoman en algemeen directeur Femke Eerland en de hele staf daar niet bijzonder mee zitten.

Intuitivt, musikaliskt, filmiskt, verklighetsfrånvänt - och ändå underligt bekant och nästan obehagligt oroande. Välkommen till Pixies nya studioalbum, “Beneath the Eyrie”, där sagor om häxor, Daniel Boone, missanpassade och andra karaktärer passar perfekt in i bandets medfödda dysfunktionalitet. Skivan innehåller 12 låtar och släpps – både digitalt och fysiskt - idag via Pixies nya label Infectious/BMG. Lyssna på albumet HÄR! Vi har redan fått två smakprov från plattan. Först kom ”On Graveyard Hill”, en klassisk Pixies-berättelse om omedelbar och överhängande undergång, skriven av Black Francis och Paz Lenchantin. För några veckor sedan släpptes “Catfish Kate”, som är en djupdykning i bandets frontman, Black Francis, mentala fantasivärld. ”Beneath The Eyrie” är inspelat i Dreamland Recordings nära Woodstock, NY. Producent är Grammy-nominerade Tom Dalgety (Ghost, Royal Blood, Pixies). Albumet fick sitt namn när David Lovering tog en paus utanför studion (som från början är en kyrka, St Johns Church, byggd i slutet av 1800-talet). Plötsligt upptäckte han ett örnbo, eller ”eyrie”, i ett träd i närheten - och skivans titel var ett faktum. Samtidigt med inspelningarna av albumet valde Pixies att dokumentera varje del av processen och berätta om vad som ägde rum i studion. Detta sammanställdes sen till en podcast i tolv delar som har fått titeln ”It’s A Pixies Podcast”. I podden får vi en unik inblick i hur alla spåren på skivan kom till; från början till slutförandet. HÄR kan du lyssna på podcasten! Under 2019 och 2020 åker Pixies ut på en världsturne med premiär på Daydream Festival i Pasadena, USA den 31 augusti.

Title: Visual Metaphors on Album Covers: An Analysis into Graphic Design’s Effectiveness at Conveying Music Genres. Abstract approved:_____________________________________________________ Ryann Reynolds-McIlnay The rise of digital streaming has largely impacted the way the average listener consumes music. Consequentially, while the role of album art has evolved to meet the changes in music technology, it is hard to measure the effect of digital streaming on modern album art. This research seeks to determine whether or not graphic design still plays a role in marketing information about the music, such as its genre, to the consumer. It does so through two studies: 1. A computer visual analysis that measures color dominance of an image, and 2. A mixed-design lab experiment with volunteer participants who attempt to assess the genre of a given album. Findings from the first study show that color scheme models created from album samples cannot be used to predict the genre of an album. Further findings from the second theory show that consumers pay a significant amount of attention to album covers, enough to be able to correctly assess the genre of an album most of the time.
