Thompson Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ, Alleluia! “The stone rejected by the builders has become the cornerstone” (cf. Psalm 118). Jesus Christ the Cornerstone has risen, indeed! We celebrate the resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ! The fact that this year’s Easter Sunday falls on April 1 should not cause anyone to be fooled by the great message of hope emanating from the empty tomb. Having spent 40 days of Lenten prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for the sacred Triduum celebrations of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, we now rejoice in his victory over sin and death. By this one great act of redemption, he has freed us from the lasting effects of sinful pride and disobedience. The Risen Christ has broken the chains of evil that sought to bind us for all eternity in fear, guilt and shame. With Jesus Christ as our cornerstone, we need not live in the shadows of darkness. We have been set free from the slavery of sin. The significance of Easter is so incredible that it takes us 50 days, 10 more days than our Lenten days of preparation, to pull out all the stops of rejoicing in this Good News of Salvation. I pray that this Easter Season may be rich in divine grace, peace, hope and joy for everyone throughout our archdiocese. The Lord has risen. Alleluia! See -- Judge -- Act: How Young Christian Workers Renewed the Church by Meirad Scherer-Edmunds, Salt of the Earth The night before 13-year-old Joseph Cardijn was to leave for his first day of work in the factory, he mustered the courage to ask his father a question he'd been mulling over for a long time: "Papa, can I carry on with my studies?" That request came as something of a shock to Cardijn's parents, who had counted on him, the oldest son, to finally help support the struggling family. But Cardijn continued, "I feel that God is calling me, I want to become a priest." His parents, deeply religious, agreed to make further sacrifices to help their son pursue his call. So while his peers in the small Belgian town of Hal went off to work in the area's factories, Cardijn continued his schooling and in the following year, 1896, entered the minor seminary at nearby Malines. When the boarding-school student came back home for the holidays he found his friends' attitudes toward him greatly changed. "I could see then how my old playmates -- better chaps than I, often enough -- had given up even going to church after a few months at work. Just because I was studying to be a priest, they looked upon me as an enemy.

Jesuit Volunteers are asked to explore racial identity and racial justice as a lens to do social analysis and theological reflection. What does it mean to take on an Ignatian approach of a “faith that does justice” and explore the ways the Catholic, Jesuit tradition supports the work of justice -- e.g. Catholic Social Teaching, Scripture and other elements of the tradition. PASTORAL CIRCLE A refresher: Reflect back to Orientation where the pastoral circle is offered up as a resource and framework for moving about your JV experience. Continue to seek new insights and reflections on the pastoral circle, with an emphasis on the discernment element of “judge.” And think through what the "action” draws out within you. For "action" emphasizes that the fruit of reflection and discernment is “right action,” and that JVs have a responsibility to put their faith into action. In previous years, the emphasis has been on legislative advocacy. JVs are invited to consider this, as well as other ways that they can take action.     CHAPTER FIVE STUDENT LIFE AND CAMPUS CULTURE AT DEPAUL A Hundred Year History John 1. Rury hroughout DePaul's history, its students have contributed to the institution's distinctive character. Since 1898, as the university has changed and the campus has grown, a vibrant student culture has evolved. This was hardly unique to DePaul. In many respects, the university's students have reflected national trends in their activities and interests. But as an urban institution, DePaul's location and programs have affected the character of its students and their activities. Historically, Chicago has been a city of immigrants, and over the years DePaul has served the city's principal immigrant groups. It has ministered to Chicago's Roman Catholic popula­ tion, to be sure, but it has also provided educational opportunities for others. As constituents of an urban university, DePaul's students have reflected the diversity and vitality one would expect of a major Chicago institution of higher learning. This is an important part of the university's heritage. In coming together at DePaul, these students created a distinctive social world of their own that changed over time, often mirroring broader tendencies in student life. Still, certain features of the DePaul student experience were quite durable and helped to define an institu­ tional identity. While in many respects its students were similar to their counterparts at other institutions, there were aspects of life at DePaul that were unique. In part this was simply structural. Campus life at DePaul has long been divided between its downtown and uptown (or Lincoln Park) locations, with each site acquiring its own atmosphere.

    2020 N. 2 ACTA 2020 ŒCUMENICA INFORMATION SERVICE OF THE PONTIFICAL COUNCIL FOR PROMOTING CHRISTIAN UNITY e origin of the Pontical Council for Promoting Christian Unity is closely linked with the Second Vatican Council. On 5 June 1960, Saint Pope John XXIII established a ‘Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity’ as one of the preparatory commissions for the Council. In 1966, Saint Pope Paul VI conrmed the Secretariat as a permanent dicastery CUMENICA of the Holy See. In 1974, a Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews was established within the Secretariat. In 1988, Saint Pope John Paul II changed the Secretariats status to Pontical Council. Œ e Pontical Council is entrusted with promoting an authentic ecumenical spirit in the Catholic Church based on the principles of Unitatis redintegratio and the guidelines of its Ecumenical Directory rst published in 1967, and later reissued in 1993. e Pontical Council also promotes Christian unity by strengthening relationships CTA with other Churches and Ecclesial Communities, particularly through A theological dialogue. e Pontical Council appoints Catholic observers to various ecumenical gatherings and in turn invites observers or ‘fraternal delegates’ of other Churches or Ecclesial Communities to major events of the Catholic Church.
