  • Introduction a FIRST Music DJ Is a Part of the Team/Crew Firstly, and Must Understand That the Event and the Games Are the Show
Introduction A FIRST music DJ is a part of the team/crew firstly, and must understand that the event and the games are The Show. The DJ's performance, however, can make or break the event. Hitting the cues, playing the right tunes, and being consistent, brings out a sense of professionalism that will endure the performance to everyone involved. This is a sporting event, not a radio-station, or someone's iPod, or even a club. The focus is much different. The music must be upbeat and positive, may contain interactive elements, and during matches can create tension and suspense. But the bottom line is that at the end of the day "everybody has a good time", including the DJ. This playbook is written with the intent of taking some of the guesswork out of "what to play and when". It is written with much love for this genre that I call Sportsmusic… The Goal Create a playlist of music that will not only be inspiring, motivating, and uplifting but one that will also create a positive atmosphere that promotes gracious professionalism. We will accomplish this by creating files that are edited to give a "tighter" flow to the games. Create a pattern that is easy to follow with limited chance for downtime or "dead-air". The Game Every year the organizers create a different "game" for the robots. But the pattern and process is the same for the DJ. The "M.C." introduces each team in a 3-team alliance, which plays another 3-team alliance. The robots get in place for part 1 of the match: The Autonomous Period, where the robots must compete without any human intervention.

It was in Brighton, where Norman started his music career as a DJ. Fatboy Slim is the project of Quentin ªNormanº Cook. Rise to Fame While he was a DJ in Brighton, Norman got a phone call from an old school mate, inviting him to play in a band called the Housemartins. The Housemartins biggest hit was ªCaravan of Loveº which reached the British number one slot in 1986. The band split the following year. Different Projects After the split, Norman formed Beats International and had a British number one hit with ªDub Be Good to Meº in 1989. Soon afterwards Norman was forced to take a break after getting divorced and falling victim of a nervous breakdown. Two years later, Beats International was disbanded in favour of a new group called Freakpower.

  • Understanding Popular Music, Second Edition
Understanding Popular Music Understanding Popular Music is an accessible and comprehensive introduction to the history and meaning of popular music. It begins with a critical assessment of the different ways in which popular music has been studied and examines the difficulties and debates which surround the analysis of popular culture and popular music. Drawing on the recent work of music scholars and the popular music press, Roy Shuker explores key subjects which shape our experience of music, including music production, the music industry, music policy, fans, audiences and subcultures, the musician as ‘star’, music journalism, and the reception and consumption of popular music. This fully revised and updated second edition includes: • case studies and lyrics of artists such as Shania Twain, S Club 7, The Spice Girls and Fat Boy Slim • the impact of technologies including on-line delivery and the debates over MP3 and Napster • the rise of DJ culture and the changing idea of the ‘musician’ • a critique of gender and sexual politics and the discrimination which exists in the music industry • moral panics over popular music, including the controversies surrounding artists such as Marilyn Manson and Eminem • a comprehensive discography, guide to further reading and directory of websites. • 'Stayin' Alive in Da Club'1: the Illegality and Hyperreality of Mashups
Journal of the International Association for the Study of Popular Music doi:10.5429/2079-3871(2010)v1i2.8en : ‘Stayin’ Alive in Da Club’1 The Illegality and Hyperreality of Mashups Liam Maloy Institute of Popular Music, University of Liverpool [email protected] Abstract Mashups are a specific type of sample-based music where ‘new’ songs are created entirely from ‘old’ recordings. They contain no ‘original’ material and are the most overt examples of intertextuality in popular music. Vocal and instrumental parts are separated from musical backing through the process of ‘unmixing’. Many of these extracts circulate freely (and often anonymously) on the Internet awaiting recombination with other samples. Following a brief history of mashup pioneers and an overview of its key players, I utilise a range of theoretical approaches to raise questions about originality and the role of the author as it pertains to entirely-sampled music. Permeating the essay are considerations of modernism and postmodernism. I suggest that the collaging, self-referential, ahistoric, postmodernistic tendencies of mashup creation are tempered by the outward-looking, inclusive, modernistic tendencies of DJ culture. Key words: Mashups; sampling; hyperreality; intertextuality; collage. Introduction Every piece of music is composed of ideas from previous pieces of music. Mashups are just a bit more direct and honest about it. Originality is purely a matter of degree (Joel Roseman, 2007, p. xvii). For every artist, borrowing and stealing is your trade. It’s the way you regurgitate that borrowing and stealing that makes the difference (Rose from The Pipettes, quoted in Costa, 2007). Jake Shears from the Scissor Sisters is singing Take Your Mama (Universal, 2004) but the effect is decidedly unfamiliar.
