How long did you watch the bird(s)? c30+ minutes – multiple sightings of 2 birds (possibly 3) and then an additional sighting of 1 bird 20 minutes later whilst travelling, flying past and photographed. First and last date of occurrence: 11 August 2019 Distance to bird: Down to approximately 20-30 m Site Location: SE Tasmania. Approximately 42°50'36.30"S 148°24'46.23"E 22NM ENE of Pirates Bay, Eaglehawk Neck. We went north in an attempt to seek lighter winds and less swell and avoid heading straight into the strong SE winds and southerly swell. Habitat (describe habitat in which the bird was seen): Continental slope waters at a depth of approximately 260 fathoms. Sighting conditions (weather, visibility, light conditions etc.): Weather: Both days were mostly cloudy with occasional periods of bright sunshine. -

Stupendous world-class scenery abounded with a non-stop array of exciting and easy birding, fantastic endemics, and super mega Patagonian specialties. Also, as I promised from day one, everyone fell in love with Chile’s incredible array of large and colorful tapaculos; we enjoyed stellar views of all of the country’s 8 known species. Always enigmatic and confiding, the cute Chucao Tapaculo is in the Top 5 — Photo: Andrew Whittaker However, the icing on the cake of our tour was not birds but our simply amazing Puma encounters. Yet again we had another series of truly fabulous moments, even beating our previous record of 8 Pumas on the last day when I encountered a further 2 young Pumas on our way out of the park, making it an incredible 9 different Pumas! Our Puma sightings take some beating, as they have stood for the last three years at 6, 7, and 8. For sure none of us will ever forget the magical 45 minutes spent observing Amber meeting up with her four 1- year-old cubs as they joyfully greeted her return. -
Seabirds in Southeastern Hawaiian Waters

Box 1180, Alviso, California 95002 PETER PYLE, Point Reyes Bird Observatory,4990 Shoreline Highway, Stinson Beach, California 94970 Waters within 200 nautical miles (370 km) of North America and the Hawaiian Archipelago(the exclusiveeconomic zone) are consideredas withinNorth Americanboundaries by birdrecords committees (e.g., Erickson and Terrill 1996). Seabirdswithin 370 km of the southern Hawaiian Islands (hereafterreferred to as Hawaiian waters)were studiedintensively by the PacificOcean BiologicalSurvey Program (POBSP) during 15 monthsin 1964 and 1965 (King 1970). Theseresearchers replicated a tracklineeach month and providedconsiderable information on the seasonaloccurrence and distributionof seabirds in these waters. The data were primarily qualitative,however, because the POBSP surveyswere not basedon a strip of defined width nor were raw counts corrected for bird movement relative to that of the ship(see Analyses). As a result,estimation of density(birds per unit area) was not possible. From 1984 to 1991, using a more rigoroussurvey protocol, we re- surveyedseabirds in the southeasternpart of the region (Figure1). In this paper we providenew informationon the occurrence,distribution, effect of oceanographicfactors, and behaviorof seabirdsin southeasternHawai- ian waters, includingdensity estimatesof abundant species. We also document the occurrenceof six speciesunrecorded or unconfirmed in thesewaters, the ParasiticJaeger (Stercorarius parasiticus), South Polar Skua (Catharacta maccormicki), Tahiti Petrel (Pterodroma rostrata), Herald Petrel (P. heraldica), Stejneger's Petrel (P. Iongirostris), and Pycroft'sPetrel (P. pycrofti). STUDY AREA AND SURVEY PROTOCOL Our studywas a piggybackproject conducted aboard vessels studying the physicaloceanography of the easterntropical Pacific. -

DIET AND ASPECTS OF FAIRY PRIONS BREEDING AT SOUTH GEORGIA By P.A. PRINCE AND P.G. COPESTAKE ABSTRACT A subantarctic population of the Fairy Prion (Pachyprzla turtur) was studied at South Georgia in 1982-83. Full measurements of breeding birds are given, together with details of breeding habitat, the timing of the main breeding cycle events, and chick growth (weight and wing, culmen and tarsus length). Regurgitated food samples showed the diet to be mainly Crustacea (96% by weight), fish and squid comprising the rest. Of crustaceans, Antarctic krill made up 38% of items and 80% by weight. Copepods (four species, mostly Rhincalanus gigas) made up 39% of items but only 4% by weight; amphipods [three species, principally Themisto gaudichaudii made up 22% of items and 16% by weight. Diet and frequency of chick feeding are compared with those of Antarctic Prions and Blue Petrels at the same site; Fairy Prions are essentially intermediate. INTRODUCTION The Fairy Prion (Pachyptila turtur) is one of six members of a genus confined to the temperate and subantarctic regions of the Southern Hemisphere. With the Fulmar Prion (P. crassirostris), it forms the subgenus Pseudoprion. Its main area of breeding distribution is between the Antarctic Polar Front and the Subtropical Convergence. It is widespread in the New Zealand region, from the north of the North Island south to the Antipodes Islands and Macquarie Island, where only about 40 pairs survive (Brothers 1984). Although widespread in the Indian Ocean at the Prince Edward, Crozet and Kerguelen Islands, in the South Atlantic Ocean it is known to breed only on Beauchene Island (Falkland Islands) (Strange 1968, Smith & Prince 1985) and South Georgia (Prince & Croxall 1983). -

Today we continue to be awestruck by this constantly changing archipelago. As the Nazca Plate moves and new islands are formed, evolution is illustrated up close and personal. Visiting the Galápagos archipelago is a dream for all naturalists. From Quito we will fly to the island of Baltra. We then will make our way to our home for the next eight days, the Samba, a spacious and luxuriously designed motor sailing yacht with wide open and shaded sun decks, a fully stocked bar, and a library. The abundant marine life that visits these waters year-round, the Marine Iguanas that rule the rocky coastlines, and of course a unique group of birds make it easy to understand why this trip is a must for birders and natural history buffs. It is more immediately linked, however, with a collecting trip undertaken during part of the spring and summer of 1922 by Mr. Jos6 Gongalves Correia, of New Bedford, Mass., whose specimens, numbering some three hundred skins of twenty species, have all been received by The American Museum of Natural History. As Correia's predominant object was to acquire adequate series of water birds, the terrestrial species of the Cape Verdes are but scantily represented in his collection, which is supplemented, to a certain extent, by a small number of specimens obtained by the writer in 1912. Notwithstanding the relatively limited material available for study, it has been thought advisable to include within this paper a systematic list of all the birds known from the Cape Verde Islands. The latest faunal contribution is that of Salvadori (1899). Not only have addi- tions to the avifauna been made since that date, but also forms new to science, including several endemic races, have been described. More- over, numerous nomenclatural changes made necessary because of the researches of Hartert ('V6gel der palaarktischen Fauna,' 1910-22) and other workers increase the need for a new list. -

EPA Staff Report EEZ000006 Chatham Rock Phosphate Limited Marine Consent Application August 2014 Executive Summary On 14 May 2014, Chatham Rock Phosphate Ltd (CRP) lodged an application with the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) for a marine consent. Consent is being sought by CRP to mine phosphate nodules from the Chatham Rise, initially within CRP’s 820 km2 mining permit area for the first five years. In future, CRP’s proposed mining may occur within a wider area (5,207km2) for up to a further 30 years. The proposed mining activity, using a conventional drag-head to remove up to 0.5 m of the seabed, has the potential to adversely affect benthic communities, pelagic species, marine mammals, seabirds, human health, commercial fisheries and Māori/Moriori cultural interests. The EPA staff consider that the proposed mining activity would result in two primary environmental effects: the direct effects associated with the extraction of “living” and non-living natural material which will destroy the seabed down to a sediment depth of 0.5 m, and the discharge of mine tailings that would generate a suspended sediment plume, some of which would deposit on the seabed. The proposed marine consent area on the Chatham Rise provides habitat for a biologically diverse benthic community, including protected species, such as stony corals, other sensitive species including sponges, bryozoans and brachiopods and unique species such as giant isopods and bivalve molluscs. Many of these species perform important ecosystem services by providing habitat for a diverse and abundant range of other species. The proposed mining activity would result in the total destruction of these species and their habitats within the mined area, with the potential for minimal recovery (if any) of many of these species. -
