OUT ON FRIDAY April 14th: Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society: Simultonality GBCD 48 / 4030433604823 / label: tak:til / format: CD / USA – Popular GBLP 48 / 4030433604816 / label: tak:til / format: LP / USA – Popular The follow-up to Joshua Abrams's critically acclaimed 2015 album Magnetoception is here. Simultonality, credited to Joshua Abrams & Natural Information Society (NIS), is the first recording in the project’s nine year, four album history made by a regularly gigging manifestation rather than a special assembly of friends. Recorded in 2014 & 2015 in single takes by the full ensemble during & after tours of the U.S. & Canada, Simultonality sets out new pathways for Abrams & the NIS to reach the next summit, and once more affirms the project's unique approach to joining traditional musics, American minimalism and jazz with the Gnawa ceremonial instrument the guimbri. Listen to a track here.

75 Dollar Bill: Wood/Metal/Plastic/Pattern/ Rhythm/ Rock GBCD 47/ 4030433604724 / label: tak:til / format: CD / USA – Popular GBLP 47/ 4030433604717 / label: tak:til / format: LP / USA – Popular At last the European release of one of 2016’s most acclaimed albums. 75 Dollar Bill’s second full-length crashed onto many of last year’s most prestigious “Best Album” lists: The Wire, Uncut, The Village Voice/Pazz & Jop (and more). The NYC based duo of Rick Brown and Che Chen, creates hypnotic, pulsing music that weaves an ecstatic line from raw electric blues, Arabic modes and entrancing folk minimalism back to the streets of New York. Danyel Waro: monmon BUDA 860309 / 3341348603094 / label: Buda Musique / format: CD / Reunion – Popular Danyèl Waro has always stayed faithful to the acoustic tradition of , the blues of the island of Réunion, and he is recognized as its "hero". As a musician and poet, he sings Creole with unparalleled emotion: “Maloya, for me, is first and foremost about the word," he says. "I'm looking for the cadence, the image, the rhythm in the word. Maloya has put me in touch with Réunion, with its people, with our language.” album, monmon (the lower-case “m” is deliberate as it is not only for his own mother but for all "monmons”), resonates with all the spirituality and commitment of this outstanding artist. Listen to a track.

Kala Jula: Mande Kulu BUDA 860307 / 3341348603070 / label: Buda Musique / format: CD / Mali – Popular The music of Kala Jula ( Diabate, Vincent Zanetti, Helene Labarriere & Jacky Molard) owes much to the rich traditions of Mandé. While it most often expresses timeless truths, its roots go a long way back in time. With its rich griot inheritance, it draws on the source of the epics and the myths of the donsow hunters, privileged custodians of the defining values of Mandingo culture. "Juru náani", four strings, could have been the title of this record: for the first time guitars, n'goni and zena are mixed with those of violin and double bass in a new kind of Mandingo quartet. Listen to the title track.

OUT NOW: King Ayisoba: 1000 Can Die GBCD 44/ 4030433604427 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: CD / Ghana – Popular GBLP 44/ 4030433604410 / label: Glitterbeat Records / format: LP / Ghana – Popular Ghana’s ancient empire and the 21st century global express. The rhythms that created the past alongside the beats forging the present. In King Ayisoba, they all converge. Everything morphing into one. And on this new album they stand together, history and today, side by side. The tradition hewn from the future. The juxtaposition of the two on ‘1000 Can Die’ shows the irresistible drive of both sides. The thick, squelching bass and beats that push under the older rhythms of “Anka Yen Tu Kwai” are overtaken by the guluku and dundun drums that bring in “Yalma Dage Wanga,” its rapid-fire melody dictated by Ayisoba’s voice and two- Xango Music Distribution Release #7 – 2017 Pagina | 1

His music is an infusion of Traditional African music with a progressive attitude and modern sound of jazz, funk and soul music, creating music that is rhythmically and technically sophisticated, harmonically rich, and melodically compelling. Among his evident influences are George Benson, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, King Sunny Ade, and Fela Kuti. Afreekanism is a state of mind, it’s an embodiment of west African sound, it stays within the tradition while it systematically pushes its limbs and stretches without losing origin. Listen here.

Nils Berg Cinemascope: Searching for Amazing Talent from Punjab HOOBCD 60 / 7320470217818 / label: Hoob Records / format: CD / Sweden – Jazz HOOBLP 60 / 7320470217801 / label: Hoob Records / format: LP / Sweden – Jazz Nils Berg Cinemascope is a swedish jazz trio, basing their music and performances around a movie projector. They came up with the idea of making music from, and playing together with, video clips of musicians and singers from different parts of the world. The project sprang from a wish of putting together a bigger band than he could afford, and resulted in fascination with how they and their fellow musicians could actually bring together seemingly odd clips and form a new whole. On the album, which was recorded with live audience in Stockholm last January, we can, apart from the encounter with Balwinder, participate in a French harp course and hear a Romany woman from the Stockholm street scene, among other things. Listen here.

Offshore: Shorewards PPR 23 / 3359340161511 / label: Paker Prod Records / format: CD / France-Brittany – Folk This is one of the musical decantations of which the musical alchemist Jacques Pellen holds the secret. This collective with variable geometry, is a perfect match between four talented artists: the guitarist Jacques Pellen, the bassist Étienne Callac, the Algerian drummer Karim Ziad and the illustrious flautist Sylvain Barou. All are brought together under the aegis of a stylistic "crossover", where they intersect with pleasure, with balance and harmony, Celtic sounds, brilliant jazz, rock energy, Maghrebian swirls and African rhythms with hypnotic virtues. This multi-voice exploration, called Offshore, is an feast of colors and influences that looks like a universal quest. Listen to a track.

Maria Kalaniemi & Eero Grundstrom: Svalan AKEROCD 17 / 6420114006066 / label: Akero / format: CD / Finland – Folk Accordion artist Maria Kalaniemi’s album Svalan (Swallow), produced in cooperation with harmonium wizard Eero Grundström presents a spiritual landscape where the Finnish-Swedes meets the awe-inspiring nature of Northern Karelia: a combination which can be experienced through both the music on the record and the photo-collage of scenes around Salonkylä which accompanies it. The music was recorded in Maria Kalaniemi’s childhood home, an old post-war house in the Kilo district of Espoo.

Ercilia Costa: Memorias do Fado MF 3 / 9789728644864 / label: Tradisom / format: CD / – Fado Ercilia Costa was born in 1902 in a small fishing community near , but her natural talent as fadista brought her to the attention of a local fado house, where she sang already as a teenager. In the mid-20s she was already a well-known and admired fadista with a growing national popularity. Ercilia Costa was indisputably the first Portuguese international star and her status has since become legendary. Listen here.

Armandinho: Memorias do Fado MF 4 / 9789728644871 / label: Tradisom / format: CD / Portugal – Fado The belongs exclusively to Portugues culture and playing it virtuously has long been one of the most appreciated facets of Lusitanian music. Although the Portuguese guitar is frequently, and correctly, associated to fado, it is also a genre itself. Armandinho was one of the greatest Portuguese guitar players, and his career potential was far from being exhausted when, at the age of 55, he died in Lisbon in 1946. His influence was considerable then and still remains such today. Listen to a track.

To the Balkan trance that we knew was added a dark and quite fascinating poetry. A singer, a harp, flutes and percussion, they go from a song of Russian revolt to an incantation of black magic, from the lament of a wandering sailor to the katajjaq songs of the Inuit women, this opus is a tribute to the modern sorcerers. Here is Boukane, an album with a forbidden taste. Listen here.
