These digital developments in the humanities have lagged most other areas in academia, retaining a preference for the physical print. A team of Latin American scholars, faculty and digital librarians at a US institution of higher education has successfully collaborated since 2008 to publish the INTI: Revista de Literatura Hispánica journal’s original, peer- reviewed literature and art as open-access digital resources for teaching, learning and research. What began as a collaborative digitization project has in 7 years evolved into a full-scale digital publishing enterprise including print-on-demand for INTI’s 350 continuing print-subscription libraries. -

Maloney 2005 ABSTRACT This study explores the use of footnotes in fictional narratives. Footnotes and endnotes fall under the category of what Gérard Genette has labeled paratexts, or the elements that sit above or external to the text of the story. In some narratives, however, notes and other paratexts are incorporated into the story as part of the internal narrative frame. I call this particular type of paratext an artificial paratext. Much like traditional paratexts, artificial paratexts are often seen as ancillary to the text. However, artificial paratexts can play a significant role in the narrative dynamic by extending the boundaries of the narrative frame, introducing new heuristic models for interpretation, and offering alternative narrative threads for the reader to unravel. In addition, artificial paratexts provide a useful lens through which to explore current theories of narrative progression, character development, voice, and reliability. In the first chapter, I develop a typology of paratexts, showing that paratexts have been used to deliver factual information, interpretive or analytical glosses, and discursive narratives in their own right. Paratexts can originate from a number of possible sources, including allographic sources (editors, translators, publishers) and autographic sources— the author, writing as author, fictitious editor, or one or more of the narrators. -

UNIVERSIDAD NACIONAL DE SAN MARTÍN INSTITUTO DE ALTOS ESTUDIOS SOCIALES MAESTRÍA EN SOCIOLOGÍA DE LA CULTURA Y ANÁLISIS CULTURAL TESIS Ensayo y sociología: la producción intelectual de Juan José Sebreli, 1950-1970 Antonio Carlos Cámpora Director: Dr. Alejandro Blanco Noviembre de 2018 Resumen Uno de los aspectos del proceso de modernización cultural iniciado a partir del golpe de Estado de 1955 fue la transformación del ámbito académico. Entre otras iniciativas, en el marco de la Facultad de Filosofía y Letras de la Universidad de Buenos Aires, se creó en el año 1957 la primera carrera de Sociología del país, que en pocos años logró consolidarse. Ante el desarrollo de la sociología, algunos de los ensayistas dedicados a interpretar el mundo social continuaron escribiendo sus ensayos de una forma tradicional, pero otros intentaron incorporar elementos de la nueva disciplina en sus producciones, siendo uno de los casos más notables de esta segunda tendencia Juan José Sebreli. Este autor, que en los años cincuenta había iniciado su labor intelectual participando en distintas revistas culturales, en la década del sesenta integra de una manera particular la sociología en su producción ensayística. La presente tesis analiza la producción intelectual de Juan José Sebreli en el período 1950-1970. Con énfasis en los años sesenta, examina las diferentes intervenciones del autor en el mencionado período, tomando en cuenta distintos aspectos del campo intelectual en los que éstas se fueron produciendo, así como las relaciones del ensayista con otros agentes de dicho campo. 16 Kissing the Spiderwoman and Loving the Awful Grandmother: Popular Culture in Manuel Puig’s El beso de la mujer araña and Sandra Cisneros’s Caramelo CATHERINE LEEN Manuel Puig’s El beso de la mujer araña [The Kiss of the Spiderwoman] (1976) and Sandra Cisneros’s Caramelo [Caramel] (2002) would initially appear to have little in common. Puig’s novel is set against the backdrop of the violently repressive military dictatorship of the late 1970s and early 1980s in Argentina. Its protagonists, Marxist Valentín Arregui and gay window dresser Luis Alberto Molina, are diametrically opposed characters forced to share a prison cell. Caramelo is a sprawling multigenerational family drama that spans the era from the Mexican Revolution to 2002 and is set in Mexico, Spain, and the United States. The novel’s main protagonists are women, including the narrator Celaya ‘Lala’ Reyes and the Awful Grandmother, a character revered by Lala’s father, but feared or hated by the rest of the family. Despite their differences, the novels have a great deal in common, however, including a condemnation of patriarchal repression, a re-inscribing of stories often left out of official histories, and, most notably—the theme that will be addressed in this chapter—a shared love of popular culture. Before discussing the role of popular culture in the novels in more detail, we should pause to consider that comparing work by a Chicana/o author to that of a Latin American writer is something of a fraught endeavor. There is little agreement about the extent to which Chicana/o literature can be regarded as part of Latin American rather than North American literature. -
