ABSTRACT Spatial ecology of Puerto Rican boas (Epicrates inornatus, Boidae) was studied with radiotelemetry in a subtropical wet forest recovering from a major hurricane (7±9 yr previous) when Hurricane Georges struck. Different boas were studied during three periods relative to Hurricane Georges: before only; before and after; and after only. Mean daily movement per month increased throughout the three periods, indicating that the boas moved more after the storm than before. Radio-tagged boas also became more visible to observers after the hurricane. Throughout the three periods, the sexes differed in movements, with males moving greater distances per move and moving more frequently than females. Males showed a bimodal peak of movement during April and June in contrast to the females' July peak. Sexes did not differ in annual home range size, which had a median value of 8.5 ha (range 5 2.0±105.5 ha, N 5 18) for 95 percent adaptive kernal. Females spent more time on or below ground than did males, which were mostly arboreal. -

BETWEEN SPECIES: CHOREOGRAPHING HUMAN AND NONHUMAN BODIES JONATHAN OSBORN A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN DANCE STUDIES YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO MAY, 2019 ã Jonathan Osborn, 2019 Abstract BETWEEN SPECIES: CHOREOGRAPHING HUMAN AND NONHUMAN BODIES is a dissertation project informed by practice-led and practice-based modes of engagement, which approaches the space of the zoo as a multispecies, choreographic, affective assemblage. Drawing from critical scholarship in dance literature, zoo studies, human-animal studies, posthuman philosophy, and experiential/somatic field studies, this work utilizes choreographic engagement, with the topography and inhabitants of the Toronto Zoo and the Berlin Zoologischer Garten, to investigate the potential for kinaesthetic exchanges between human and nonhuman subjects. In-situ conservation of the Jamaican boa is seriously hindered by the lack of information on demographic and ecological parameters as well as by a poor understanding of the population structure and species distribution in the wild. Here, using nine nuclear micro- satellite loci and a fragment of the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene from 87 wild-born individuals, we present the first molecular genetic analyses focusing on the diversity and structure of the natural populations of the Jamaican boa. A model-based clustering analysis of multilocus microsatellite genotypes identifies three groups that are also signif- icantly differentiated on the basis of F-statistics. Similarly, haplotypic network reconstruc- tion methods applied on the cytochrome b haplotypes isolated here identify two well-differentiated haplogroups separated by four to six fixed mutations. -

The Lecture this year is being organized in partnership with our member and long standing partners at the Jamaica Conservation and Development Trust (JCDT). JCDT has been a major player not only in Protected Areas and Management of the Blue and John Crow Mountain National Park, but also in the area of public awareness and education with features such as the National Green Expo held every other year. Like all our work over the last 18 years, we have balanced the Public Lectures between our two major areas of focus – Child Development and Environmental Management. This year, our environmental lecture will focus on issues of biodiversity and human impact on ecological habitats. Our lecturer, Dr. Byron Wilson is a Senior Lecturer in the University of the West Indies. He is an expert in conservation biology and has dedicated his research to the ecology and conservation of the critically endangered Jamaican Iguana and other rare endemic reptile species. In addition to Dr. Wilson’s work, the EFJ has partnered with Government, Researchers and Conservationists to study and record critical information and data on Endemic and Endangered Species across Jamaica, including the establishment of the UWI/EFJ Biodiversity Centre in Port Royal, the Virtual Herbarium and the publication of the “Endemic Trees of Jamaica” book. -
