ABSTRACT Spatial ecology of Puerto Rican boas (Epicrates inornatus, Boidae) was studied with radiotelemetry in a subtropical wet forest recovering from a major hurricane (7±9 yr previous) when Hurricane Georges struck. Different boas were studied during three periods relative to Hurricane Georges: before only; before and after; and after only. Mean daily movement per month increased throughout the three periods, indicating that the boas moved more after the storm than before. Radio-tagged boas also became more visible to observers after the hurricane. Throughout the three periods, the sexes differed in movements, with males moving greater distances per move and moving more frequently than females. Males showed a bimodal peak of movement during April and June in contrast to the females' July peak. Sexes did not differ in annual home range size, which had a median value of 8.5 ha (range 5 2.0±105.5 ha, N 5 18) for 95 percent adaptive kernal. Females spent more time on or below ground than did males, which were mostly arboreal. -

CONCLUSION As used in Penal Code section 653o to identify an endangered snake, "python" does not include "anaconda." 1 82-811 ANALYSIS Penal Code section 653o, subd. (a), provides as follows: "It is unlawful to import into this state for commercial purposes, to possess with intent to sell, or to sell within the state, the dead body, or any part or product thereof, of any alligator, crocodile, polar bear, leopard, ocelot, tiger, cheetah, jaguar, sable antelope, wolf (Canis lupus), zebra, whale, cobra, python, sea turtle, colobus monkey, kangaroo, vicuna, sea otter, free-roaming feral horse, dolphin or porpoise (Delphinidae), Spanish lynx, or elephant." "Any person who violates any provision of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and shall be subject to a fine of not less than one thousand dollars ($1,000) and not to exceed five thousand dollars ($5,000) or imprisonment in the county jail for not to exceed six months, or both such fine and imprisonment, for each violation." Hillis* Section of Integrative Biology and Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX 78712, USA Received 4 February 2002; received in revised form 18 May 2002 Abstract Four New World genera of dwarf boas (Exiliboa, Trachyboa, Tropidophis, and Ungaliophis) have been placed by many syste- matists in a single group (traditionally called Tropidophiidae). However, the monophyly of this group has been questioned in several studies. Moreover, the overall relationships among basal snake lineages, including the placement of the dwarf boas, are poorly understood. We obtained mtDNAsequence data for 12S, 16S, and intervening tRNA–valgenes from 23 species of snakes repre- senting most major snake lineages, including all four genera of New World dwarf boas. We then examined the phylogenetic position of these species by estimating the phylogeny of the basal snakes. Our phylogenetic analysis suggests that New World dwarf boas are not monophyletic. Instead, we find Exiliboa and Ungaliophis to be most closely related to sand boas (Erycinae), boas (Boinae), and advanced snakes (Caenophidea), whereas Tropidophis and Trachyboa form an independent clade that separated relatively early in snake radiation. Our estimate of snake phylogeny differs significantly in other ways from some previous estimates of snake phy- logeny. For instance, pythons do not cluster with boas and sand boas, but instead show a strong relationship with Loxocemus and Xenopeltis. -

Drawing from critical scholarship in dance literature, zoo studies, human-animal studies, posthuman philosophy, and experiential/somatic field studies, this work utilizes choreographic engagement, with the topography and inhabitants of the Toronto Zoo and the Berlin Zoologischer Garten, to investigate the potential for kinaesthetic exchanges between human and nonhuman subjects. ABSTRACT The Pacific Boas, genus Candoia Gray, 1842, have been subject of intense taxonomic scrutiny in recent years. This has included dissections of the three widely recognized putative species. Candoia carinata has been most recently split into three full species and a total of ten regionally distinct subspecies (Smith et al. 2001). C. aspera split into three subspecies (Hoser, 2013) and C.bibroni has long been recognized as consisting of two named subspecies, although one of the used names has been misapplied by various authors and is in fact probably a nomen nudem. Taxonomic treatments of the genus (e.g. McDowell 1979) and molecular treatments of the genus (e.g. Austin 2000) have tended to uphold these divisions and shown clearly that if anything, the taxonomic diversity of the group has been grossly understated. Hoser 2013, utilized these results and formally described Candoia aspera iansimpsoni, this being the most recent addition to the genus. Furthermore, by using existing available nomenclature Hoser (2013) placed each of the three well-known putative species into subgenera. Hoser (2013) also for the first time moved all species into the newly erected family Candoiidae Hoser, 2013 as distinct from the Boidae. -

ABSTRACT A new erycine snake, Calamagras turkestanicus n.sp., known by about fifty trunk vertebrae is described from the early Eocene Andarak 2 locality, Kirghizia. It shows close similarity to C. gallicus Rage, 1977 from the early KEYWORDS Calamagras, Eocene of France and C. primus Hecht, 1959 from the middle Eocene of the Ervcinae, United States. New taxon represents the first reliable record of Calamagras Boidae, early Eocene, from the Paleogene of Asia. The presence of Aniliidae, reported previously Kirghizia. from the same locality, is not confirmed by new material. Ce nouveau taxon est la première mention de Boidae, Eocène inférieur, Calamagras dans le Paléogène d'Asie.
