The diminutive locomotive, 1970, is similar to the sleeping cars recently acquired by the B.C. completed by EMD on Aug. 2, 1940, serial no. 1134, is a Model 40. It was Transportation Museum (see Short Items). The eight section, two acquired from EMD's La Grange, Illinois plant in Feb., 1951. The car, the last of its class remaining on the TTC restoration at the Edmonton Radial Railway Society Museum, on Sept. 2, roster, was being trucked to Birmingham, Alabama, from whose transit 1981, some 30 years after its withdrawal from service. Like many street system the 1947-built Pullman PCC was bought in 1953. Timeline of the Harbour Grace Railway Station
Timeline of the Harbour Grace Railway 1847 In its May 22 edition, the Morning Post recommends building the first rail line in Newfoundland. The Post advocates the railway connecting with a steamer, which could serve the populous centres of Conception Bay. 1865 The Legislature passes a resolution offering to give land and grants to any company willing to construct a railway in Newfoundland. 1868 Sanford Fleming, engineer for the Canadian Intercolonial Railway, makes a proposal to the Newfoundland Government for a trans-island railway. At his own expense, Fleming sends an engineer to determine if a Newfoundland railway is feasible. 1874 Frederic B.T. Carter is elected premier. 1875 Carter recommends money be voted for a railway survey. Supervised by Fleming, this survey advocates a short line terminating at St. George’s, on Newfoundland’s west coast. Due to its location on the French Treaty Shore, the British Government rejects this location as a western terminus. 1878 William V. Whiteway leads the Liberals to victory in the general election on a platform that includes a promise of action on a railway. Whiteway appoints a joint committee of the Legislative Council and House of Assembly to study the question. 1880 The committee report of April 2 recommends a narrow-gauge (3’6”) railway be constructed from St. John’s to Halls Bay, with a branch line to Harbour Grace. The survey commences in the spring under the supervision of Sanford Fleming. On June 26, the inhabitants of Foxtrap, Conception Bay, believing they will lose their land to the railway, stone surveying engineers, take away their instruments and drive them from their work. -

" The digest includes information on the cities visited, lessons learned, and discussions of policies and practices that could be used in the United States. This digest was prepared by Tracy E. Dunleavy, Eno Transportation Foundation, Inc., the administrator of the project, on the basis of reports filed by the mission participants. (Hons.), M.A. A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Public Policy Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2016 Mark Douglas Davis Abstract This thesis examines the historical public policy circumstances surrounding the Government of Canada’s decision to commercialize Canadian National (CN) Railways, as well as federal airports and ports over the period 1975 to 2000. Its focus is on testing one specific empirical hypothesis: That the commercialization of federal airport and port assets between 1975 and 2000 occurred primarily due to: (i) federal government concerns over the growing size of the national debt and deficit; and (ii) the emergence of the neoliberal ideology in Canada and its growing influence throughout federal policy making, as witnessed by the swift 1995 privatization of CN Railways. In particular, this thesis considers the role and influence of various policy factors, such as efficiencies, governance challenges, organizational cultures, stakeholder behaviours, ideological pressures, and political realities encountered by senior federal transportation bureaucrats and the political leadership during this period. The selection of CN Railways, airports, and ports also provides a window into Transport Canada’s repeated attempts at developing an integrated and multi-modal national transportation policy. This thesis conducts a rigorous, forward-looking deductive analysis using a meso institutional framework to examine the interactions of the major micro and macro circumstances surrounding federal transportation commercialization. The three modal case studies apply the meso framework to each unique case with special consideration of the context and causality of each major reform. -

CENTRE FOR NEWFOUNDLAND STUDIES TOTAL OF 10 PAGES ONLY MAY BE XEROXED (Without Author's Permission) The Adoption of the Wood Stove as an Agent of Material Culture in Newfoundland: A Historical Geography By © Jennifer Bose A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts Department of Geography Memorial University of Newfoundland September 2005 St. John's Newfoundland ABSTRACT This thesis examines the methods by which the Newfoundland population provided themselves with the warmth essential to survival, from the seventeenth century onwards. The provision of warmth was crucial to life on the island. It underlay all other activities and imposed its patterns on such fundamental geographical properties as t he development of settlement and ecology. Two main components of creating this warmth were firewood from local forests and the cast iron stove, both of which are discussed here. Local forest resources were the staple fuel for much of the Newfoundland population. They were a fundamental component of seasonal work patterns and ofthe cashless subsistence economy. Three potential types of fuel wood shortages are identi fied, and the extent to which each may have occurred in Newfoundland is discussed. The adop tion of the new technology of the cast iron stove is also examined, from its first appearance in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries to its common acceptance in homes by 1870. A variety of sources contribute to a preliminary picture of the heating and cooking technology used, and of the utilization of fuel wood resources.
