Chile y América en perspectiva histórica Guía de Materia N°7 El proceso de Independencia El proceso de independencia de las colonias americanas comenzó mucho antes de los sucesos de 1810 y se prolongó todavía durante algunos años hasta consolidarse. Las causas que explican este proceso son de naturalezas distintas. Mientras algunas son de carácter estructural, es decir, transformaron en el largo plazo las formas de relación entre las colonias americanas y España; otras, obedecieron a cambios coyunturales, tales como la crisis de la monarquía española. Estos cambios pueden clasificarse, además, entre causas externas y causas internas. Entre las primeras, está la difusión de las ideas de la Ilustración, la independencia de Estados Unidos y la Revolución francesa. Entre los factores internos está el debilitamiento de la Corona española y el creciente descontento de los criollos americanos con la aplicación de las reformas que impulsaron los reyes borbones. “Proclamación y Jura de la Independencia de Chile” (oleo de Fray Pedro Subercaseaux) Los énfasis que se colocan en las distintas aproximaciones históricas son diferentes; sin embargo, todas coinciden en señalar los siguientes procesos y acontecimientos previos como antecedentes a considerar: La Ilustración, movimiento intelectual europeo que surgió en el siglo XVIII y que cuestionó a la sociedad existente en ese momento. Afirmó la igualdad y libertad como principios básicos de la sociedad. Las ideas ilustradas penetraron en América y sus colonias: mediante sus viajes, las elites criollas tomaron contacto con estas nuevas ideas que de una u otra manera contribuyeron a criticar el dominio español sobre América. La Revolución Francesa (1789 – 1799), que puso fin a la monarquía absoluta en Francia y llevó a la práctica las ideas de la ilustración.

Abstract: Hailed as a milestone in the genre of the dictator novel, Mario Vargas Llosa’s The Feast of the Goat (2001) is a political thriller that portrays the tyrannical regime of General Rafael Trujillo. It is an artistic reconstruction of Trujillo’s rise to power, his infamous totalitarianism and finally his murder. The research paper analyses the nexus between history and fiction as an important trope in the novel. Appropriating historical data from numerous biographical accounts and newspapers, the novel re-envisions the social psychology, personal motives and the circumstances during ‘The Era’. It is important to note that Vargas Llosa deems literature as a forceful mode that reimagines the subtle nuances of the past that history cannot. The paper further explores the connection between power and violence as an inevitable means to political corruption and sexual trafficking of women in dictatorial regimes. Deliberating upon the problematic of power-politics and censorship, the paper analyses the role of the novelist in the reconstruction of the past so as to understand the present and envision a better future.

    Martina Urioste-Buschmann Literary Representations of Fear and Anger during the Trujillato: An Approach to the Female Performing of Emotions in the Novels In the Time of the Butterflies and The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao Leibniz Universität Hannover, Alemania [email protected] Since the dictatorial era of Rafael Leónidas Trujillo Molina came to an end in 1961, various texts of fictional prose have contributed to the Dominican processing of history in terms of artistic inscriptions into a collective memory. In particular, from the late 1990s, literary representations of the Trujillato have been a firm focus of local Dominican writers. This tendency is apparent in the novels published during this period. Diógenes Valdez’s Retrato de dinosaurios en la Era de Trujillo (1997), Marcio Veloz Maggiolo’s Uña y carne. Memorias de la virilidad (1999) and Ángela Hernández’s Mudanza de los sentidos (2001) are just a few examples of this common focus. However, this literary processing regarding one of the darkest chapters of Dominican history has not been promoted solely by local Dominican authors. At the same time, American- Dominican authors have helped give literary expression to this era of political persecution, terror and censorship, which probably claimed more than 30,000 lives.1 Writing in English, “Dominicanyorks” (Herzog 143) managed to situate their texts within a US-American minority literature that was also received by a mainstream audience (Cocco de Filippis 255).     1 Alejandra Bronfman Radio Wars and Revolution in the Caribbean, 1959 Abstract For most places in the Caribbean, the term Cold War fails to describe the contentious, noisy, violent politics of the 1950s and ‘60s. In the rapidly changing political contexts of 1957–62, Haiti’s Francois Duvalier and Cuban Fidel Castro rose to power, while in the Dominican Republic Rafael Trujillo’s regime weakened and ended with his assassination in 1961. Actors across the ideological spectrum engaged in transnational ‘Radio Wars’ in their efforts to both undermine and prop up particular regimes. This article will explore those radio wars, understanding them not just as an enactment of the complex politics of the day, but also as the expression of a par- ticular kind of utopian imagining of radio’s potential for political mobilisation. It considers the politics of clandestine broadcasting across ideological, racial and national boundaries in the 1950s and ‘60s Caribbean. Expanding on and engaging a burgeoning literature on radio in Latin America and the Caribbean, attention to ‘Radio Wars’ adds fresh perspectives to histories of the Cold War, decolonisation, and the soundscapes of dictatorship and empire. More pre- cisely, it moves beyond a Soviet-US binary and considers the role of broadcasting and propa- ganda in the making of an inter-Caribbean war of frequencies.
