November 2017 Magazine of Giffnock South Parish Church November TheThe SentinelSentinel 2017 Volume 55 No 8 Have you got your poppy? Magazine of Giffnock South Parish Church REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY is on November 12th and the morning service will commence at 10.55am. Afterwards there will be a brief service and the laying of a wreath at the war memorial at the foot of Greenhill Avenue (pictured). Reappraisal 2017 - the Treasurer, Iain Grimmond writes…... I am delighted to report that once again the congregation of Giffnock South have risen to the challenge of Reappraisal and shown their usual generosity. To date gifts totalling £25,392 have been received, which, together with the tax recoverable under Gift Aid of £5,069, gives a total of £30,461 – a tremendous response by over 240 members. In addition, many new standing orders will increase our regular income next year. This will enable us to continue to meet our financial commitments for another year, keeping Giffnock South at the heart of our community as well as playing our full part in all the work of the Church of Scotland. Thanks are due to everyone who responded, to the Elders who visited their Districts and to Jan, Alistair Park and the Finance Committee for all their preparatory work. You may well attend the church every Sunday but you will never have seen this view of the complicated pipework underneath - until now - as Sentinel reveals to you here and on page 7 what is there - with an enlightening description by our long--suffering Fabric Convener, Willie Dunbar. Page 2 There are two items which, to our mind, need emphasising, the first is the launch of ‘Sing Well’ because singing is good for you and everybody can sing. It’s open for everybody and anybody - church member or not. So come along and enjoy. The second is the Men’s Lunch Club which next meets on November 7th at 12.30 at Babbo’s. This is your chance to meet up with friends old (!) and new -just contact Graeme Whyte on 638 2966. and get a doggy bag for me Contributions for the December edition of The Sentinel should be sent to the Church office or emailed to [email protected] by 13th November GENERAL ASSEMBLY NEWS The next moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland has been announced and it’s the Rev Susan Brown minister of Dornoch Cathedral who will take up her year’s duties in May. She follows in the steps of a previous minister of Dornoch Cathedral, The Very Rev Dr James Simpson who was moderator in 1994/5. GIFFNOCK SOUTH NEWS The MEN’s LUNCH CLUB got of to a flying start on Tuesday 3rd October when no less than 21 hungry men Some of the lunchers got stuck in at Babbo’s. Next meeting (eating!) will also be at Babbo’s at 12.30pm on 7th November. Scientific evidence has shown that singing is good for your health which is as good a reason as any to come along to Giffnock South at 1.45pm on Wednesday 22nd November for the second ‘wee sing’ with ‘Sing Well’ the new initiative for the local community. PRIZE QUIZ Congratulations to Avril Holland who won September’s quiz with the only all-correct entry. The answers are shown below. The remainder of the Record down to 31st December 1829 is in the General Register House, but from that date to the present day it will be found at the Commissary Office. Copyright 1989 by Martha & Bill Reamy Printed in the U.S.A. Published 1989 by FAMILY LINE PUBLICATIONS INTRODUCTION Every effort has been made to achieve accuracy in this project, but interpreting the enumerator's hand-written material has posed problems. As an aid to deciphering many poorly written and misspelled names, the "Wood's Baltimore City Directory, 1861" was consulted. When an entry was found in the Directory where the first name and occupation agreed with the Census listing and the surname appears to be similar, the City Directory spelling was added in brackets in the text and added to the index. The original enumeration at the National Archives was consulted for all proofreading. The enumerator took great liberties in the spelling of surnames. Sometimes when an entry for a household carried over from one page to another the enumerator changed the spelling of the surname. We have retained both spellings in this book. Surnames were occasionally spelled phonetically, e.g. the name written as Knobloch in the Baltimore City Directory appears as Noblock in the census. The user is cautioned to check the index for all possible variations. In some sections it is obvious that the information was transcribed from the original record column by column rather than across the page, line by line, with frequent misalignment of the data on a particular line.

He was educated at the local school and went to Edinburgh University at the age of 14. Too young to graduate, he became a Licentiate of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in 1830 before graduating in 1832. He became Professor of Midwifery at Edinburgh University in 1840, Physician to Queen Victoria in 1847, President of the Royal College of Physicians in 1850 and Baronet in 1866. A man of enormous energy and great personal charm, Simpson was a keen controversialist and much loved physician. His contributions to obstetrics are overshadowed by his discovery of the anaesthetic effects of chloroform in November 1847. After ether was discovered in 1846, Simpson was quick to use it to relieve the pains of labour, earning the gratitude of countless women and the condemnation of some members of the church and the medical profession. Simpson was a doughty advocate of the cause of general anaesthesia and his final vindication came when Queen Victoria had chloroform at the birth of Prince Leopold in 1853.

PUBLISHED FAMILY HISTORIES [Over the years The Fife Family History Society Journal has reviewed many published Fife family histories. We have gathered them all together here, and will add to the file as more become available. Many of the family histories are hard to find, but some are still available on the antiquarian market. Others are available as Print on Demand; while a few can be found as Google books] GUNDAROO (1972) By Errol Lea-Scarlett, tells the story of the settlement of the Township of Gundaroo in the centre of the Yass River Valley of NSW, AUS, and the families who built up the town. One was William Affleck (1836-1923) from West Wemyss, described as "Gundaroo's Man of Destiny." He was the son of Arthur Affleck, grocer at West Wemyss, and Ann Wishart, and encourged by letters from the latter's brother, John (Joseph Wiseman) Wishart, the family emigrated to NSW late in October 1854 in the ship, "Nabob," with their children, William and Mary, sole survivors of a family of 13, landing at Sydney on 15 February 1855. The above John Wishart, alias Joseph Wiseman, the son of a Fife merchant, had been convicted of forgery in 1839 and sentenced to 14 years transportation to NSW. On obtaining his ticket of leave in July 1846, he took the lease of the Old Harrow, in which he established a store - the "Caledonia" - and in 1850 added to it a horse-powered mill at Gundaroo some 18 months later. He was the founder of the family's fortunes, and from the 1860s until about 1900 the Afflecks owned most of the commercial buildings in the town.
