Have you got your poppy?

Magazine of Giffnock South Parish Church REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY is on November 12th and the morning service will commence at 10.55am. Afterwards there will be a brief service and the laying of a wreath at the war memorial at the foot of Greenhill Avenue (pictured).

Reappraisal 2017 - the Treasurer, Iain Grimmond writes…... I am delighted to report that once again the congregation of Giffnock South have risen to the challenge of Reappraisal and shown their usual generosity. To date gifts totalling £25,392 have been received, which, together with the tax recoverable under Gift Aid of £5,069, gives a total of £30,461 – a tremendous response by over 240 members. In addition, many new standing orders will increase our regular income next year. This will enable us to continue to meet our financial commitments for another year, keeping Giffnock South at the heart of our community as well as playing our full part in all the work of the . Thanks are due to everyone who responded, to the Elders who visited their Districts and to Jan, Alistair Park and the Finance Committee for all their preparatory work.

You may well attend the church every Sunday but you will never have seen this view of the complicated pipework underneath - until now - as Sentinel reveals to you here and on page 7 what is there - with an enlightening description by our long--suffering Fabric Convener, Willie Dunbar. Page 2 There are two items which, to our mind, need emphasising, the first is the launch of ‘Sing Well’ because singing is good for you and everybody can sing. It’s open for everybody and anybody - church member or not. So come along and enjoy. The second is the Men’s Lunch Club which next meets on November 7th at 12.30 at Babbo’s. This is your chance to meet up with friends old (!) and new -just contact Graeme Whyte on 638 2966. and get a doggy bag for me

Contributions for the December edition of The Sentinel should be sent to the Church office or emailed to [email protected] by 13th November

The twin boilers The control panel containing the controlling computer

One location in Giffnock South which, for obvious reasons of safety, is out of bounds to all but a few, (who have good reason to be there), is down in the depths of the Boiler House. It is a place which perhaps would not be out of place in the engine room of the ‘Waverley’ steamer and, from the photographs (above), you will note the two large gas-fired boilers, the multitude of insulated pipes, pumps and valves all of which serve to distribute Some of the pipework hot water to the radiators in the sanctuary, the halls and rooms of our church. There are 5 Zones in the network, Zone 1 being the Sanctuary, Zone 2 the Office, Zone 3 the Eglinton Hall, Zone 4 the Vestry and upstairs rooms and Zone 5 the Yoga Class at Giffnock South Winton Hall, with each Zone having its own master and slave pumps and valves. We Parish Church have a very active church and a glance at the chart in the corridor will reveal the busy schedule of the church, halls and rooms with many activities taking place requiring Stretch, breathe, relax. heating, or no heating, at specific times in specific locations which vary on every day of the week. This is all controlled by a computerised system which is pre-set but can be altered manually when a particular event is altered or an additional event added. The controls are linked to the ambient temperature outside the church and, without this degree of control, the cost of heating in the church would be significantly greater. Of course, things can go wrong and a part of the main control unit has been giving problems in recent weeks. This however has now been isolated and the part which malfunctioned replaced. There should now be a more consistent level of heating throughout the church buildings, howeve it has to be understood that there will be times when an activity requiring heating follows on directly after an activity without heating, and vice-versa, which can lead to a delay in that location reaching the required temperature.. wgd All levels welcome.
