McIntosh, J.Thomas *Yuill, Hugh 11 CHAPTER TWELVE THE COVENANTERS By WILLIAM A. FLEMING Covington Mill and the Covenanters For centuries, generations of a family by the name of Fisher lived in Covington Mill where they were both farmers and millers. From their surname we can assume that their early ancestors had been fishermen. The use of surnames in Scotland only started in the 11th century having been introduced to England the previous century from France. The name was frequently recorded in ancient documents in the Upper Ward of Lanarkshire, - Andrew Fisher (Andro Fischar) was a burgess in Lanark in 1488. The Fishers were tenants in the Mill from before the introduction of the Old Parish Registers which date from the 1600s. Their simplistic lifestyle of working the land and grinding the grain in good years and bad was in contrast to that of their superiors, the Lindsays of Covington who in past times were more notorious for their law breaking activities and their great feuds with the Somervilles of Carnwath, many resulting in murders. The Mill at Covington was on the Glade Burn which rises near the summit of Tinto passing through Eastend and being joined by the Cleugh Burn

EDITED BY FRANCIS J. GRANT, W.S., ROTHESAY HERALD AND LYON CLEKK. EDINBURGH : PRINTED FOR THE SOCIETY BY JAMES SKINNER & COMPANY. 1899. EDINBURGH '. PRINTED BY JAMES SKINNER AND COMPANY. PREFATORY NOTE. This volume completes the Index to this Commissariot, so far as it is proposed by the Society to print the same. It includes all Testaments recorded before 31st December 1800. The remainder of the Record down to 31st December 1829 is in the General Register House, but from that date to the present day it will be found at the Commissary Office. The Register for the Eighteenth Century shows a considerable falling away in the number of Testaments recorded, due to some extent to the Local Registers being more taken advantage of On the other hand, a number of Testaments of Scotsmen dying in England, the Colonies, and abroad are to be found. The Register for the years following on the Union of the Parliaments is one of melancholy interest, containing as it does, to a certain extent, the death-roll of the ill-fated Darien Expedition. SC5». S, f # I PUBLICATIONS OF THE SCOTTISH HISTORY SOCIETY THIRD SERIES VOLUME LI WIGTOWNSHIRE CHARTERS I960 WIGTOWNSHIRE CHARTERS Edited by R. C. REID, LL.D. EDINBURGH Printed by T. and A. Constable Ltd. Printers to the University of Edinburgh for the Scottish History Society 1960 Printed in Great Britain PREFACE This volume represents some ten years voluntary work undertaken for the National Register of Archives since that body was first formed. It has involved the examination, calendaring and indexing of all documents prior to the year 1600 of the following collections presently lodged in the Register House: Charters of the Earl of Galloway, Lochnaw (Agnew) Charters, Logan (McDowell) Charters, and Barnbarroch (Vaus) Charters; in addition to the following collections, still in private hands, Mochrum Park (Dunbar) Charters, Myrton (McCulloch) Charters, Monreith (Maxwell) Charters, the Craichlaw and Shennanton Papers, and the Cardoness and Kirkconnell Charters, as well as much unpublished material in the Scottish Record Office. I have to express my thanks to the owners and custodians for giving me the necessary access and facilities. In the presentation and editing of these documents I have received ready assistance from many quarters, but I would fail in my duty if I did not mention especially Mrs. A. I. Dunlop, LL.D., and Dr. Gordon Donaldson, who have ungrudgingly drawn on their wide experience as archivists, and Mr. Athol Murray, LL.B., of the Scottish Record Office, who has called my attention to documents and entries in the public records and even undertaken a search of the Registers of the Archbishops of York.
