Covering letter for comments from committee members on David Christison’s report on Roman studies in Scotland. Recommends that excavations should be carried out in tandem with those on stone circles in Aberdeenshire & Mearns and that the committee members should supervise on a rota basis. Suggests that John Findlay should be invited to join the committee. 2/3 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report, signed J H Cunningham and dated 31 May 1902. Recommends that Christison’s valuable list of Roman sites should be printed in the Proceedings, that the acreage of each fort be provided, and that sites should be chosen for excavation south of the Tay and in NE Scotland. 2/4 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report, signed Thomas Ross and dated 2 June 1902, at 65 Frederick Street, Edinburgh. Suggests adding more references to past work. Early indications of location of fort at Cramond. Recommends excavation at Rough Castle. 2/5 Handwritten ‘Memorandum’ dated 21 June 1902 and signed Arthur Mitchell, with comments on Christison’s report. Recommens excavation at Rough Castle. Mentions John Abercromby’s offer of financial support for prehistoric excavations and suggests that a committee should be set up with Abercromby as convener. 2/6 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report by George MacDonald. Agrees that list of sites should be published. ‘In Scotland generally, interest in things Roman is much more general than interest in things prehistoric.’ Sought Haverfield’s opinion and encloses his comments. 2/7 Typewritten comments from Frances Haverfield, apparently edited in red ink by MacDonald. Importance of the Antonine Wall and work at Rough Castle. North of the Wall the extent of the Roman advance needs to be ascertained. Recommends test excavations on sites. Two sheets held together by textile tape. 2/8 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report by Robert Munro, dated 23 May 1902. Doubts financial viability of excavations. Support’s Abercromby’s proposal for work on prehistoric sites. 2/9 Handwritten comments on Christison’s report by John Abercromby and edited in red ink. Recommends publication of Christison’s report, and emphasizes need to remember needs of prehistoric archaeology. Includes suggestion that some prehistoric forts may be earlier than the Iron Age. Proposes two Exploration Funds: ‘one devoted to the elucidation of our native prehistoric antiquities; the other to the exploration of Roman stations and camps. To the first I am ready to contribute from £150 to £200 a year for the rest of my life or as long as I have the necessary funds at my disposal.’ 2/10 White envelope in which Christison’s report was distributed to members of the Excavations Committee, with note initialed by Cunningham, ‘Please forward, with your comments, to the Member whose name follows yours on the list’.
