    Strain-induced time reversal breaking and half quantum vortices near a putative superconducting tetra-critical point in Sr2RuO4 Andrew C. Yuan,1 Erez Berg,2 and Steven A. Kivelson1 1Department of Physics, Stanford University, Stanford, CA 93405, USA 2Department of Condensed Matter Physics, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot 7610001, Israel It has been shown [1] that many seemingly contradictory experimental findings concerning the superconducting state in Sr2RuO4 can be accounted for as resulting from the existence of an assumed tetra-critical point at near ambient pressure at which dx2−y2 and gxy(x2−y2) superconducting states are degenerate. We perform both a Landau-Ginzburg and a microscopic mean-field analysis of the effect of spatially varying strain on such a state. In the presence of finite xy shear strain, the superconducting state consists of two possible symmetry-related time-reversal symmetry (TRS) preserving states: d ± g. However, at domain walls between two such regions, TRS can be broken, resulting in a d + ig state. More generally, we find that various natural patterns of spatially varying strain induce a rich variety of superconducting textures, including half-quantum fluxoids. These results may resolve some of the apparent inconsistencies between the theoretical proposal and various experimental observations, including the suggestive evidence of half-quantum vortices [2]. I. INTRODUCTION If it happens that superconducting (SC) orders with two distinct symmetries are comparably fa- vorable for some microscopic reason, it is possible to have a two-parameter phase diagram (e.g. T and isotropic strain, 0) that exhibits a multicriti- cal point (e.g. at = ? and T = T ?) at which the transition temperatures, Tc, of the two different or- (a) (b) ders coincide, as shown in Fig.

There is certainly no shortage of books on the subject. Several general surveys of the witch trials and numerous regional and micro studies have been published for an English-speaking readership. While the quality of publications on witchcraft has been high, some regions and topics have received less attention over the years. The aim of this series is to help illuminate these lesser known or little studied aspects of the history of witchcraft and magic.     Meiji Journal of Political Science and Economics Volume 3, 2014 The Enlightenment Idea of Improvement and its Discontents: The Case of Orkney in Eighteenth-Century Scotland Hiroyuki Furuya Associate Professor of the History of Economic Thought, Tokushima Bunri University, Japan Abstract The aim of this paper is to offer a view of improvement emerged in the age of Enlightenment in Scotland. This paper examines an economic debate that took place in the context of a bitterly-fought legal battle referred to as the Pundlar Process (1733–1759). It was contested between the Earl of Morton, who was a feudal superior of Orkney and Shetland, and local lairds. This paper focuses on two contemporary documents concerning the lairds as plaintiffs and Morton as defendant respectively: James Mackenzie’s The General Grievances and Oppression of the Isles of Orkney and Shetland (1750), and Thomas Hepburn’s A Letter to a Gentleman from his Friend in Orkney, Containing the True Causes of the Poverty of that Country (1760). This paper seeks to illuminate the contrasts revealed during the age of Enlightenment in Scotland by focusing on the conflict between those who tried to promote ‘improvement’ in order to adapt the economy to increased competition brought about by trade expansion after the Acts of Union of 1707, and those in the traditional, local communities who sought out alternative ways to accommodate themselves to this change.     Residential and Business Services Friday, 20 December 2019 Student Accommodation Survey 2019-20 John Burnet Hall Introduction: This report is based on the responses collected from the November 2019 Student Accommodation Survey. In analysing the results, the ‘not applicable’ responses were removed to provide an accurate breakdown of responses. To ensure easy analysis of information in the bar and pie charts, the very satisfied and satisfied responses have been combined to represent overall satisfaction. Likewise, the dissatisfied and strongly dissatisfied responses have been combined to represent overall dissatisfaction. The individual breakdown of responses has been preserved in the separate survey reports. Average results have been calculated for each category and are presented alongside the individual responses to the category questions for ease of reference. The survey results showed a notable difference in International student satisfaction compared to Home/EU student satisfaction, therefore the overall satisfaction and catering satisfaction categories are broken down further and also presented by Home/EU and International satisfaction.
