ABSTRACT The Third African Conference on Nutrition and Child Feeding, held in Tunis, May 25-29, 1970, was sponsored by the Republic of Tunisia and USAID, with participation of the FAQ, UNICEF, the UN Development Program, and the WHO. The conference activities recorded in these proceedings include country reports on nutrition in Algeria, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Kinshasa, Gabon, Morocco, Rwanda, Tunisia, and the United States. Also included are thematic presentations and committee reports on nutrition and health, nutrition and agriculture, nutrition and child feeding, nutrition and education, nutrition and industry, and coordination of nutrition programs. The general discussions which followed the thematic presentations reflect the sharp focus of attention on such key questions as health and mental development, the relative importance of food crops versus cash crops, the value of nutrition surveys in providing a basis for agricultural and trade policies, the enormous need for nutrition education, and the critical need for coordination of nutritional and agricultural policies. Recommendations generated by conference participants include these: That governments organize new services for prevention of childhood malnutrition, and reinforce existing services; that they take steps to integrate the science of nutrition into agricultural programs; that they recognize the importance of food crops for national health and development; that they integrate infant nutrition into preventive medicine, and conduct surveys of the nutritional needs of children, by age group and region; that they encourage breastfeeding as the only nursing method that provides total hygenic security; that they encourage the spacing of births; that they institute new programs of nutrition education; that they inventory local foods with a view toward their use in preparation of weaning foods; that they establish agencies to control prices and quality of foods; that they study -the nutritive value and acceptability of industrial bv-p) oducts 10. that could provide CONTROL NUMBER 11. The conveners were gratified to see the importance which the participating governments accorded to the conference reflected in the high level of the delegates who were sent. It was the first time that cabinet ministers attended a seminar of this kind and participated actively in the discussions, seeking information in fields different from but related to their own and bareing with complete candor and sincerity the problems they were confronted with in discharging their duties. As the following pages will show, each delegation had pre­ pared an in-depth report on the nutritional status of its country. The general discussions which followed the thematic presentations reflected the sharp focus of atten­ tion on key questions, sach as health and mental develop­ ment, the relative importance of food crops versus cash crops, the value of nutrition surveys in providing the basis for agricultural and trade policies, the enormous need for nutrition education, and the essentiality of coordination. Page 1/24 Abstract Background Health risks linked with dioxin in sh remain a complex policy issue. Fatty Baltic sh contain persistent pollutants, but they are otherwise healthy food. We studied the health benets and risks associated with Baltic herring and salmon in four countries to identify critical uncertainties and to facilitate an evidence-based discussion. Methods We performed an online survey investigating consumers' sh consumption and its motivation in Denmark, Estonia, Finland, and Sweden. Dioxin and methylmercury concentrations were estimated based on Finnish studies. Exposure-response functions for several health endpoints were evaluated and quantied based on the scientic literature. We also quantied the infertility risk of men based on a recent European risk assessment estimating childhood dioxin exposure and its effect on sperm concentration later in life.

Origins of the Movement of Socialist Democrats No references have been found on a Tunisian politically party, legal or otherwise, called the Democratic Socialist Party. Some sources do refer to the Democratic Socialist Movement, including the Immigration and Refugee Board of Canada.1 According to the Broadleft website, the Movement of Socialist Democrats (MDS) split from the ruling Democratic Constitutional Rally (RCD) Party in 1978.2 The Movement of Socialist Democrats (MDS) was founded by Ahmad Mestiri, formerly a minister in the Democratic Constitutional Rally (RCD) government. According to Answers.com, the MDS is not radically different from the RCD, simply with a greater emphasis on Arab nationalism and socialism.3 In her 1995 publication Human Rights and Reform – Changing the Face of North African Politics, Susan E. Waltz states that Ahmed Mestiri was the interior minister in the Tunisian government before being expelled “in the early 1970s”. Mestiri and other ‘liberal dissidents’ began secretly meeting “in the mid 1970s”; however, the MDS was not formally organised until 1983. According to Waltz, “[t]hese men sought not to overthrow a system, but to reform and redirect it… By working within a framework intellectually acceptable to the government while exposing internal contradictions, Tunisian liberals hoped to force the political system open and reserve a place for themselves within it”: After the former interior minister Ahmed Mestiri and a handful of dissidents were expelled from the ruling PSD in the early 1970s, a small group of self-identified “liberals” began to meet privately to discuss means of breathing new life into their proposed program of democratic reform.

    Summary of First Scientific report (1.4.2015-31.3.2016) Overall goals and expected final results High dioxin concentration in Baltic salmon and herring causes a risk for human health, and influences the use of catches and possibly also the management of these fisheries. The overall goal of BONUS GOHERR (www.goherr.com) is to increase the understanding of the dioxin problem, its causes, and its social and health implications, and to seek holistic solutions to benefit both society and the Baltic Sea. The project will provide recommendations for the ecosystem-based management of salmon and herring fisheries and the related dioxin problem, and for governance structures in support of that. Work performed since the beginning of the project As a starting point for outlining governance structures for the ecosystem-based management of Baltic herring and salmon fisheries, literature reviews focusing on multi-level, nested, and integrated governance overall and in the Baltic Sea, as well as on current legal and policy frameworks related to Baltic salmon and herring, have been undertaken. The existing management objectives relating to Baltic salmon, herring and dioxins have been identified, and structured into fundamental objectives (the ends that the decision makers value in the context of Baltic Sea fisheries management) and means objectives (the methods to achieve the An icebreaker game to start the stakeholder workshop ends). In February 2016, a stakeholder workshop focusing on the dioxin problem of Baltic herring was organised in Copenhagen. In the workshop, desired future states for the use of the herring resource were defined and pathways, including milestones, governance actions and actors, to reach them developed.
